1. Vinay Kwatra is new Foreign Secretary, Harsh Shringla coordinator for 2023 G-20
- Indian Ambassador to Nepal Vinay Mohan Kwatra takes over as the new Foreign Secretary of India while present incumbent Harsh Shringla is expected to take over as Coordinator of the G-20 summit, scheduled to take place in New Delhi in November 2023.
- Vinay Kwatra was former ambassador to France and has worked in the Prime Minister’s Office of Sh. Narendra Modi as Joint Secretary.

2. HDFC twins conjoined: HDFC to be merged into HDFC Bank, create financial behemoth with $169-billion market cap
- The board of Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC), India’s leading housing finance company with total assets under management of Rs 5.26 trillion and a market cap of Rs 4.44 trillion, has approved the firm’s and its subsidiaries’ merger with HDFC Bank, the country’s leading private sector bank with a market cap of Rs 8.35 trillion.
- HDFC Investments and HDFC Holdings are the two wholly-owned subsidiaries of HDFC.
3. President Kovind arrives in Amsterdam; names new breed of yellow tulips ‘Maitri’
- President Ram Nath Kovind arrived in Amsterdam on the final leg of his two-nation visit – the first presidential trip to the Netherlands after 34 years.
- During his visit to the Netherlands from April 4 to 7 at the invitation of King Willem Alexander and Queen Maxima, President Kovind would hold discussions with them and Prime Minister Mark Rutte.
4. SBI signs MoU with Border Security Force to offer special benefits through CAPSP Scheme
- State Bank of India (SBI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Border Security Force to offer special benefits to the serving and retired BSF personnel and family pensioners through the Central Armed Police Salary Package (CAPSP) Scheme.
- The MoU will support child education and the marriage of girl children of deceased BSF personnel.
5. India, Turkmenistan sign 4 MoUs for cooperation, agree to expand bilateral trade
- India & Turkmenistan signed 4 agreements, including in financial intelligence & disaster management, as President Ram Nath Kovind met his Turkmen counterpart Serdar Berdimuhamedov & agreed to expand bilateral trade and energy cooperation to further strengthen the multifaceted partnership.
- This is the first-ever visit of the President of India to independent Turkmenistan.

6. Arunabha Ghosh Appointed by UN Chief in High-Level Group on Net-Zero Emissions Commitments
- On March 31, the High-Level Expert Group on Non-State Entities’ Net-Zero Emissions Commitments was established.
- Arunabha Ghosh, CEO of the Delhi-based Council for Energy, Environment, and Water, has been named to a high-level group convened by United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to strengthen action to combat global warming.
- Ghosh is one of three Asians on the expert panel and the only South Asian.
7. China launches the world’s largest electric cruise ship
- The largest electric cruise ship in the world, the ‘Yangtze River Three Gorges 1’ has started its maiden voyage in Yichang in Hubei province.
- The ship is 100 metres long, 16.3 metres wide and has room for 1,300 passengers.
- The electric cruise ship was developed by China Yangtze Power, a subsidiary of China Three Gorges Corp, and the Hubei Three Gorges Tourism Group.
- The ship was built at a cost of 150 million yuan ($23.5 million).
8. Vice Chief Lt Gen Manoj Pande All Set to Become Army Chief
- Army Vice Lieutenant General Manoj Pande is all set to become Chief of the Army Staff with incumbent Army Chief General M.M. Naravane, seen as the frontrunner for the Chief of Defence Staff’s post, is due to retire by the end of this month.
- Lt Gen Pande will take over the reign as he is the senior most in the force after General Naravane.
9. India wins bid to host Asian Junior and Cadet Fencing Championships next year
- India will host the Asian Junior U-20 Men & Women and Cadet U-17 Boys & Girls Fencing Championships in Ahmedabad next year, Fencing Association of India (FAI).
- The championships, which will witness the participation of approximately 1200 fencers from 20 to 25 countries, will take place in March or April, 2023.
10. Iga Swiatek Crushes Naomi Osaka to Win Miami Open, Completes Sunshine Double
- Iga Swiatek’s dream season continued as the incoming world number one scooped her third successive WTA 1000 title to beat Naomi Osaka in the Miami Open final.
- The Polish 20-year-old became only the fourth – and youngest – player to win the “Sunshine Double” of Indian Wells and Miami in the same year.
11. HP Acquires Conference Room Products Maker “Poly” Aiming To Become A Complete Hybrid Work Ecosystem Provider
- HP has announced it is acquiring Poly, a company that specializes in video and audio equipment, for a purchase price of $1.7 billion, with a total transaction value of $3.3 billion, including debt.
- The deal is expected to close by the end of 2022.
- Founded in 1990 and originally named Polycom, the company was acquired by headset maker Plantronics in 2019.
