1. Canara Bank launches its mobile app-Canara ai1

• Canara Bank launched Canara ai1, its mobile banking app.
• The banking app would be a one-stop solution with more than 250 features to cater to the banking needs of its customers.
• The app is available in 11 languages to cater to multiple sections of society in their preferred language.

2. ADB lowers India’s growth forecast to 7.2% for FY23 due to surging food, fuel prices

• The Asian Development Bank (ADB) brought down its FY23 growth forecast for India to 7.2 percent, from 7.5 percent in April this year.
• The Bank attributed the revised forecast to surging food and fuel prices in India.
• This can further be linked to ongoing geo-political tensions and supply-chain disruptions worsening the economic conditions.

3. ‘The Light We Carry’: Michelle Obama’s second book to hit stands in November

• After the huge success of her acclaimed memoir “Becoming” in 2018, former US first lady Michelle Obama has announced the release of her second book, “The Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain Times”, later this year.
• The book, scheduled to release on November 15, will be published by Penguin Random House simultaneously in 14 languages and 27 countries.

4. Prime Minister of Italy Mario Draghi resigns

• Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi has submitted his resignation to President Sergio Mattarella after key coalition parties withdrew their support for his government.
• Draghi, a former European Central Bank chief, became prime minister in 2021.
• The resignation opens the way for early elections in September or October.

5. Niti Aayog study shows India’s R&D spends amongst the lowest in the world

• India’s gross expenditure on research and development (R&D) is one of the lowest in the world, with just $43 per capita, according to NITI Aayog’s India Innovation Index 2021.
• India’s gross expenditure on R&D (GERD) as a percentage of GDP has been consistent and hovered around 0.7% for about a decade.
• This is even lower than Brazil (1.16%), South Africa (0.83%) and others.
• Study was conducted by NITI Aayog and Institute for Competitiveness.

6. IndusInd Bank, EazyDiner partner to launch a co-branded credit card

• IndusInd Bank announced a partnership with table reservation platform EazyDiner to launch a tailor-made co-branded credit card – EazyDiner IndusInd Bank Credit Card.
• The cardholder will get complimentary EazyDiner Prime membership that will offer a guaranteed discount of up to 25% at select restaurants.

7. FICCI survey: India’s FY23 growth forecast cut to 7%, RBI to stay hawkish

• The Indian economy is expected to expand 7% in fiscal 2022/23, slower than a previous estimate of 7.4% and the central bank’s 7.2% projection, according to a survey by India’s leading industry body, FICCI.
• The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) was expected to stay hawkish to tackle elevated inflation, the survey of top independent economists, showed.

8. Indian-origin professor of engineering wins prestigious Global Energy Prize

• Kaushik Rajashekara, an Indian-origin professor of engineering at the University of Houston, has won the prestigious Global Energy Prize for outstanding contributions to transportation electrification and energy efficiency technologies while reducing power generation emissions.
• Only three people in the world were selected this year for the honour.

9. India and Bangladesh agree for effective implementation of Comprehensive Border Management Plan to curb border crimes

• The border guarding forces of India and Bangladesh held talks on curbing trans-border crimes and taking necessary measures to ensure peace and tranquillity along the border at the 52nd Director General-level coordination conference.
• The five-day conference from July 17-21 between Border Security Force (BSF) and Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) was held in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

10. 9th ASEAN-India meet on transnational crimes held virtually

• Ninth ASEAN-India Senior Officials Meeting on Transnational Crimes (SOMTC) was held in a virtual mode where both sides strongly condemned terrorism in all its forms while emphasizing the need to boost international cooperation to combat terrorism and transnational crimes.
• The 10th ASEAN-India SOMTC Consultation on Transnational Crimes will be held in 2023 in Indonesia.

11. Indian Men’s team bags silver medal at ISSF World Cup

• The Indian men’s 25m rapid fire pistol team comprising Anish Bhanwala, Vijayveer Sidhu and Sameer won the silver medal on the last day of the ISSF World Cup Changwon 2022 in South Korea.
• ISSF = International Shooting Sport Federation.
• The medal helped India retain the top spot on the medals table with five gold, six silver and four bronze.
