1. Integrated Election Complex with state-of-art infrastructure inaugurated by CEC Shri Sushil Chandra

  • Chief Election Commissioner of India, Shri Sushil Chandra along with Shri Anup Chandra Pandey inaugurated the Integrated Election Complex at Bakhtawarpur, Delhi for warehousing and management of EVMs & VVPATs of NCT of Delhi.

2. Star9 Mobility emerges highest bidder for Govt’s 51% stake in Pawan Hans

  • Star9 Mobility Pvt Ltd has emerged as the highest bidder for the government’s 51 per cent stake in Pawan Hans Ltd (PHL) with a bid of ₹211.14 crore.
  • The government had set a reserve price of ₹199.2 crore based on the valuation of the experts.

3. 5 thousand LPG panchayats on the occasion of Ujjwala Diwas on May 1

  • Oil marketing companies will organise more than five thousand LPG Panchayats on the occasion of ‘Ujjwala Diwas’ on the 1st of May.
  • All efforts will be made to maximise customer enrolment apart from experience sharing, aimed at safe and sustained usage of LPG.

4. Lt Gen BS Raju appointed new Vice Chief of Indian Army; to assume charge on 1st May

  • The government appointed Lieutenant General Baggavalli Somashekar Raju as the new Vice Chief of Army Staff (VCOAS).
  • Lt Gen Raju replaces Lieutenant General Manoj Pande, who has been appointed as the next Chief of Army Staff.
  • Lt Gen Pande will also take over as the 29th Army Chief on May 1.
  • Lieutenant General P. P. Kumaramangalam was the first VCOAS.

5. EU emerges top purchaser of fossil fuels from Russia since Ukraine invasion: CREA report

  • The European Union (EU) was the top purchaser of fossil fuels from Russia, since the country invaded Ukraine in February 24 this year, with imports worth €44 billion that accounted for 71 per cent of Russia’s exports of the commodity worth €63 billion in the period, according to data published by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA).

6. Optum ties up with IIIT-H to set up studio for start-ups

  • Optum Global Solutions (India), an arm of NYSE-listed UnitedHealth Group, has launched an Optum Startup Studio in India in association with the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT-Hyderabad).
  • The studio will identify innovative ideas and start-ups that can help accelerate developing solutions in the healthcare sector.

7. Russia withdraws from UN tourism body ahead of vote on its suspension

  • Russia is withdrawing from the United Nation’s tourism body, the UN World Tourism Organization, ahead of a vote to suspend Moscow’s membership over its military operation of Ukraine.
  • The UNWTO announced in March that it wanted to suspend Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.
  • The decision must be approved by two-thirds of its 159 member states

8. J&K: Samba becomes first district in India to cover 100% households under ABPMJAY- SEHAT scheme

  • In the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, the Samba district of Jammu division has become the first district in India to cover 100% households under Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (ABPMJAY) – SEHAT scheme.
  • SEHAT = Social, Endeavour for Health and Telemedicine.
  • The district achieved this milestone after the conclusion of a special registration drive organized by the State Health Agency (SHA).

9. Cabinet Clears Additional Funding Of Rs 820 Crore For India Post Payments Bank

  • The Union Cabinet has approved an additional funding of Rs 820 crore for India Post Payments Bank that will be utilised for expansion of its services to all post offices in the country.
  • The Cabinet has given its in-principle approval for future fund infusion worth Rs 500 crore into IPPB for meeting regulatory requirements and technological upgradation.

10. India, Russia, China on United States’ intellectual property protection ‘priority watch list’

  • The USA has put India & 6 other countries including China & Russia on its annual ‘Priority Watch List’ for intellectual property protection & enforcement.
  • Other countries on the watch list include : Argentina, Chile, Indonesia, and Venezuela.
  • These countries will be the subject of particularly intense bilateral engagement during the coming year, said the Office USTR.
  • USTR = United States Trade Representative.

11. Ravi Parthasarathy, ex-IL&FS chairman, passes away at 70

  • Former non-executive chairman of IL&FS (Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services) Ravi Parthasarathy died at age 70 in Mumbai after a prolonged illness.
  • An alumnus of IIM Ahmedabad, Parthasarathy joined IL&FS as president in 1987 when the company was founded and became the CEO in 1989.
  • He became the chairman of the company in 2006.

12. CARE Ratings’ Director and CEO, Ajay Mahajan, resigns

  • Ajay Mahajan, managing director and chief executive officer of CARE Ratings resigned from his post citing personal reasons.
  • He was appointed to run the credit rating company two years ago after its former chairman SB Mainak and predecessor MD & CEO Rajesh Mokashi had come under regulatory scrutiny for their alleged influence in rating exercise.

13. A K Bhaduri, director of Ex-IGCAR, passes away

  • Senior nuclear scientist and former director of the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research Arun Kumar Bhaduri breathed his last at Kalpakkam near Chennai.
  • Bhaduri, who worked extensively on fast breeder reactors, served as the director of IGCAR, Kalpakkam, from July 2016 to August 2021.
  • He was awarded the Raja Ramanna Fellowship post retirement.
