1. PM launches historic torch relay for 44th Chess Olympiad at Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi

  • PM Narendra Modi launched the historic torch relay for the 44th Chess Olympiad at Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi.
  • The Prime Minister will also address a gathering on the occasion.
  • India is the first country to have the Chess Olympiad Torch Relay.
  • FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich handed over the torch to PM Modi, who in turn handed it over to Vishwanathan Anand.
  • The Olympiad is being hosted in India for the first time and in Asia after 30 years.

2. Goods and Services Tax Council’s 47th Meeting to be held in Chandigarh instead of Srinagar

  • The 47th meeting of the GST Council will be held on 28-29 June, 2022 at Chandigarh instead of Srinagar due to likely security issues.
  • The Council had last year set up a seven-member panel of state ministers, headed by Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, to suggest ways to augment revenue by rationalising tax rates.
  • The GoM had last met in November 2021.

3. Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra wins gold at Kuortane Games in Finland

  • Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra clinched his first top podium finish of the season by winning the javelin throw event at the Kuortane Games in Finland, beating reigning world champion Anderson Peters
  • The 24-year-old Chopra’s opening throw of 86.69m turned out to be the winning distance.

4. Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan inaugurates National Yoga Olympiad 2022

  • Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan inaugurated National Yoga Olympiad – 2022 and quiz competition in New Delhi.
  • The National Yoga Olympiad is being organised jointly by the Ministry of Education and the National Council of Educational Research and Training from June 18-20.

5. Net direct tax collections jump 45% for FY23

  • India’s direct tax collections for the Financial Year 2022-23, as on 16 June 2022, showed net collections at Rs 3,39,225 crore compared with Rs 2,33,651 crore in the corresponding period of the preceding year, representing an increase of 45%.
  • Net collection in the current financial year has registered a growth of 171% over the corresponding period of financial year 2020-21.

6. Indian Bank Unveils KCC Digital Renewal Scheme

  • Public sector Indian Bank has unveiled KCC Digital Renewal Scheme enabling customers to renew their Kisan Credit Card accounts through the digital platform.
  • Under the project World of Advanced Virtual Experience (WAVE) initiative, Indian Bank MD and CEO, S L Jain launched the scheme which eliminates the need to visit a branch or submit added physical documents.

7. Indian Army, IAF practice aerial insertion and landing on water for rapid deployment into hostile territory

  • Special Forces of the Indian Army and Indian Air Force carried out a 2-day joint exercise at the Gobind Sagar Reservoir in Himachal Pradesh to validate the aerial insertion and deployment of operatives through water parachute jumps.
  • In November 2021, Army had carried out its first-ever airborne insertion exercise at high-altitude locations at the border with China in Ladakh.

8. For women founders Google announces a program named startup accelerator program

  • Google announced a startup accelerator program for women founders which will help them address challenges such as fundraising and hiring.
  • The inaugural batch of the ‘Google for Startups Accelerator – India Women Founders’ will accept up to 20 women – founded co-founded startups in the country, and support them through a three-month program.

9. Queen Elizabeth II is the second-longest reigning monarch in history

  • The head of the British royal family, Queen Elizabeth II, became the second-longest reigning monarch in world history.
  • Taking the throne on Feb 6, 1952, the queen has ruled the realm for 70 years and 127 days.
  • She just surpassed the lengthy reign of former Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who ruled from 1946 until his death in 2016.
  • French King Louis XIV remains in the top having served as monarch for more than 72 yrs.

10. India’s Science & Tech department launches geospatial self-certification portal

  • In a major step towards liberalization of the geospatial industry in India,the Indian Department of Science and Technology (DST) has launched the Self Certification Portal.
  • Portal will essentially cut down time spent on obtaining clearances and approvals drastically for Geospatial companies, researchers, academia & innovators for carrying out Geospatial related activities.
  • The Portal has been developed in collaboration with the National Information Centre (NIC).

11. Fitch revises outlook on 9 Indian Banks

  • Fitch Ratings has revised the Outlook to Stable from Negative on the Long-Term Issuer Default Ratings (IDR) of 9 Indian banks, while affirming their IDRs.
  • Fitch has also affirmed the Government Support Ratings (GSRs) for seven of them and the Shareholder Support Rating (SSR) on Bank of Baroda (New Zealand) Limited.

12. Shriram Group receives RBI nod for merger of financial services business

  • The Shriram Group has secured RBI approval for the merger of Shriram City Union Finance and Shriram Capital Ltd with Shriram Transport Finance Company in a consolidation set to create the largest retail finance NBFC in the country.
  • The merged entity will be named Shriram Finance Ltd.
  • The scheme has to secure nods from the IRDA and other regulators as well.

13. India’s trade deficit widens to record $24.29 billion in May

  • India’s trade deficit widened to a record $24.29 billion in May 2022 from $6.53 billion in the same month last year due to a sharp jump in the country’s imports, as per data released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
  • The merchandise trade deficit in May 2022 is the highest ever monthly gap.
  • On a year-on-year basis, it has surged by 271.96 per cent.
  • The trade deficit has widened sharply due to a jump in the country’s imports.

14. Adani Transmission gets ‘green’ tag for $700-mn revolving loan facility

  • Adani Transmission Limited (ATL) has bagged the coveted green loan tag by Sustainalytics for its revolving facility worth $700 million.
  • This provides assurance on the green loan framework for ATL’s revolving facility.
  • A revolving loan facility is a flexible borrowing mechanism that enables the borrower to withdraw, repay, and withdraw again.

15. UPI goes to France: NPCI International signs MoU with Lyra Network

  • After the UAE, Singapore, Nepal, and Bhutan, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) said it has launched Unified Payment Services (UPI) in Europe, starting with France.
  • NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL)—the international arm of NPCI—has signed an MoU with France-based payments solution provider Lyra Network to accept UPI & Rupay cards in the country.
  • Ashwini Vaishnaw announced during his visit to France for the Viva Technology 2022 event.

16. Microfinance loans grew 10% in FY22, shows Microfinance Institutions Network (MFIN) data

  • The gross loan portfolio of India’s microfinance industry grew 10% in 2021-22 to ₹2.85 trillion, according to data released by MFIN.
  • In terms of regional distribution of gross loans, the eastern, the northeastern and the southern states account for 64.3% of the total portfolio.
  • Tamil Nadu has become the largest state in terms of portfolio outstanding followed by Bihar & WB.

17. Burgundy Private Hurun’s list: Razorpay, Ola, Swiggy biggest gainers in unlisted firms, NSE emerge as most valued

  • Razorpay, Ola Cabs, Swiggy, and Parle Products were among the top ten unlisted companies that witnessed a massive rise in their valuation last year, as per the Burgundy Private Hurun India 500 – Special Report.
  • Stock exchange, National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) outpaced Serum Institute of India in becoming the most valued unlisted firm.
  • Financial services, Healthcare, Software & Services are among the biggest contributors.

18. Aarti Prabhakar to be appointed as Science Advisor to US President

  • An Indian-origin physicist is likely to be appointed US President Joe Biden’s next science adviser.
  • It is also expected that she would be nominated by the President as director of the White House Office of Science and Technology (OSTP), though that appointment needs the nod of the Senate and could take months.
