1. Serena Williams announces her retirement from professional tennis
- American legend Serena Williams, winner of 23 Grand Slam titles, has announced her retirement from professional tennis.
- She was ranked singles world number one by the Women’s Tennis Association for 319 weeks, including a joint-record 186 consecutive weeks.
- She also finished as the year-end number one five times.
- She has most of all time grand slams behind Margaret Court -24
2. India’s men & women team win bronze medal at 44th Chess Olympiad
- The 44th Chess Olympiad inaugurated by Prime minister Narendra Modi in Chennai ended on August 9th.
- India competed in the tournament with three teams in the Men’s Section and three teams in the Women’s section.
- India ‘B’ team comprising D Gukesh, R Praggnanandhaa, Raunak Sadhwani and Adhiban won the bronze medal beating Germany.
- The first women’s Olympiad was held in 1957.
- Since 1976, women and open sections have been held together.
3. Microsoft onboards govt-backed Open Network of digital commerce
- ONDC (OPEN Network of digital commerce), which is developing a first-of-its-kind open network for digital commerce, said US tech giant Microsoft has onboarded its platform.
- Microsoft intends to introduce social e-commerce — group buying experience — in the Indian market.
- Microsoft, among the three largest tech companies, is the first in its league to announce onboarding.
4. One Nation One Ration Card completes 3 years
- The scheme has now been implemented all over the country with Assam being the latest state to join the initiative in June 2022.
- The ONORC, which was launched as a pilot project on August 9, 2019 in four states, has completed three years.

- The Lok Sabha passed the New Delhi International Arbitration Centre (Amendment) Bill, in 2022 today.

- It also renamed the New Delhi International Arbitration Centre the India International Arbitration Centre.
6. PNB Housing Finance Limited enhances ‘Unnati’ portfolio to offer affordable loans Rs 9-12 lakh
- PNB Housing Finance is enhancing its ‘Unnati’ loan portfolio to go deeper into the affordable housing segment eyeing customers who need loans of Rs 9-12 lakh, MD & CEO Hardayal Prasad said.
- PNB Housing has created a small vertical under Unnati which will be different from existing Rs 18-19 lakh as affordable housing loans.
7. Samudrayaan mission: First mission of India to send humans 6,000 metres deep in ocean.
- The Indian government will soon start its mega ocean mission called ‘Samudrayaan’ to unlock the mysteries in the heart of deep water.
- With this mission, India will be joining the elite club of nations such as the US, Russia, Japan, France, and China to have niche technology and vehicles to carry out subsea activities.
8. DFI and Indian Army collaborate to accelerate drone technology for frontline soldiers
- The Indian Army launched the Him Drone-a-thon programme today in collaboration with the Drone Federation of India (DFI).
- The initiative is in line with self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
- It is aimed at catalysing and providing focused opportunities to the Indian drone ecosystem to develop path-breaking drone capabilities for meeting the requirements of frontline troops.

- Colombia’s first leftist president was sworn into office in August 2022.

11. Lok Sabha passes Energy Conservation (Amendment) Bill 2022
- The Lok Sabha has passed the Bill to amend the Energy Conservation Act, 2001, to reduce fossil fuel-based energy consumption and resultant carbon emissions to the atmosphere.
- It empowers the central government to specify energy consumption standards and require designated consumers to meet a minimum share of energy consumption from non-fossil sources.
12. V Pranav of Chennai becomes India’s 75th chess Grandmaster
- Chess prodigy V Pranav became India’s 75th Grandmaster by winning a tournament in Romania.
- The Chennai-based Pranav won the Limpedea Open in Baia Mare, Romania to secure his third and final GM norm and attain the Grandmaster title.
13. PM Modi chairs NITI Aayog’s 7th Governing Council meet
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the seventh Governing Council meeting of Niti Aayog at Rashtrapati Bhawan Cultural Centre in New Delhi.
- The agenda of the Niti Aayog meeting includes achieving self-sufficiency in oilseeds and pulses and agri-communities, National Education Policy and crop diversification, including other things.
14. Dalai Lama honoured with Ladakh’s highest civilian award
- Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama was honoured with the ‘dPal rNgam Duston’ award the highest civilian honour of Ladakh—for his immense contribution to humanity especially to UT.
- The sixth award was conferred by Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council Leh which celebrated the ‘dPal rNgam Duston’ with great fervour on the occasion of its foundation day of Sindhu Ghat.
