1. CBDT appointed IRS officer Nitin Gupta as new chairman

  • Nitin Gupta has been appointed as the new Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).
  • The post of the CBDT chief was being held in an additional capacity by Board member and 1986-batch IRS officer Sangeeta Singh after J B Mohapatra retired on April 30.
  • The CBDT is headed by a Chairman and can have six members who are in the rank of special secretary.

2. India’s largest floating solar power project commissioned by TATA Power

  • Tata Power Solar Systems Limited (Tata Power Solar), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tata Power, has accomplished a remarkable feat by commissioning India’s largest floating solar power project in Kayamkulam, Kerala on a 350-acre water body, backwaters area, having an installed capacity of 101.6 Megawatt Peak.

3. G7 leaders pledge 600 billion for developing countries

  • G7 leaders pledged to raise $600 billion in private and public funds over 5 years to finance needed infrastructure in developing countries and counter China’s Belt and Road project.
  • S. President Joe Biden and other G7 leaders relaunched the newly renamed “Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment,” at the G7 summit at Schloss Elmau in southern Germany.

4. Rare carnivorous plant found for first time in western Himalayan region

  • An extremely rare carnivorous plant has been found for the first time in the western Himalayas by the forest department officials of India’s snowbound Uttarakhand state.
  • In September 2021, a team from the Research Wing of the Uttarakhand Forest discovered the Utricularia Furcellata plant in Uttarakhand’s Mandal valley, Chamoli district, at an elevation of 4,800 feet.
  • The plant was last spotted in the nation in 1986 in Meghalaya state’s northeastern region.

5. The ‘Kempegowda International Award’

  • Karnataka State Government has chosen former Chief Minister S.M. Krishna, N.R. Narayana Murthy of Infosys and former Indian badminton player Prakash Padukone for the first edition of ‘Kempegowda International Award‘ to be conferred on the occasion of Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Jayanthi on June 27 in the presence of Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai.
  • The award carries a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh along with a plaque.

6. World’s biggest bacterium found in Caribbean mangrove swamp

  • The bacterium is named Thiomargarita magnifica or “magnificent sulfur pearl” and can reach a length of 2 centimetres.
  • It is roughly 50 times larger than all known giant bacteria.
  • The thin white filament, approximately the size of a human eyelash, is by far the largest bacterium known to date.
  • First example of this bacterium was found in the archipelago of Guadeloupe in 2009.

7. India gains rank on Ookla Speedtest Global Index in May

  • Speedtest Global Index released by network intelligence and connectivity insights provider Ookla showed that India recorded 14.28 Mbps median mobile download speeds in the month of May, slightly better than 14.19 Mbps in April.
  • With this, India is at 115th position.
  • India improved its global ranking for overall fixed median download speeds, from 76th in April to 75th in May.
  • Norway and Singapore are on top spots for global mobile speeds and fixed broadband speeds.

8. IRARC’s Avinash Kulkarni to head India Debt Resolution Company

  • The chief executive of India Resurgence Asset Reconstruction Company (IRARC), Avinash Kulkarni, has been selected to head the India Debt Resolution Company (IDRCL) which will be the sole agent to resolve more than ₹83,000 crore of bad loans to be acquired by the government-backed National Asset Reconstruction Company (NARCL).
  • He replaced Manish Makharia.
  • IDRCL is a private sector company controlled by private sector banks that own a 51% share.

9. South Korea launches homegrown Nuri rocket carrying satellites into orbit

  • South Korea successfully launched satellites into orbit with its homegrown Nuri rocket.
  • The three-stage Nuri rocket, built by the government’s Korea Aerospace Research Institute ​together with hundreds of local companies, ​blasted off from the Naro Space Center in Goheung​ on the southwestern tip of South Korea.

10. Bengaluru’s Digantara, Hyderabad start-up Dhruva become first to get IN-SPACe authorisation

  • Bengaluru’s Digantara and Hyderabad-based Dhruva Space became the first two private firms to receive authorization letters later on.
  • The letters were handed over after the DeSSEI conference in Bengaluru.
  • Both firms will be launching their payloads as part of Isro’s PSLV-C53 mission scheduled for a June 30 launch.
  • Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe) chairman – Pawan Goenka.

