1. Parliament passes Maritime Anti Piracy Bill 2022 with Rajya Sabha’s approval

  • Parliament has passed the Maritime Anti Piracy Bill 2022 with Rajya Sabha approving.
  • It was already passed by the Lok Sabha.
  • The Bill enables Indian authorities to take action against piracy on the high seas.
  • It applies to the sea beyond the Exclusive Economic Zone, which is beyond 200 nautical miles from India’s coastline.
  • About Maritime Anti Piracy Bill:
    • The Bill calls for the prevention of maritime piracy as well as the prosecution of those who commit piracy-related crimes.
    • It will apply to all areas of the sea adjacent to and beyond India’s Exclusive Economic Zone, i.e., more than 200 nautical miles from the coastline.

2. MoHUA kickstarts ground survey of Pey Jal Survekshan from 15th December 2022

  • The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has kickstarted the ground survey of Pey Jal Survekshan.
  • The Survey is to assess the service level compliance of the city with respect to quality, quantity, and coverage of water supply, sewerage and septage management, the extent of reuse and recycling of used water, and conservation of water bodies in 500 AMRUT cities.
  • What is AMRUT?
    • Full form = Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation.
    • The Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission was renamed Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT).
    • It was elaunched in June 2015 by Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi with the goal of establishing infrastructure that could ensure adequate robust sewage networks and water supply for urban transformation through the implementation of urban revival projects.

3. India GDP grew by 9.7% in H1FY23, says Finance Ministry

  • India’s gross domestic product growth in the first half of the current fiscal year averaged at 9.7 per cent, the finance ministry said in its mid-year expenditure and revenue statement.
  • The Ministry said it could not present the medium-term expenditure framework as said in the Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management Act, because projections were disrupted by the global situation.

4. Delhi leads India with the highest crypto adoption: CoinSwitch

  • CoinSwitch, a cryptocurrency trading platform in an annual investor report informed that New Delhi has the highest cryptocurrency adoption in India followed by Jaipur, measured in terms of value invested.
  • An insight from the report was that investing patterns followed by men and women were largely similar in India at 8%, women represent a small group of crypto investors.

5. IGX launches gas index, plans trading in pipeline capacity

  • The Indian Gas Exchange (IGX), promoted by the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX), has launched an index that will reflect gas prices and will soon come up with a product for trading in gas pipeline capacity.
  • The index, which IGX has named ‘GIXI’, will reflect the volume-weighted average price for all gas traded and would represent the gas prices at the Western and Southern hubs.

6. YouTube’s creator ecosystem contributed over Rs 10,000 crore to India’s GDP in 2021: Report

  • YouTube’s creative ecosystem contributed over Rs 10,000 crore & supported more than 7,50,000 full-time equivalent jobs in the Indian economy in 2021, citing a report by the consulting firm Oxford Economics unveiled.
  • In 2020, the YouTube creator ecosystem contributed Rs 6,800 crore to India’s GDP equivalent to 6,83,900 full-time jobs.

7. COP15 adopts biodiversity reversal plan to protect 30% of land, water by 2030

  • After a delay of two years due to Covid-19, a new global agreement to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030 gets a final nod during the last day of UN Biodiversity Conference (COP15) in Montreal, Canada.
  • The historic deal signed in Montreal also aims to provide critical financing to the developing world to protect biodiversity.
  • What is COP15?
    • The 15th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, or COP15, is the most recent meeting of world leaders to discuss biodiversity.
    • These discussions cover all forms of life from microscopic viruses to massive whales, as well as conservation, knowledge-sharing, and financial policies related to these organisms, their protection, and use.
    • The first meeting took place in 1994 in the Bahamas, and COP15 is the latest.

8. Senior nuclear scientist Dinesh Kumar Shukla is new head of Atomic Energy Regulatory Board

  • Dinesh Kumar Shukla has been appointed as the chairperson of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) for a period of three years.
  • Shukla, who has been the executive director of the AERB, succeeds G Nageswara Rao to the top post.
  • The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board was constituted on 15 November 1983 by the President of India.

9. Steel Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia launches country’s first Green Steel Brand

  • Steel Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia launched India’s first Green Steel Brand – KALYANI FeRRESTA in New Delhi.
  • This first-of-its-kind steel has been manufactured by a Pune-based Steel company, Kalyani group by using renewable energy resources, leaving zero carbon footprints in the environment.

    • Green steel is the manufacturing of steel without the use of fossil fuels.

10. Puducherry, Lakshadweep and Goa adjudged best performers among States/UTs in Social Progress Index

  • The Economic Advisory Council to Prime Minister (EAC-PM) along with Institute for Competitiveness and Social Progress Imperative today released the Social Progress Index (SPI) for States and Districts of India as mandated by the EAC-PM.
  • Puducherry, Lakshadweep, and Goa stand out as the best-performing States in the index.

  • The Empowered Committee headed by CEO, NITI Aayog approved incentives for two companies Foxconn India and Padget Electronics for mobile manufacturing.
  • These incentives have been approved under Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes for the Large-Scale Electronics Manufacturing sector.

12. Jammu & Kashmir tops scheme to assist microenterprises, shows govt data

  • Jammu & Kashmir has generated the most number of jobs among all the states and Union territories under the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) in the current fiscal year.
  • The credit-linked subsidy scheme facilitates employment generation opportunities by assisting in setting up of new self-employment projects and microenterprises in the non-farm sector.

13. Bengaluru tops in Grade-A flexible among 12 APAC cities: CBRE report

  • Bengaluru has the highest flexible stock of Grade-A assets among 12 major Asia-Pacific (APAC) cities, according to CBRE’s H2 2022 report on the flexible office market in the region.
  • As of September 2022, Bengaluru had 10.6 million sq ft of Grade-A flexible stock, ahead of Shanghai, Beijing, Seoul, Tokyo, and Singapore, the study reveals.

14. PMFBY number one crop insurance scheme globally in terms of farmers enrollment: Tomar

  • The Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) has become the world’s number one crop insurance scheme in terms of farmer applications enrolled, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar informed Parliament.
  • The PMFBY is also the world’s third-largest crop insurance scheme in terms of gross premium, said Tomar.

    • Full form = Pradhan Mantri fasal bima yojana.
    • It was launched on 18 February 2016 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as an insurance service for farmers for their yields.
    • It was formulated in line with One Nation–One Scheme theme by replacing earlier two schemes National Agricultural Insurance Scheme (NAIS) and Modified National Agricultural Insurance Scheme (MNAIS)
    • It aims to reduce the premium burden on farmers and ensure early settlement of crop assurance claims for the full insured sum.

15. Google, DigiLocker partner to bring on-device storing of government IDs

  • Google announced a partnership with DigiLocker, a government authorized identification storage system, to bring local storage of government issued IDs on Android devices.
  • Announced at the company’s Google for India conference, the partnership is part of Google’s artificial intelligence (AI) offerings that include on-device processing of text and images to identify documents and organise them in a locally stored ‘Files’ folder.
  • About DigiLocker:
    • DigiLocker is an Indian digitization online service provided by the Government of India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) as part of its Digital India initiative.
    • Every Aadhaar holder receives a cloud account through which they can access authentic documents/certificates such as a driving licence, vehicle registration, and academic mark sheet in digital format from the original issuers of these certificates.
    • It also gives each account 1GB of storage space to upload scanned copies of legacy documents.
