1. Mithali Raj announces retirement from all forms of international cricket

  • Indian cricketer and the Test and ODI captain of the country’s women’s national cricket team Mithali Raj announced her retirement from all forms of international cricket.
  • Under Mithali, Indian women’s cricket made some giant strides on the global cricketing map, the biggest one being making the final of the 2017 Women’s World Cup final against England at Lord’s.

2. For cooperation in Rail sector, RITES and Senegal firm sign MoU

  • RITES Ltd., the leading Transport Infrastructure Consultancy and Engineering company, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Grands Trains DU Senegal (GTS-S.A), a railroad company of Senegal, on technical cooperation in the railway sector.
  • The MoU facilitates RITES to offer its services for the operation and maintenance of the railway network and sidings.

3. Union cabinet approves transfer of 10 in-orbit communication satellites from govt to NSIL

  • The Union Cabinet has approved the transfer of 10 in-orbit communication satellites from Government of India (Gol) to NewSpace India Ltd. (NSIL), a wholly-owned Public Sector Enterprise of GOI under the administrative control of the Department of Space.
  • The Union Cabinet has also approved increasing the authorized share capital of NSIL from Rs.1000 crore to Rs.7500 cr.

4. Defence Minister hands over 12 high-speed guard boats to Vietnam

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh handed over to Vietnam 12 high-speed guard boats built under a USD 100 million Line of Credit granted to the Southeast Asian country by India.
  • The boats were given at a ceremony in Hong Ha shipyard.
  • The initial five boats were manufactured at the L&T Shipyard in India and remaining seven were built in Hong Ha shipyard.

5. MD of Maithri Aquatech and first Indian to be recognised as Global SDG pioneer by UNGC

  • Ramkrishna Mukkavilli, the Founder and Managing Director of Maithri Aquatech, was previously selected as India’s SDG Pioneer by the UN Global Compact Network India (GCNI) earlier this year, for his work in building water security with nature-based water solutions across India and 27 countries spanning South East Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.
  • Following this, he was recognized as one of the 10 new SDG Pioneers for 2022.

6. For climate change management, a Practice-based learning programme has been launched

  • Aiming to build capacity among 5,000 urban leaders in climate change adaptation in conjunction with the World Environment Day that was observed on 5 June, the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) and World Resources Institute (WRI) India, jointly announced ‘Leaders in Climate Change Management’ (LCCM), a practice-based learning programme.

7. Shooter Avani Lekhara wins gold at Para World Cup and sets world record

  • Tokyo Paralympics champion Avani Lekhara won gold at the Para Shooting World Cup with a world record score of 250.6 in women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1 in Chateauroux, France.
  • The 20-year-old shooter broke her own world record of 249.6 to secure her a spot at the 2024 Paris Paralympics.
  • Poland’s Emilia Babska bagged the silver medal with a total of 247.6.

8. IISc scientists develop mini-proteins that may prevent COVID infection

  • Researchers at IISc Bangalore have designed a new class of artificial peptides or miniproteins that they say can render viruses like SARS-CoV-2 inactive.
  • According to the study, published in the journal Nature Chemical Biology, the miniproteins can not only block virus entry into our cells but also clump virus particles together, their ability to infect.

9. RBI raises repo rate by 50 bps to 4.90%, real GDP growth FY22-23 is retained at 7.2%

  • The six-member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) led by RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das voted unanimously to raise the repo rate by 50 basis points to 4.90 percent.
  • Standing Deposit Facility (SDF) and Marginal Standing Facility (MSF) rates also raised by 50 basis points.
  • Standing Deposit Facility rate now 4.65 percent, and Marginal Standing Facility rate now 5.15 percent.

10. Govt to monetise assets worth Rs 75,200 cr in coal mining sector in FY23

  • The government plans to monetise assets worth Rs 75,220 crore in the coal mining sector in the current financial year.
  • The monetisation of coal blocks is likely to generate a revenue of Rs 52,200 crore, followed by Rs 20,320 crore from projects on the Mine Developer and Operator (MDO) model, Rs 2,000 crore from discontinued mines and Rs 700 crore from washeries.

11. World Bank cuts India’s economic growth forecast to 7.5% for FY23

  • The World Bank cuts India’s economic growth forecast for the current fiscal to 7.5 per cent as rising inflation, supply chain disruptions and geopolitical tensions taper recovery.
  • This is the second time that the World Bank has revised its GDP growth forecast for India in the current fiscal 2022-23 (April 2022 to March 2023).
  • The GDP growth compares to an 8.7 percent expansion in the previous 2021-22 fiscal.

12. Union Home Minister inaugurates new building of National Tribal Research Institute in New Delhi

  • Home Minister Amit Shah has said that the National Tribal Research Institute will play a crucial role in tribal development.
  • Inaugurating the newly-built National Tribal Research Institute at India Institute of Public Administration Campus in New Delhi.
  • It is being established at a cost of ten crore rupees.

13. National aero sports policy has been launched by Union Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia

  • Union Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has launched a national aero sports policy, which established a four-tier governance structure to promote 11 disciplines including ballooning, paragliding and aerobatics.
  • The policy has been made with a vision of making India one of the top air sports nations by 2030.
  • Air Sports Federation of India (ASFI) will be the apex governing body.

14. Visitor’s Conference 2022, Inaugurated by the President of India

  • The President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, inaugurated the two-day Conference of Vice-Chancellors of Central Universities and Directors of Institutions of National Importance at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
  • The President is the Visitor of 161 Central Institutes of Higher Education.

15. According to US researchers India ranks lowest in global environment performance index

  • India scored the lowest among 180 countries in the 2022 Environment Performance Index (EPI), an analysis by researchers of Yale and Columbia University which provides a data-driven summary of the state of sustainability around the world.
  • The EPI ranks 180 countries on 40 performance indicators including climate change, environmental public health, biodiversity, among others.

16. ‘First time in history’: in the period of drug trial, cancer vanishes from every patient’s body

  • According to the New York Times, in the small clinical trial conducted by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, 18 patients took a drug called Dostarlimab for around six months, and in the end, every one of them saw their tumours disappear.
  • According to experts, Dostarlimab is a drug with laboratory-produced molecules and it acts as substitute antibodies in the human body.
