1. To measure pollution in rural India IIT Kanpur to set up network of air quality sensors
- IIT Kanpur announced that it will be launching a USD 2.5 million project to install nearly 1,400 sensors in rural blocks of Uttar Pradesh & Bihar.
- It is looking forward to launching this project to bolster the measurement of air pollution in rural India.
- The 3-year pilot project is expected to pave the way for a national network of air quality sensors in rural India.
2. B K Syngal, former VSNL chief, ‘father of internet in India’, dies at 82
- Brijendra Kumar Syngal, former chairman of Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited,referred to as father of internet in India, passed away.
- An IITian, Syngal left satellite communications company Inmarsat to take charge of VSNL in 1991.
- Under his watch, the company rolled out India’s internet service and launched its then biggest global depository receipt issue.
3. Abhishek Verma, Jyothi Surekha Vennam win bronze in archery at the World Game
- India has won its first medal at The World Games 2022 being held in Birmingham, USA, with the archer duo of Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Abhishek Verma bagging a bronze medal in archery, bringing home the country’s first-ever medal in the discipline by defeating Canada’s Andrea Becerra & Miguel Becerra.
- The 11th edition of The World Games is taking place in Birmingham, Alabama, USA from 7-17 July.
4. Union minister Meenakshi Lekhi launches book on sacrifice of freedom fighters
- Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Culture Meenakshi Lekhi launched a book in Gujarati commemorating the contributions of freedom fighters at a function in Ahmedabad.
- The book, ‘Swadhinata Sangram Na Surviro’, celebrates 75 freedom fighters and shares the stories of the sacrifices made by them for the country.
- Book was launched by the Hindu Spiritual & Service Foundation in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
5. India becomes 68th country to join Interpol’s child sexual abuse database
- India joined the Interpol’s international child sexual exploitation (ICSE) database which will allow it to draw links between victims, abusers and crime scene using audio-visual data.
- The CBI, which is India’s nodal agency for Interpol matters, joined the database making India the 68th country to connect to it.
6. Shri Rajendra Prasad assumes the charge of Managing Director of National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited
- Rajendra Prasad has been appointed as the Managing Director of National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) after the government dismissed Satish Agnihotri over corruption allegations.
7. Brajesh Kumar Upadhyay has been appointed as CMD of GSL
- The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Brajesh Kumar Upadhyay as Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) of Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL).
- His appointment’s tenure is 5 years.
- GSL is a PSU under the Ministry of Defence.
8. Trading portal ‘mRube’ to offer a quality certification scheme of rubber at ₹1/tonne
- mRube, the electronic trading platform for natural rubber, will offer a unique scheme of certifying the commodity’s quality certification at the rate of ₹1 per tonne for product manufacturers buying rubber through the portal.
- The Rubber Board has launched the electronic platform to improve the efficacy of the domestic supply chain for natural rubber.
9. To develop climate-resistant varieties Coffee Board to collaborate with ISRO
- The State-run Coffee Board is planning to focus on developing new varieties that will be resistant to the changing climatic patterns.
- A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Coffee Board and ISRO was signed with regard to breeding climate-resilient varieties and assessing the carbon sequestration potential in coffee among others.

10. Weeklong Kharchi festival in Tripura began on 7th July
- In Tripura, a week-long traditional Kharchi festival — offering prayer to 14 gods and goddess — began on July 7 with thousands of devotees converging at Khayerpur on the eastern outskirts of the city.
- Khar means sin and chi means cleaning.
- Hence, the festival is referred to as the “cleaning of sins” festival.
11. UP becomes only state to have 13 expressways
- Uttar Pradesh has become the first state in the country to have 13 expressways.
- Of these 13 expressways having a total length of 3,200 kilometers, work is going on, on seven while six expressways are operational.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the 296-km-long Bundelkhand Expressway on July 16 and with that Bundelkhand will be directly connected to Delhi.
12. 6th Deputy National Security Advisor level meeting concludes in Kochi
- Under the National Security Council Secretariat of India,the member states of the Colombo Security Conclave comprising India, Maldives, Mauritius and Sri Lanka, successfully concluded the 6th Deputy National Security Advisor level meeting held in Kochi.
- First Deputy National Security Advisor level meeting was held virtually between India, Sri Lanka & Maldives in August, 2021.
13. Axis Bank signs MOU with Indian Air Force to offer benefits to all ranks of personnel
- Axis Bank announced signing an MOU (memorandum of understanding) with the Indian Air Force.
- According to the press release, the bank will offer a ‘defence service salary package’ with best-in-class benefits and features under its ‘Power Salute’ initiative.
14. José Eduardo dos Santos, Longtime Angolan Ruler, Dies at 79
- Angola’s former long-term ruler, President Jose Eduardo dos Santos, died in a hospital in the Spanish city of Barcelona, where he had been living in self-imposed exile.
- He was 79.
- He ruled his country for 38 years, from Agostinho Neto’s death in 1979 — four years after Angola won independence from Portugal — until 2017, when he stepped down voluntarily as president.
