1. ‘Mahabharat’s Bheem’ actor Praveen Kumar Sobti dies

  • Actor-athlete Praveen Kumar Sobti, best known for playing Bheem in the TV series “Mahabharat” and for winning an Asian Games gold medal,
  • Praveen represented the country across various athletic events in hammer and discus throw and even won four medals at the Asian Games, including two gold medals in 1966 and 1970.

2. Santishree Pandit appointed first woman VC of JNU

  • Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit, a political science professor at Savitribai Phule Pune University, has been appointed as the first women Vice Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).
  • She was appointed by President Ram Nath Kovind, who is the University’s Visitor.
  • She will hold the job for the next five years.
  • She succeeds Jagadesh Kumar, who was appointed chairperson of the UGC.

3. Safer Internet Day: February 8

  • Safer Internet Day is observed every year on the second day of the second week of February.
  • The aim of the day is to provide a safer and better internet, where every user gets to use the internet responsibly and without getting their data leaked.
  • This year marks the 19th edition of Safer Internet Day with actions taking place right across the globe.
  • Theme of the year 2022 is “Together for a better internet”.

4. Visa-free entry for Indian business travellers to Maldives comes into force

  • Maldives has announced that the Visa-free entry for Indian business travellers to the island nation, comes into effect.
  • Maldives has commenced the process of granting Indian Nationals visa free entry for business purposes, for a period not exceeding the visa free period of 90 days.

5. NAREDCO Appoints Alok Gupta as the New Director General

  • National Real Estate Development Council (NAREDCO), appointed Alok Gupta as the New Director General (DG) of the association.
  • Gupta has taken over the charge of NAREDCO from 1st February 2022.
  • NAREDCO is an apex real estate body.
  • The National Real Estate Development Council was established as a self-regulatory body in 1998 under the aegis of Housing And Urban Affairs Government of India.
  • NAREDCO President : Rajan Bandelkar.

6. Ms Sukla Mistry takes over as first women Functional Director on IndianOil Board

  • Mistry as Director (Refineries) of IndianOil shall spearhead the business & operations of nine refineries & petrochemical plants of IndianOil.
  • Ms Mistry is also the first woman in IndianOil to hold the position of Executive Director & Refinery Head of an IndianOil refinery unit, first at Digboi Refinery (Assam) from 1 st January 2018-7 th February 2019.
  • Digboi Refinery (Assam), is the oldest operating refinery in Asia.

7. Launch Vehicle specialist Unnikrishnan Nair becomes chief of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre

  • Renowned scientist and Human Space Flight Centre (HSFC) director S Unnikrishnan Nair has been appointed as the director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC).
  • He was appointed as VSSC director after the post became vacant following the appointment of Dr S Somanath as ISRO chairman.
  • First Director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre was Dr Brahm Prakash.
  • VSSC located in Thiruvananthapuram, Founded : 21 November 1963.

8. CII presents DX 2021 award to Karnataka Bank

  • Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) awarded the prestigious Digital Transformation award, ‘DX 2021’ to Karnataka Bank.
  • The award is in recognition of best practices in digital transformation, including the ‘KBL Vikaas’.
  • Bank has recently launched digital transformation journey ‘KBL NxT’ as part of wave 2.0 of ‘KBL VIKAAS’.

9. Amazon India signs MoU with Karnataka govt to turn rural women into entrepreneurs

  • Amazon India has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Karnataka State Rural Livelihood Promotion Society (KSRLPS) to support the growth of women entrepreneurs.
  • Amazon India would launch Sanjeevini-KSRLPS in its marketplace and extend benefits of the ‘Saheli’ programme to train and empower thousands of women entrepreneurs to come online.

10. R. Rajamohan, Who led the first asteroid discoveries in independent India, is no more

  • Professor R. Rajamohan, who was an astronomer at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), Bengaluru, for decades.
  • He is best known for his Kalki Project.
  • The project aimed to discover asteroids using the 48-cm Schmidt telescope in Kavalur VBO and discovered a new asteroid, number 4130, from India.
  • This was the first asteroid discovered in India in 104 years.
  • VBO = The Vainu Bappu Observatory, an astronomical observatory owned and operated by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics.

11. ‘Kabir of Karnataka’ Ibrahim Sutar dies at 82

  • Padma Shri awardee and social worker Ibrahim Sutar passed away in Karnataka following a cardiac arrest.
  • He was 82.
  • Fondly referred to as the “Kabir of Kannada”, Sutar was known for his work towards spreading social and communal harmony.
  • Ibrahim is popular among the public, especially in north Karnataka, for his spiritual discourses.
  • He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2018.

12. NASA Plans to Retire International Space Station in 2031

  • The International Space Station will continue its operation until 2030 and then crash into an uninhabited area in the Pacific Ocean known as Point Nemo.
  • It will be replaced with three free-flying space stations to continue the work after ISS’s retirement.
  • NASA also selected Houston-based Axiom Space to provide the ISS’s first commercial module.

13. NATO chief to head Norway central bank

  • NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg will take over as Norway’s central bank Governor at the end of the year.
  • The appointment comes amid escalating tensions between the West and Russia.
  • Western nations fear Moscow has plans to invade Ukraine, which aspires to join the NATO alliance.
