1. Justice U U Lalit sworn in as 49th Chief Justice of India (CJI)

  • Justice Uday Umesh Lalit sworn-in as Chief Justice of India.
  • President Draupadi Murmu administered his oath as the 49th Chief Justice of India at Rashtrapati Bhawan.
  • He succeeded Justice NV Ramana.
  • Justice U U Lalit will be in office for 74 days, a tenure shorter than average.

2. Indian Navy’s AK-630 gun gets first made in India ammunition

  • Prime Minister’s Make in India in the defence sector received a major boost as the Indian Navy received the first-ever completely made in India 30mm ammunition.
  • The ammunition will be used in AK-630 guns, which are fitted on warships.
  • It was the first time that the services had placed an order on the Indian private industry to deliver complete gun ammunition.

3. Indian Judoka Linthoi Chanambam wins gold at World Cadet Judo Championship

  • Linthoi Chanambam scripted history by winning India’s first-ever medal in Judo World Championships with a gold in the Women’s 57kg category at the World Judo Cadet (U18) Championships.
  • The 15-year-old judoka outclassed Brazil’s Bianca Reis in the 57kg category final.
  • She became the first Indian judoka to win a medal at any age-group category of the World Championships.

4. Karim Benzema and Alexia Putellas win UEFA player of the year prizes for 2021-22

  • Karim Benzema and Alexia Putellas were rewarded for outstanding seasons by winning the UEFA men’s and women’s player of the year prizes at a ceremony in Istanbul.
  • Carlo Ancelotti was named best men’s coach for his success with Real, with Dutchwoman Sarina Wiegman crowned best women’s coach after leading England to Euro glory.

5. Neeraj Chopra makes history, becomes first Indian to win Lausanne Diamond League

  • India’s Neeraj Chopra claimed the first position in the Lausanne Diamond League with an incredible 89.08 m throw.
  • This is the first time Chopra has claimed the top spot in a Diamond League event and has now booked his place in the Finals in Zurich.

6. RBI imposes restrictions on Thodupuzha Urban Co-operative Bank, Kerala

  • The RBI barred customers of Thodupuzha Urban Co-operative Bank, Kerala, from withdrawing funds as part of several restrictions imposed on the lender due to its deteriorating financial condition.
  • The Reserve Bank, in a statement said the restrictions on the bank came into force from the close of business.
  • The restrictions will remain in force for six months from Aug 23.

7. India beat South Korea to win bronze in Asian U18 volleyball championships; qualifies for U19 Worlds

  • India defeated South Korea 3-2 to win bronze in the 14th Asian Men’s U18 Volleyball Championship in Tehran.
  • South Korea, who were the 1999 Champions and silver medallists at the previous edition, had already suffered defeat in the hands of India in straight sets in the pool stage.

8. Mali appoints government spokesman Abdoulaye Maiga as interim prime minister

9. India’s first naval shooting range opened in Vizag

  • A first of its kind in India, Composite Indoor Shooting Range (CISR) was inaugurated by Vice-Admiral Biswajit Dasgupta, Flag-Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command at INS Karna, on the premises of INS Kalinga near Bheemili.

  • India and Bangladesh discussed a wide range of issues related to the major common rivers such as the Ganga, Teesta and several smaller rivers during the 38th meeting of the Joint River Commission (JRC).

11. Economic Advisory Council (EAC) – PM to release the Competitiveness Roadmap for India@100

  • The Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister will release the Competitiveness Roadmap for India@100 on 30th August 2022.
  • The Competitiveness Roadmap is a collaborative endeavour between EAC-PM, The Institute for Competitiveness headed by Dr Amit Kapoor, and Professor Michael E. Porter and Dr Christian Ketels from Harvard Business School.

12. Former CEA Krishnamurthy Subramanian appointed India’s Executive Director at IMF

  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Subramanian to the post of Executive Director (India) at the IMF, with effect from November 1, 2022 for a period of three years or until further orders, by curtailing the tenure of Dr. Surjit S. Bhalla as ED (India), IMF up to 31.10.2022.

13. Hero Electric partners with Jio-bp for charging, battery swapping

  • In a development that is expected to boost electric vehicle (EV) adoption and mobility in India, Hero Electric is set to partner with Jio-bp to strengthen mobility solutions for electric two-wheelers.
  • Under this proposed partnership, the customers of Hero Electric are expected to get access to the widespread charging and swapping network of Jio-bp.

  • Former Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu today released a book titled New India – a compilation of selected articles of former Union Minister and Padma Vibhushan Arun Jaitley on his death anniversary in New Delhi.
  • He said, Mr Jaitley also dreamt of a progressive nation, where there is no poverty, no urban-rural divide and no gender and social discrimination.

15. Telcom department amends RoW rules to expedite 5G infrastructure rollout

  • The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Union Telecom and Communications Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw released amendment in the Indian Telegraph Right of Way (RoW) Rules, 2016 to facilitate faster and easier deployment of telecom infrastructure and launched a new 5G RoW application ‘form’ on GatiShakti Sanchar Portal to enable faster 5G rollout in India.

16. Germany inaugurates world’s first hydrogen-powered train fleet

  • German officials launched what they say is the world’s first fleet of hydrogen-powered passenger trains, replacing 15 diesel trains that previously operated on non-electrified tracks in the state of Lower Saxony.
  • The 14 trains use hydrogen fuel cells to generate electricity that powers the engines.

17. Tamil Nadu govt signs pact to invest ₹2,250 crore in leather sector, launches state footwear policy

  • India’s leading exporter in the leather industry, Tamil Nadu, has announced an investment of ₹2,250 crore in the footwear and leather sector and launched an annual policy for the industry in Tamil Nadu Footwear and Leather Sector Conclave 2022.
  • CM MK Stalin also launched the ‘Tamil Nadu Footwear and Leather Products Policy 2022’.
  • Tamil Nadu is the largest leather producing state in India.
