1. Google Parent Alphabet Names Goldman Sachs Veteran, Marty Chavez To Board
- Wall Street veteran Marty Chavez is joining the board of Google parent Alphabet Inc., adding significant finance muscle to the technology giant.
- Chavez, a vice chairman and partner with Sixth Street Partners, has worked as an investor and software executive but is best known for his 20-year tenure at Goldman Sachs Group Inc.
2. Adani Ports, Gadot Win bid to acquire Israel’s Haifa port
- A joint venture between Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ), India’s largest private multi-port operator and Israel’s Gadot Chemicals Tankers and Terminals Ltd won the bid for Haifa, by reportedly quoting 4.1 billion shekels ($1.18 billion).
- Haifa is Israel’s second largest port and serves as a major trade hub on the country’s Mediterranean coast.
3. Union Minister Bhupender Yadav attends BRICS Labour and Employment Ministers’ Meeting
- Union Labour and Employment Minister Bhupender Yadav attended the BRICS Labour and Employment Ministers’ Meeting held under the Chinese Presidency.
- The Ministers of the member countries Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa participated in the meeting.
- Yadav highlighted the steps taken by India to provide relief to workers during the pandemic.
- The idea of the BRICS was formulated by Chief Economist at Goldman Sachs Jim O’Neill 2001.
4. First monkeypox case reported in Kerala, Centre sends disciplinary team to help in preventive measures
- The Centre has rushed a high-level multi-disciplinary team to Kerala to collaborate with the State Health Authorities in instituting public health measures in view of the confirmed case of Monkeypox in Kollam district of the state.
- Earlier, the health secretary issued an advisory to all state governments to intensify vigil against monkey pox disease at international entry points.
5. Infosys to acquire Denmark-based BASE life science for Rs 875 crore
- Infosys will acquire Denmark-based BASE life science for about 110 million euros (Rs 875 crore) in an all-cash deal.
- The acquisition will deepen Infosys’ expertise in the life sciences domain as well as strengthen its footprint across Europe.
- BASE brings to Infosys domain experts with commercial, medical, digital marketing, clinical, regulatory, and quality knowhow.
6. To promote jute products, Govt launches ‘Jute Mark India’ logo
- The government introduced certification of authenticity for jute products with the unveiling of the “Jute Mark India” logo.
- The Jute Mark India scheme will provide the collective identity and assurance on origin and quality for traditional jute and jute products.
- The JMI would therefore be a hallmark of powerful creative work that defines the jute product with quality.
- The National Jute Board is governed by the National Jute Board Act-2008.

- Government-owned SIDBI is developing an online platform which will bring together startups and investors with the aim to facilitate the funding requirements of budding entrepreneurs.

8. Kotak Mahindra Bank bags DLL India’s agri & healthcare equipment financing portfolio
- Kotak Mahindra Bank said that it has acquired the agri and healthcare equipment financing portfolio of global asset finance company DLL India.
- Kotak will gain access to over 25,000 customers with a total standard loan outstanding of around ₹ 582 cr.
- Moreover, Kotak has also acquired the non-performing assets portfolio with a total loan outstanding of around ₹ 69 crore.
9. Gita Gopinath becomes first woman and 2nd Indian to feature on IMF’s ‘wall of former chief economists’
- India-born Gita Gopinath became the first woman and second Indian to feature on the ‘wall of former chief economists’ of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
- The first Indian to achieve the honour was Raghuram Rajan who was Chief Economist and Director of Research of IMF between 2003 and 2006.
10. LIC to invest Rs 80.67 crore in rights issue of its Nepal joint venture
- State-owned LIC will invest Rs 80.67 crore in the proposed rights issue of its joint venture LIC (Nepal) Ltd.
- LIC said the central government has nominated Suchindra Mishra, Additional Secretary, Department of Financial Services, as Government Director on its board with immediate effect.
- He replaces Pankaj Jain.
- LIC owns 55 per cent stake in LIC (Nepal).
11. RBI approves Rakesh Makhija’s reappointment as Axis Bank’s Non-Executive Chairman
- Axis Bank said the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the reappointment of Rakesh Makhija as the Non-Executive Chairman till October 2023.
- Citibank India and Axis Bank’s credit card portfolio is stable with low single-digit bad loans.
12. India’s retail inflation eases to 7.01 percent in June
- Retail inflation, based on the consumer price index (CPI), eased to 7.01 percent in June this year compared to 7.04 percent in preceding month.
- The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation said, inflation eased marginally mainly due to easing prices in the “Food & Beverages” section.
13. CAQM formulates Comprehensive Policy to abate menace of air pollution in Delhi-NCR
- The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has formulated a Comprehensive Policy to abate the menace of air pollution and improve the air quality in Delhi-NCR through a differentiated geographical approach.
- It focuses on abating air pollution through greening and plantation on a large scale, among other mitigation measures.
14. Twitter sues Tesla CEO Elon Musk for violating $44 billion merger deal
- Twitter Inc sued Elon Musk for violating the $44 billion deal to buy the social media platform and asked a Delaware court to order the world’s richest person to complete the merger at the agreed $54.20 per Twitter share, according to a court filing.
15. Cabinet approves Taranga Hill-Ambaji-Abu Rd rail line for improved mobility
- The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved the Taranga Hill-Ambaji-Abu Road new rail line to provide connectivity and improve mobility.
- The estimated cost of this project is Rs 2798.16 crores and will be completed by 2026-27.
- The total length of the new rail line will be 116.65 km and will be constructed by the Ministry of Railways.
16. RBI approves appointment of Meena Hemchandra as part-time chairman of Karur Vysya Bank
- Private sector lender Karur Vysya Bank said the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the appointment of former RBI executive Meena Hemchandra as part-time chairman of the bank for three years.
- In May, the bank had recommended Hemchandra’s candidature for the position of non-executive independent (part-time) chairperson of the bank to the RBI for approval.

18. Indian scientists develop novel mechanism to inactivate SARS-CoV-2
- Indian scientists have developed a new class of synthetic peptides that can not only block the entry of the SARS-CoV-2 virus into cells but also clump the virus particles together, reducing their ability to infect the living cell.
- This novel mechanism provides an alternative to make viruses like SARS-CoV-2 inactive, promising a new class of peptides as antivirals.
19. Mehuli Ghosh and Shahu Tushar Mane clinch second gold for India at ISSF Shooting World Cup
- In Shooting, the duo of Mehuli Ghosh and Shahu Tushar Mane bagged India’s second gold medal in the 10m Air Rifle Mixed Team final at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup stage at Changwon in South Korea.
- The Indian pair of Palak and Shiva Narwal bagged bronze in the 10m Air Pistol mixed event.
20. Industrial Production Index jumps to 19.6 percent in May
- The Index of Industrial Production (IIP) jumped 19.6 percent in May 2022 as against 7.1 percent in preceding month.
- According to the data released by the National Statistical Office, the manufacturing sector’s output grew 20.6 percent in May this year while the mining output climbed 10.9 percent and the Electricity sector surged 23.5 percent.
21. Avdhash Kaushal, noted social worker and Padma Shri awardee, passes away
- Noted social worker and Padma Shri awardee Avdhash Kaushal died at a private hospital following a prolonged illness.
- He was 87.
- Kaushal who founded an NGO named Rural Litigation and Entitlement Kendra fought for human rights and the conservation of the environment.
- Kaushal is credited with bringing mining activities to an end in Mussoorie in the 1980s.
