1. Aviation veteran Sanjiv Kapoor appointed CEO of Jet Airways
- As part of their plans of restarting operations by summer, Jet Airways has picked Sanjiv Kapoor, who had previously headed revenue and strategy departments at SpiceJet and Vistara, to lead the new Jet Airways.
- Jet Airways, which is now promoted by Jalan Kalrock consortium, had plans to restart operations during the first quarter of 2022.
2. Arunachal Pradesh to get a Greenfield Airport in Hollongi
- The Airports Authority of India has undertaken the work of constructing a Greenfield Airport in Hollongi, 15 kms from Itanagar considering the importance of air connectivity to the capital city.
- With an estimated cost of Rs.645 crore, the project includes the development work i.e. construction of airport pavements, air side work, terminal Building and city side works.
3. UN telecom body ITU to open its area office in New Delhi for South Asia
- Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Secretary-General Houlin Zhao signed a pact virtually, to establish an area office and innovation centre of the United Nations telecom body in New Delhi.
- The setting up of the area office will provide greater access and engagement to India and South Asian countries in global policy.
- ITU Headquarters : Geneva, Switzerland.
- ITU Founded on 17 May 1865.
4. UN Adopts Historic Resolution to Tackle Plastic Pollution
- Heads of State, Ministers of environment and other representatives from 175 nations endorsed a historic resolution at the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-5) in Nairobi to End Plastic Pollution and forge an international legally binding agreement by 2024.
- The resolution addresses the full lifecycle of plastic, including its production, design and disposal.
- UNEP Headquarters location : Nairobi, Kenya.
5. Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi is new national chess champion
- Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi of Telangana won the 58th edition of Senior National Chess Championship, edging out fellow GMs of Tamil Nadu D Gukesh and P Iniyan in a tie-breaker after the trio finished on 8.5 points each.
- Defending champion Aravindh Chithambaram of Tamil Nadu finished fourth.
- The champion received Rs 6 lakh prize money.
- The 18-year-old Erigaisi remained unbeaten in 11 rounds.
6. PM Sh. Narendra Modi joins QUAD leaders in virtual meet, exchanged views on developments in Indo-Pacific
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated along with President of USA Joseph R Biden, Prime Minister of Australia Scott Morrison, and Prime Minister of Japan Fumio Kishida in a QUAD Leaders’ virtual meeting.
- The leaders had an opportunity to continue their dialogue after the September 2021 Summit in Washington DC.
7. India’s first FSRU Höegh Giant arrives at H-Energy’s Jaigarh terminal in Maharashtra
- India’s first Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU)- has arrived at H-Energy’s Jaigarh Terminal in Maharashtra, the FSRU Höegh Giant which sailed from Keppel Shipyard, Singapore was berthed at Jaigarh terminal in Maharashtra.
- With the berthing of the FSRU Höegh Giant, the LNG regasification terminal will be ready to start testing and commissioning activities soon.
8. Indian shooters Shri Nivetha, Esha Singh and Ruchita Vinerkar win gold at ISSF World Cup in Cairo
- India’s Shri Nivetha, Esha Singh, and Ruchita Vinerkar won the gold medal in the women’s 10m air pistol team event of the ISSF World Cup.
- The Indians shot 16 in the gold medal contest to finish on the podium for the country’s third medal, and second gold, in the year’s first World Cup.
- India lead the standings with three medals, two gold and silver.
9. Over 140 aircraft of IAF to take part in Vayu Shakti 2022 in Pokhran on 7th March
- Over 140 aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF) will take part in the 2022 edition of Vayu Shakti that will be held at Rajasthan’s Pokhran test facility on March 7.
- Rafale, LCA Tejas, Sukhoi-30, and other fighter jets will participate.
- Vayu Shakti, which is IAF’s biggest exercise, is held every three years to showcase the country’s air power.
10. Former Australian wicket-keeper Rod Marsh, 74, dies.
- Former Australian wicket-keeper Rod Marsh has died, aged 74, after being put in an induced coma following a heart attack.
- He featured in 96 Tests for Australia in the seventies and eighties, claiming 355 dismissals, while scoring 3633 runs at 26.51.
- Marsh served as chair of selectors for the men’s national team before stepping down in 2016.
11. Australia’s legendary cricketer Shane Warne dies of heart attack
- Australian cricket legend Shane Warne has died at the age of 52 after a heart attack in Koh Samui, Thailand.
- Warne is widely considered one of the best players in history, having taken 708 wickets in 145 Test matches.
- He was a key member in one of the greatest teams in history, with Australia dominating the sport for much of his 15-year international career.