11. Iran launches a solid-fueled rocket ‘Zuljanah’ into space

  • Iran has launched a solid-fueled rocket into space.
  • Named Zuljanah, this 25.5 meter-long rocket is capable of carrying a satellite of 220 kilograms that will ultimately gather data in low-earth orbit and promote Iran’s space industry.
  • Zuljanah is named for the horse of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.

12. Coal Ministry Action Plan to enhance coking coal production substantially

  • India has produced 51.7 MT raw coking coal during the financial 2021-22 which is 15 % more as compared to 44.8 MT during FY21.
  • Domestic raw coking coal production continues to witness an increasing trend in the current fiscal as well with production of 8.3 MT, as per the figures up to May ’22, which is 20% more compared to 6.9 MT during the same period of previous year.

13. Swachh Bharat Mission- Urban 2.0 launches Revised Swachh Certification Protocols to sustain Open Defecation Free (ODF) Status

  • Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0, being implemented by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), has launched the Revised Swachh Certification Protocols for ODF, ODF+, ODF++, and Water+ certifications.
  • The Revised Swachh Certification Protocols is more functionality-oriented and has been simplified for officials and citizens to understand it better.
  • Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 was launched on 1st October 2021.

14. Goa celebrates ‘Sao Joao’ festival

  • A large number of people participated in the boat parade in Siolim village of Goa’s Bardez taluka, marking the beginning of revelry in the ‘Sao Joao’ festival.
  • The festival sees revellers plunging into water bodies in the morning to commemorate the day in the name of St John De Baptista who was believed to have baptised Jesus Christ.

15. IAF To Participate In Tactical Leadership Programme With Egyptian Air Force

  • Indian Air Force would be participating in Tactical Leadership Programme at Egyptian Air Force Weapon School from 24 Jun – 24 Jul 22 in Egypt.
  • It is a unique exercise with Air assets in a Large Force Engagement environment, simulating various conflict scenarios.
  • The exercise is aimed at enhancing defence cooperation between two countries and the exchange of best practices.
  • Desert Warrior is a military exercise conducted by Air forces of India and Egypt.

16. India successfully test-fires VL-SRSAM missile from Indian naval ship off Odisha coast

  • DRDO and the Indian Navy successfully flight-tested Vertical Launch Short Range Surface to Air Missile (VL-SRSAM) from an Indian Naval Ship at Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur off the coast of Odisha.
  • The VL-SRSAM, a ship-borne weapon system, is meant for neutralising various aerial threats at close ranges including sea-skimming targets.
  • VL-SRSAM can engage incoming aircraft at any altitude between 3 mts and 4,000 mts.

17. Consumption basket expanded, revamped consumer expenditure survey begins July 1

  • The government will launch fieldwork for the new Consumer Expenditure Survey on July 1, with the revamp including features such as three visits by an enumerator to a household to seek more detailed information on their consumption basket.
  • The survey will cover around 1.2 lakh households in rural areas and around 84,000 households in urban areas.
  • Consumer Expenditure Survey (CES) is usually conducted at quinquennial (every 5 years).

18. Government of India hosted its first-ever National Logistics Excellence Awards in New Delhi

  • The National Logistics Excellence Awards aim to acknowledge the many logistics service providers in the country that have been able to display innovation, diversity & efficiency.
  • With 169 entries and 12 categories for awards in 1st edition, the Ministry of Commerce and Industries undertook year-long process of identifying, categorising, and selecting qualified applications
  • National Logistics Excellence Awards has been launched by Ministry of Commerce & Industry.

19. Ambubachi Mela 2022: 4-day-long festival commences in Guwahati’s Kamakhya temple

  • The four-day-long Ambubachi Mela kickstarted on June 23 at the famous Kamakhya temple atop the Nilachal Hills in Assam’s Guwahati after a gap of two years.
  • Due to the devastating floods in the state, the festival is being observed in a subdued manner this year.
  • This is the most important religious event of the temple and is also a significant part of the state’s tourism.
  • Kamakhya temple is among the major 18 Maha Shakti Peethas in all 108 Shakti Peethas.
