1. NHPC inks pact with Himachal Pradesh for 500 MW Dugar hydro project

  • State-owned hydro power giant NHPC has inked a pact with the Himachal Pradesh government for the implementation of 500 MW Dugar Hydroelectric Project in Chamba district.
  • Earlier, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for 449 MW Dugar Hydro Electric Project was signed between NHPC and government of Himachal Pradesh on September 25, 2019.
  • Dugar Hydroelectric Project is expected to generate 1,759.85 million units in a year.

2. Five teams win ₹1 lakh award at Smart India Hackathon 2022 organised by Ministry of Education

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Smart India Hackathon 2022 grand finale via video conferencing.
  • The Prime Minister interacted with the participants and discussed the projects they were developing.
  • Launched in 2017, Smart India Hackathon is a nationwide initiative to provide students a platform to offer out-of-the-box ideas to solve problems in governance.

3. SP Jain professor Ananth Narayan appointed as SEBI whole-time member

  • Ananth Narayan Gopalakrishnan, an associate professor at SP Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR), was on August 27, appointed a whole-time member of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).
  • With this appointment, Ananth Narayan becomes the fourth whole-time member of SEBI, which had been operating with a vacancy for the position since November 2021.

4. South Korea breaks its own record for world’s lowest fertility rate, according to official figures

  • South Korea has once again shattered its own record for the world’s lowest fertility rate as it faces the prospect of its population of 51 million people more than halving by the end of this century.
  • According to a Bloomberg report, Korean women were estimated, based on 2021 data, to have an average of just 0.81 children over their lifetimes, down from 0.84 a year earlier.
  • of newborns declined last year to 260,600, which equates to about 0.5% of the population.

5. BOB financial launches Contactless Credit Card, Yoddha, with the Indian Army

  • A co-branded RuPay credit card for Indian Army personnel has been introduced by BOB Financial Solutions Limited (BFSL), a fully owned subsidiary of Bank of Baroda (BoB), in collaboration with National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
  • The Yoddha co-branded credit card will be available on the RuPay platform and have contactless features.

6. SBI tops chart in debit card market, HDFC leads credit card

  • According to the latest data, SBI remains the top player with a 30% market share of debit cards as of June 2022 despite a 6% drop in year-on-year growth.
  • The data collated by PGA Labs show that public sector banks dominate the market share of debit cards.
  • With an 8% market share, BoB secured 2nd place followed by Bank of India, Canara Bank, Union Bank and PNB with 5% each.
  • HDFC Bank topped the charts in the credit cards segment with 22%.

7. LG Sinha inaugurates 8th India International MSME Start-up Expo and Summit 2022 at New Delhi

  • Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha inaugurated the 8th India International MSME Start-up Expo & Summit at New Delhi.
  • The Expo provides a much needed platform to SMEs, startups, trade, industry, service providers to explore new opportunities, buyers-sellers meet, sharing knowledge about central/state’s/UTs schemes etc.

8. AirAsia India becomes the first airline in India to use AI-powered CAE Rise Training System

  • AirAsia India is collaborating with CAE to integrate the CAE Rise Training System into the airline’s simulator training programme, making it the first airline in India to adopt a data-driven programme using CAE Rise.

9. India’s first electric double-decker bus is on the road in Mumbai

  • Union transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on August 18th launched India’s first electric double-decker bus at YB Centre in south Mumbai.
  • Named Switch EiV 22, the double-decker bus will be run by the Mumbai civic transport body from September.

10. DEPwD to introduce 3D printing technology replacing manual customisation of prosthetics

  • Central govt’s department of empowerment of persons with disabilities (DEPwD) is gearing up to introduce 3D printing technology to gradually replace manual customisation of devices like artificial limbs and spinal braces to enhance mobility.
  • Delhi based PDUNIPPD tested the tech on Delhi based 18 year old Payal Solanki, who is the first recipient of a 3D printed spinal brace

11. Nagaland gets its second Railway station on Dhansari-Shokhuvi railway line after gap of over 100 years

  • Nagaland got its second Railway station on Dhansari-Shokhuvi railway line after a gap of more than 100 years.
  • Dimapur station was opened in 1903.
  • Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio officially flagged off the first passenger train service- the Donyi Polo Express from Shokhuvi Railway station in Choumukedima District on August 26

12. PM Modi to participate in Khadi Utsav in Ahmedabad, inaugurate pedestrian-only Atal Bridge on Sabarmati River

  • Khadi utsav is being organised as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav to highlight the importance of khadi in the country’s freedom struggle.

13. Haridwar declared best aspirational district among 117 district in India: NITI Aayog

  • The NITI Aayog has declared the holy city of Haridwar in Uttarakhand as the best aspirational district on five parameters, thereby providing an additional allocation of three crore rupees.
  • Launched in 2018, NITI Aayog’s Aspirational Districts Programme is aimed at identifying potential districts that can develop into model blocks through socio-economic development.

14. HDFC Bank to acquire 9.94% in Go Digit Life

  • HDFC Bank has entered into an indicative and non-binding term sheet with Go Digit Life Insurance Ltd.
  • In an exchange filing, the bank stated it will invest Rs. 120 crore in two tranches to acquire up to 9.94% equity stake in the company.
  • The company recently filed draft papers with the market regulator to raise around Rs.5,000 crore through an initial public offering (IPO).

15. For the first time since its institution, Supreme Court of India live streams proceedings

  • The proceedings were live streamed for the ceremonial bench of outgoing CJI Ramana. Following the custom, Justice Ramana shared the bench with CJI-designate Justice UU Lalit.
  • For the first time in its history, the Supreme Court of India live streamed its proceedings.
  • The development came on the day when incumbent Chief Justice N V Ramana was retiring.
  • The top court in 2018 had allowed live streaming of court proceedings.

16. Bank credit growth accelerates to 14.2 pc in June quarter: RBI data

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) released the ‘Quarterly Statistics on Deposits and Credit of SCBs for June 2022’.
  • This data is collected from all scheduled commercial banks (SCBs), which include regional rural banks (RRBs), small finance banks (SFBs) and payments banks (PBs).

17. BioAsia 2023 to be held in February 24-26 In 2023

  • The 20 th edition of BioAsia, the marquee life sciences and health tech event, hosted by the Government of Telangana, will be conducted from February 24-26, 2023.
  • Minister for Industries and Commerce, KT Rama Rao, has launched the logo and the theme “Advancing for ONE: Shaping the next generation of humanized healthcare” of BioAsia 2023.
