1. World Environment Day 2020
- World Environment Day is observed every year on 5 June and is celebrated by more than 100 countries.
- In 2020, Colombia in partnership with Germany will host the global World Environment Day.
- The theme for 2020 is “Time for Nature”.
2. Centre approves amendment to Essential Commodities Act
- The Union Cabinet has approved amendment to the six-and-a-half-decade old Essential Commodities Act to deregulate food items, including cereals, pulses, potatoes, oilseeds and onion.
- This move will transform the farm sector and help raise farmers’ income.
- It was a part of the ₹ 20 crore package announced recently.
3. Uday Kotak takes over as CII President
- Uday Kotak, MD & CEO Kotak Mahindra Bank assumed office as president of the Confederation of Indian Industry for the year 2020-21.
- Mr. Kotak takes over from Vikram Kirloskar, chairman and MD of Kirloskar Systems and vice-chairman of Toyota Kirloskar Motor.
- Sanjiv Bajaj has taken over as the Vice – President of CII.
4. Cabinet approves renaming of Kolkata Port Trust as Syama Prasad Mookerjee Trust
- Union Cabinet chaired by PM Narendra Modi had given its approval to rename Kolkata Port as Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port.
- The Kolkata Port is the first Major port as well as the only riverine port of the country.
- Syama Prasad was a politician & barrister.
- He was the founder of Bharatiya Jana Sangh, predecessor to BJP.
5. Twitter Names Ex-Google Exec Patrick Pichette Chairman
- Twitter Inc appointed Patrick Pichette who had been Twitter’s lead independent director since 2018.
- He is a former CFO at Google.
- Patrick Pichette will replace Omid Kordestani.
6. Three Electronics Incentive Schemes launched
- Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar launched three incentive schemes – Production Linked Incentive, Component Manufacturing Scheme & Modified Electronics Manufacturing Clusters to boost manufacturing of electronics.
- Total outlay of the schemes is about ₹48,000 crores.
- Portals for three schemes released by IFCI, a public-sector NBFC.
7. Virendra Nath Datt given additional charge as NFL CMD
- NFL = National Fertilizers Limited.
- He is former executive director at GAIL.
- Datt has been director (marketing) of the firm since October 2018.
- He was also a director on the Board of Mahanagar Gas Ltd, Mumbai.
8. Telangana CM inaugurates Kondapochamma Reservoir in Siddipet
- Telangana CM K Chandrashekar Rao inaugurated a pump house in Siddipet district to lift Godavari water to a reservoir which is at a height of 618 meters from the source of Godavari river.
- This is to facilitate areas which did not have irrigation facilities.
- The river and the reservoir are 200 kilometres away.
9. Hyundai introduces upgraded online retail platform ‘Click to Buy’
- Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) introduced its upgraded online end-to-end automotive retail platform.
- The platform ‘Click to Buy’ with an investment of around $ 1 million (around 7.5 crores) curated to provide future retail experience to customers in the wake of pandemic.
- Mr. Seon Seob Kim is the MD & CEO of Hyundai Motor India Ltd.
10. THE Asia University Ranking: 8 Indian institutes in top 100
- With eight institutes in the top 100, India is the third most represented country in the Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Ranking.
- Indian Institute of Science Bangalore retains its top position in the country by attaining the 36th spot globally.
- Eight IITs have also been featured in the top 100.
11. WEF Davos summit to focus on ‘The Great Reset’ in 2021
- World Economic Forum will adopt a new twin-summit format for its next annual Davos meeting in Jan 2021, bringing together leaders from across the globe for in-person as well as virtual dialogues.

12. Ex-Pakistan first-class cricketer Riaz Sheikh dies
- Former Pakistan first-class cricketer Riaz Sheikh became the second professional player in the country to die because of suspected coronavirus.
- A leg-spinner who took 116 wickets in 43 first-class matches was at one time considered for national selection.
- Zafar Sarfraz – first professional cricketer to die due to COVID.
