 News Details 

1. Suman Bery appointed NITI Aayog vice-chairman, to succeed Rajiv Kumar

  • The Ministry of Personnel statement in a statement said that the appointments committee of the cabinet had accepted Kumar’s resignation and appointed Suman Bery as the full-time member of the NITI Aayog and later as the vice chairperson from May 1.
  • Bery has served as a member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council (PMEAC) and the National Statistical Commission.

2. RBI issues new rules, penalties for credit & debit cards effective from July 1, 2022

  • Banks with a net worth of Rs 100 crore and above are permitted to undertake credit card business either independently or in tie-up arrangement with other card issuing banks/NBFCs.
  • Urban cooperative banks (UCBs) with minimum net worth of Rs 100 crore and a core banking solution in place can also issue credit cards after RBI approval.
  • RBI has also introduced penalties to be levied on banks & NBFCs in case of non-compliance.

3. APEDA signs MoU with NRDC for the implementation of the Agri Export Policy

  • Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with National Research Development Corporation (NRDC) on 22 April to synergize the activities in the interest of agriculture and allied sectors.
  • The MoU was signed by Secretary APEDA, and NRDC CMD Commodore (Rtd) Amit Rastogi.

4. FINA Suspends Olympic Champion Evgeny Rylov for Nine Months Over Vladimir Putin Rally

  • Swimming’s world governing body FINA suspended Russian Olympic gold medallist Evgeny Rylov for nine months after he attended a rally in Moscow in support of Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine.
  • Rylov, who won gold in 100 and 200 metres backstroke events at last year’s Tokyo Olympics.

5. IMF projects India’s general fiscal deficit at 9.9% of GDP for FY23

  • India’s general government fiscal deficit (states and Centre combined) has been projected at 9.9 percent of GDP for FY23 as rising energy and food prices will put renewed pressure on the fiscal gap, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said in its report.

6. RBI sets a 3-year deadline for non-individual borrowers to obtain Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) codes.

  • The Reserve Bank of India set a three-year timetable for non-individual borrowers with aggregate exposures of Rs 5 crore or more to obtain LEI.
  • Those with exposure above Rs 25 crore will have to get LEI code on or before April 30, 2023.
  • Exposure between Rs.10 to 25 crore by April 30,2024 and those with Rs.5 and 10 crore exposure on or before April 30,2025.
  • The LEI is a 20-character alpha-numeric code.

7. BHIM UPI goes live on NEOPAY terminals in UAE

  • NPCI International Payments Ltd (NIPL), the international arm of the National Payment Corporation of India said BHIM UPI is now live on NEOPAY terminals, across the UAE.
  • NIPL and NEOPAY, the payment subsidiary of Mashreq Bank, partnered last year, to create the acceptance infrastructure in the UAE.

8. UN Names David Attenborough ‘Champion Of The Earth’

  • The celebrated wildlife filmmaker and zoologist David Attenborough has been honored with the UN Environment Programme’s most illustrious title, the Champions of the Earth Lifetime Achievement Award, granted in recognition of his “outsized impact on the global environmental movement.”

9. OneWeb inks pact with ISRO commercial arm,New Space India, for satellite launches

  • Bharti group-backed OneWeb and New Space India Limited, the commercial arm of the Indian Space Research Organisation, have entered into an agreement that will help ensure OneWeb completes its satellite launch programme.
  • The first launch with New Space India is expected in 2022 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) SHAR, Sriharikota.

10. Ukrainian Prez Zelenskyy gets John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award for protecting democracy

  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is among five people named as recipients of the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award for acting to protect democracy.
  • The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation said that he was chosen because of the way he has “marshaled the spirit, patriotism and untiring sacrifice of the Ukrainian people in a life-or-death fight for their country.

11. Union Home and Cooperation Minister Shri Amit Shah attends 13th NIA Day celebrations of National Investigation Agency (NIA)

  • NIA has set ‘Gold Standard’ with more than 90 percent conviction rate and NIA has a very important role to play in fulfilling the Prime Minister’s goal of a terror-free India and Zero Tolerance Against Terrorism.

    13. Mumbai to host India’s first international cruise conference

    • Giving a boost to the shipping and tourism sector together, India would host the first-ever Incredible India International Cruise Conference 2022 in May, months ahead of the commissioning of the iconic cruise terminal in Mumbai.
    • The Mumbai Port Authority (MPA) would host the event in India’s financial capital on May 14-15.

    14. Dhanlaxmi Bank signs MoU with CBDT and CBIC for tax collection

    • Dhanlaxmi Bank has signed a memorandum of understanding with Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) and Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) for collection of taxes.
    • The bank has been authorised by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) based on the recommendation from the Controller General of Accounts for collection of various taxes.

    15. Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah among Wisden’s five ‘Cricketers of the Year’

    • India captain Rohit Sharma and pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah have been named among five players in Wisden’s ‘Cricketers of the Year’ in the 2022 edition of the Almanack.
    • Besides the duo, the list also features New Zealand batter Devon Conway, England pacer Ollie Robinson and Proteas women star Dane van Niekerk.
