1. Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Anupriya Patel attended the 10th East Asia Summit Economic Ministers’ Meeting

  • The Minister of State for Commerce and Industry attended the 10th EAS EMM (East Asia Summit Economic Ministers’ Meeting) in Siem Reap City, Cambodia.
  • The meeting saw representation from all 10 ASEAN countries as well as 8 partner countries viz. Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Russian Federation and the USA.

2. Science Magazine ‘Vigyan Pragati’ receives ‘Rajbhasha Kirti Award’

  • CSIR’s popular science magazine “Vigyan Pragati” has received the National Rajbhasha Kirti Award (First position).
  • The magazine is popular among children, teachers, researchers, and the public across India as well as the world.
  • Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) started publishing this magazine in 1952.

3. PFC successfully resolves CIRP of India’s largest stressed transmission asset

  • Power Finance Corporation Ltd. has successfully resolved the country’s largest stressed asset in the power transmission sector of Southeast U. P. Power Transmission Company Limited.
  • This is a landmark resolution through the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP) under the IBC (2016), which has resulted in lenders recovering in excess of 100% of the principal amount.

4. World Youth Chess Championships: GM Pranav Anand wins U16 title, Ilamparthi secures U14 title

  • India’s latest Grandmaster Pranav Anand won the U-16 open title and A. R. Ilamparthi claimed the U-14 open gold in the World youth chess championship at Mamaia, Romania.
  • A day after meeting the stipulation to become India’s 76th Grandmaster, Pranav Anand justified his top billing by beating Augustin Droin to finish with 9 points from 11 rounds.

5. Hyderabad to commemorate 75 years of liberation with year-long celebrations

  • September 17 was commemorated by the Union government as ‘Hyderabad Liberation Day’ and by the government of Telangana as ‘National Integration Day’.
  • On September 17, 1948, the Nizam of Hyderabad Mir Osman Ali Khan, the seventh in the line of the Asaf Jahi dynasty, had surrendered in the wake of Operation Polo, the military invasion of Hyderabad by Indian forces.
  • The celebrations started on September 17, 2022, and will end on September 17, 2023.

6. VECV’s Vinod Aggarwal appointed as SIAM president

  • The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) appointed Vinod Aggarwal, Managing Director of Volvo Eicher Commercial Vehicles as its new president for 2022-23.
  • Aggarwal, who was the Vice President of SIAM succeeds Kenichi Ayukawa, Executive Vice Chairman & Whole Time Director, Maruti Suzuki India.
  • About SIAM:
    • Full form: Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers.
    • SIAM is a not-for-profit apex national body representing all major vehicle and vehicular engine manufacturers in India.

7. IndusInd Bank re-appoints Sumant Kathpalia as MD & CEO for 3 years

  • IndusInd Bank has approved the re-appointment of Sumant Kathpalia as managing director and chief executive officer for three years with effect from March 24, 2023.
  • Kathpalia was appointed as MD & CEO of IndusInd Bank in March 2020.
  • Prior to joining IndusInd Bank, Kathpalia had stints with Citibank, Bank of America and ABN Amro.

8. Iran signs formal MoU to join SCO; to become permanent member at 2023 India Summit

  • Iran has signed a memorandum of commitments to join the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), giving boost to India’s focus on an inclusive connectivity agenda in the Eurasian region that would function parallel to China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
  • The value of Iran’s exports to India increased by 35% in the first seven months of 2022, compared with a year earlier.

9. India’s CAD likely to remain within 3% of GDP: RBI bulletin

  • India’s Current Account Deficit (CAD), a key indicator of the balance of payment of a country, is likely to remain within 3 percent of the GDP in 2022-23 as against 1.2% during the last fiscal, according to an article published in the Reserve Bank’s article titled ‘State of the Economy’.
  • India’s trade deficit during the first 5 months of 2022-23 widened to USD 124.5 billion.
  • What is CAD:
    • It is a measurement of a country’s trade where the value of the goods and services it imports exceeds the value of the products it exports.
    • The current account includes net income, such as dividends and interest, and transfers, such as foreign aid.

10. KRITAGYA 3.0, a national level hackathon on crop improvement.

  • Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) with its National Agricultural Higher Education Project and Crop Science Division is organizing Hackathon 3.0 ‘’KRITAGYA” on promoting ‘speed breeding for crop improvement’.
  • This will provide an opportunity for Students and others to showcase innovative approaches and technology solutions to promote innovation for crop improvement.

11. MCA revises threshold for paid up capital of “small companies”

  • The definition of “small companies” under the Companies Act, 2013 is revised by increasing thresholds for paid up Capital from “not exceeding Rs. 2 crore” to “not exceeding Rs. 4 crore” and turnover from “not exceeding Rs. 20 crore” to “not exceeding Rs. 40 crore”.

12. Windfall tax on crude slashed by Rs 2,500 per tonne

  • The government has slashed windfall gains tax, lowering the duties and cess on domestic crude and export of aviation turbine fuel and diesel following a decline in international crude oil price.
  • It has cut the tax on domestically produced crude oil to Rs 10,500 a tonne from Rs 13,300 earlier.
