7. Uttar Pradesh Achieves 100% ODF Plus Coverage under Swachh Bharat Mission Grameen
- The State of Uttar Pradesh has achieved a significant milestone under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) Phase II, with all 95,767 villages in the State attaining ODF Plus status, marking a 100% achievement rate. This progress is noteworthy, as on 1st January 2023, only 15,088 villages in the State had been declared ODF Plus.

- An ODF Plus village is one that has sustained its Open Defecation Free (ODF) status while implementing either solid or liquid waste management systems.
- Currently, 4.4 lakh (75%) villages across the nation have declared themselves ODF Plus, which is a significant step towards achieving the SBM-G phase II goals by 2024-25.
- This achievement of 100% is marked during the ongoing Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) – 2023 campaign, which is celebrated annually from 15th September to 2nd October under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen), Drinking Water & Sanitation Department, Ministry of Jal Shakti.
- The top-performing States/UTs that have achieved 100% ODF Plus villages are Andaman & Nicobar Islands, D&N Haveli, Goa, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, Kerala, Ladakh, Puducherry, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Tripura. Among States/ UTs, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Dadra Nagar Haveli & Daman Diu, Jammu & Kashmir, and Sikkim have 100% ODF Plus Model villages.
8. India retains 40th rank in the Global Innovation Index 2023
- In the Global Innovation Index 2023 rankings published by the World Intellectual Property Organization, India retains its 40th rank out of 132 economies. Over the past several years, India has been on a rising trajectory in the Global Innovation Index (GII), from a rank of 81 in 2015 to 40 in 2023.

- The country ranked first among the 37 lower-middle group income and first among the 10 economies in Central and South America.
- This year, the NITI Aayog, in partnership with the CII and the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), is hosting the India Launch of the GII 2023 virtually on 29th September 2023.
- Switzerland, Sweden, the United States, the United Kingdom and Singapore are the world’s most innovative economies in 2023, according to WIPO’s Global Innovation Index (GII).
- The GII 2023 uses 80 indicators to track global innovation trends.
9. HP partners with Google to manufacture Chromebooks for Indian market
- HP, a global PC manufacturer, has announced a partnership with technology giant Google to produce Chromebooks in India, in alignment with the government’s Make in India initiative.
- The devices will be manufactured at HP’s Flex Facility located near Chennai.
- The Chromebooks produced in India will be exclusively sold in the Indian market and will not be exported to other countries.
10. India’s external debt at $629.1 bn at Jun-end, debt-GDP ratio declines: RBI
- According to data from the Reserve Bank, India’s external debt increased slightly to USD 629.1 billion at the end of June 2023, although the debt-to-GDP ratio decreased.
- The debt increased by approximately USD 4.7 billion from USD 624.3 billion at the end of March.
- Lending to small, medium, and large industries also slowed to 6.1 per cent year-on-year in August 2023 from 11.4 per cent in August 2022.

- The largest component of India’s external debt remains US dollar-denominated debt, accounting for 54.4 per cent at the end of June 2023, followed by debt denominated in the Indian rupee (30.4 per cent), SDR (5.9 per cent), yen (5.7 per cent), and the euro (3.0 per cent).
- Excluding the valuation effect, external debt would have increased by USD 7.8 billion instead of USD 4.7 billion at the end of June 2023 over the end of March 2023.
- Credit growth to the services sector accelerated to 20.7 per cent year-on-year from 17.4 per cent a year ago, primarily due to non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) and commercial real estate.
- Loans to NBFCs improved to 25.8 per cent in August 2023 from 25.5 per cent a year ago.
- Bank loans to commercial real estate showed a substantial rise to 13.9 per cent year-on-year, up from 4.8 per cent a year ago.
- Credit growth to agriculture and allied activities also improved to 16.6 per cent year-on-year in August 2023 from 13.4 per cent a year ago, according to the RBI.
11. Bank credit growth to dip to 13-13.5% in FY24, 13.5-14% in FY25: CRISIL
- CRISIL Ratings predicts that bank credit growth will decrease to 13-13.5 per cent in the current financial year before increasing to 13.5-14 per cent in FY25, compared with 15.9 per cent in FY23.
- The moderation of credit growth in FY24 is expected due to the anticipated decline in GDP growth 6 per cent from 7.2 per cent.

- Growth in wholesale credit, which accounts for around 60 per cent of credit, is seen slowing to 11-11.5 per cent in FY24 from a decadal high of 15 per cent. Retail credit, which comprises 28 per cent of bank credit, is expected to grow at a similar rate of 19-20 per cent as compared with FY23.
