1. Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav Addresses BRICS High Level Meeting on Climate Change

  • Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri. Bhupender Yadav participated in the BRICS High Level Meeting held virtually on May 13, 2022.
  • The BRICS High Level Meeting was chaired by H.E. Mr. Huang Runqiu, Minister of Ecology and Environment of the People’s Republic of China and was attended by Environment Ministers of BRICS nations.
  • BRICS headquarters located in Shanghai, China.

2. Sanskrit and Hindi Scholar Dr. Rama Kant Shukla Passed Away

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep grief over the demise of Sanskrit and Hindi Scholar Dr. Rama Kant Shukla.
  • He was a distinguished Sanskrit and Hindi scholar and Padma Shri holder.
  • He died in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh.

3. Andrew Symonds, former Australia all-rounder, dies aged 46

  • Andrew Symonds, the former Australia all-rounder, has passed away following a car crash near the outskirts of the city of Townsville.
  • He was 46.
  • Symonds, one of the greatest all-rounders to represent the country, played 26 Tests, 198 ODIs and 14 T20Is for Australia and was a two-time World Cup winner.

4. Ministry of Steel hosts the Meeting of Hindi Salahkar Samiti at Gangtok

  • During Meeting, Shri Singh praised Sikkim for emerging as the first State in India which has achieved the highest per capita income and cent – percent organic farming.
  • Pointing out that languages bind people, never break them away unless they are forcibly implemented, all of us should relentlessly work both for our mother tongue and the Official Language Hindi.
  • Hindi is the 3rd most spoken language of the world in 2019 with 615 million speakers.

5. 20% of NPAs set for bad bank resolved

  • About 20% of the non-performing assets (NPAs) of banks that were to be transferred to National Asset Reconstruction Co. Ltd (NARCL) in two tranches has been resolved.
  • Almost ₹40,000 crore of bad loans have been resolved since the announcement was first made, and by the time the NARCL starts operating more NPAs may get resolved.
  • Setting up of NARCL was announced in February 2021.

6. Union Bank launches Trade-Nxt platform for cross border trade transaction

  • UBI has launched a digital solution, ‘Trade nxt’ to ease all cross-border export-import transactions for corporates and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
  • The online platform provides seamless entry and processing of letters of credit (LC), bank guarantees, export and import bills, disbursement of export credit, outward & inward remittances etc.
  • Rajkiran Rai G is the Chief Managing Director of UBI.

7. BRICS countries mull pandemic early warning system

  • The 12th meeting of BRICS health ministers has agreed that BRICS countries will launch an early warning system for large-scale pandemics.
  • Hosted by China virtually, the meeting was joined by more than 70 attendees including health ministers from BRICS countries and the deputy director-general of the World Health Organization.
  • China is scheduled to host the BRICS summit in Xiamen in June this year.

8. Balkrishna Doshi becomes first Indian to win both Royal Gold Medal and Pritzker Prize

  • The celebrated architect, 94, has become one of the few to have been awarded two of the world’s most coveted architectural awards : the Royal Gold Medal and the Pritzker Architecture Prize, often hailed as the Nobel Prize of architecture, which he won in 2018.
  • He was given the Royal Gold Medal by the Royal Institute of British Architects.
  • Doshi is the only person from India to be bestowed with both accolades.

9. Nidhi Chibber appointed CBSE chairperson

  • Nidhi Chibber has been appointed as the chairperson of the Central Board of Secondary Education(CBSE).
  • She has been appointed as chairperson of the CBSE in the rank and pay of Additional Secretary to the government of India, an order issued by the Personnel Ministry.

10. Ministry of Culture to organise a week-long celebration for ‘International Museum Day’ across its museums

  • Under the aegis of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsava, on the occasion of the upcoming International Museum Day (IMD) on 18th May 2022, the Ministry of Culture, will organise a week-long celebration across its museums from 16th May – 20th May 2022.
  • The Ministry of Culture has already announced free entry for visitors to all the museums across the country.
  • ‘Reimagining Museums in India’ a Global Summit was held in February 2022.

11. UAE President, HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed, passed away

  • The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has expressed deep grief over the passing away of United Arab Emirates President, HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed and said that he was a great statesman and visionary leader under whom India-UAE relations prospered.
  • Abu Dhabi Crown Prince : Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed.

12. Pilot project for Skilling tribal youth launched from Bhopal, MP

  • Minister of State, Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar launched Pilot Project for Skilling Tribal Youth – Rural Tribal Technical Training at the Centre for Research and Industrial Staff Performance CRISP, Bhopal.
  • The pilot project envisages training for 250 beneficiaries of 17 clusters of 17 districts of 6 states.
  • Name of the Rural Tribal Technical Training Program : Grameen Udhyami Project.

13. Scientists discover almost 35 million years old rare snake fossil from Ladakh

  • Scientists have reported spotting of the fossil of a Madtsoiidae snake from the molasse deposits of Ladakh Himalaya for the first time indicating their prevalence in the subcontinent for much longer time than previously thought.
  • Madtsoiidae is an extinct group of medium-sized to gigantic snakes, firstly appeared during the late Cretaceous.

14. 7th Japan-India ICT Joint Working Group meeting held under India-Japan ICT Comprehensive Cooperation Framework

  • The 7th Japan-India ICT Joint Working Group meeting was held on 13th May2022 on a virtual platform.
  • V.L Kantha Rao, Additional Secretary, Department of Telecom and H.E. Mr. Sasaki YUJI, Vice Minister for Policy Coordination (International Affairs), Japan co-chaired the meeting.
  • Senior representatives from both governments and other non-governmental stakeholders participated.

15. NSIC – MSME Ministry organizes ‘Enterprise India- Mega Job Fair’

  • The major objective of Mega Job Fair was to provide employment opportunities to the students who are passing out from different courses being conducted in the Centre.
  • More than 30 companies including renowned companies like LG Electronics, Munjal Showa (Hero Honda Group), JBM Group, Maxop, SPM Auto Comp, were present with Various job offers.
