1. India sets up first & Largest in Asia, Liquid-Mirror telescope In Uttarakhand’s Devasthal
- India has commissioned a one-of-a-kind liquid-mirror telescope atop a mountain in Uttarakhand’s Himalayan range that will monitor the sky for transitory or variable objects such as supernovae, gravitational lenses, space debris, and asteroids.
- International Liquid Mirror Telescope (ILMT) is the country’s first and largest liquid-mirror telescope.
2. India-Senegal sign three MoUs for cultural exchange, cooperation in youth matters and visa free regime for officials
- Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, who is on a three-nation tour to Senegal along with a government delegation, has signed three MoUs -(cultural exchange, cooperation in youth matters and visa free regime for officials) with the West African country to further deepen bilateral partnership in various areas.
- Capital of Senegal: Dakar.
- Currency : West African CFA franc.
3. SAI DG Sandip Pradhan get more than 2 years extension for his tenure
- Sports Authority of India (SAI) Director General Sandip Pradhan was granted a tenure extension of more than two years in his present capacity by the Government of India.
- It’s the second extension granted to Pradhan.
- In May 2020, his tenure was extended by two years.
4. Coal import declines in 2021-22 against 248 mt in 2019-20
- Coal imports, which had reached a peak of 248 Million Ton (MT) in 2019-20, declined continuously during the next two years to 215 MT in 2020-21 and further to 209 MT in 2021-22.
- Despite a steep rise in actual demand for coal from 956 MT in 2019-20 to 1027 MT in 2021-22, coal imports have not increased.
- Coal is a critical input for the power, fertilizer, iron & steel and cement sector.
5. 2021’s highest paid CEO was Elon Musk who is world’s richest man
- Elon Musk — the world’s richest man — was the top-paid chief executive officer in 2021, according to the Fortune 500.
- Musk drew a salary of around $23.5 billion (roughly Rs 1,82,576 crore) after he exercised some Tesla stock options awarded in a 2018 multiyear “moonshot” giant.
- According to the Fortune 500, that was by far the biggest paycheck a CEO ever received.
6. For pensioners’ digital life certificate T.N. signs MoU with India Post Payments Bank (IPPB)
- Tamil Nadu government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the IPPB for obtaining life certificate from pensioners through doorstep services of the Postal Department.
- The doorstep services of the IPPB, for obtaining digital life certificate through Jeevan Pramaan Portal to avoid hardship of coming in person for aged pensioners / family pensions.
7. Sanjit Narwekar conferred with V Shantaram Lifetime Achievement award in MIFF 2022
- The 17th edition of the Mumbai International Film Festival of India (MIFF) opened with a ceremony that saw the Dr. V Shantaram Lifetime Achievement award being conferred on National award-winning author and documentary filmmaker Sanjit Narwekar to commemorate his body of work.
- The award comprises a cash prize of Rs10 lakh, a trophy and a citation.
8. Global Air Powers Ranking 2022: India beats China air force
- The World Directory of Modern Military Aircraft (WDMMA) has released the Global Air Powers Ranking of 2022, which ranked the Indian Air Force as the 3rd strongest Air Force in the world.
- As per the report, the Indian Air Force was ranked higher than the Chinese Air Force but also the Japan Air Self-Defense Force, the Israeli Air Force, & the French Force in strength.
9. Swati Dhingra to join Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee
- Swati Dhingra has been appointed to the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) by chancellor Rishi Sunak.
- The MPC is responsible for deciding what monetary policy action the Bank of England will take to keep inflation low and stable.
- It meets eight times a year to set the Bank of England’s own interest rate.
10. Indian men’s hockey team defeats Japan 1-0 to bag bronze in Asia Cup
- The Indian men’s hockey team beat Japan 1-0 to clinch the bronze medal in the Asia Cup.
- It missed out on a chance to reach the Asia Cup 2022 final after playing out a thrilling 4-4 draw against South Korea at the GBK Sports Complex Hockey Stadium.
- South Korea beat Malaysia 2-1 in a thrilling final.
11. GST revenue jumps 44%; stands at Rs 1.41 lakh cr in May
- GST revenue for May stood at nearly Rs 1.41 lakh crore, a 44 per cent increase over the same month last year, the Finance Ministry.
- Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenues came in lower than the record high collection in April at Rs 1.68 lakh crore.
- In March GST revenues were at Rs 1.42 lakh crore, while in February it was Rs 1.33 lakh crore.
12. Centre to celebrate Telangana formation day on June 2 with Amit Shah as chief guest
- This event marks the first time that the Government of India will be celebrating ‘Telangana Day’ or ‘Telangana Formation Day’ to ensure that it is commemorated in a befitting manner.
- The Ministry of Culture will organise the celebrations at Dr Ambedkar International Centre on June 2.
- Union Home Minister Amit Shah will be the chief guest at the programme.
13. MD & CEO of Punjab & Sind Bank retires
- Punjab & Sind Bank Limited, an Indian nationalised bank, announced that its MD & CEO S Krishnan to retire from the role, with effect from May 31, 2022.
- Prior to joining Punjab & Sind Bank as MD & CEO, Krishnan was Executive Director of Syndicate Bank and Canara Bank.
- He started his career in Indian Bank in January, 1983.
14. Sanjay Kumar Verma selected as CMD, MECON Ltd
- Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) recommended Sanjay Kumar Verma for the Chairman and Managing Director of MECON Limited.
- Currently, he is serving as Director (Commercial) in the said organization.
15. Ministry of Defence inks Rs 2,971-cr contract with BDL to procure ASTRA Mk-I missile system
- The Defence Ministry has signed a contract with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) for the supply of ASTRA MK-I Beyond Visual Range (BVR) Air to Air Missile (AAM) and associated equipment for the Indian Air Force and Indian Navy.
- The total cost of the contract is Rs 2,971 crore under Buy (Indian-IDDM) category.
16. 118th meeting of the India-Pakistan Permanent Indus Commission
- The 118th meeting of the Permanent Indus Commission (PIC) comprising of Indus Commissioners of India and Pakistan was held in New Delhi.
- The Indian delegation was led by Shri A.K. Pal, the Indian Commissioner for Indus Waters and the visiting Pakistan delegation was led by Mr Syed Muhammad Mehar Ali Shah, the Pakistan Commissioner for Indus Waters.
