1. Pushp Kumar Joshi appointed HPCL Chairman and Managing Director

  • Pushp Kumar Joshi, who recently took over as the interim chairman and managing director of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL), has been appointed on the Board of the nation’s third-largest oil refining and fuel marketing company.
  • He was picked by Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) to succeed Mukesh Kumar Surana.

2. Cyclone Asani raging in Bay of Bengal expected to weaken without landfall

  • Asani, the severe cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal, packing gale force winds up to 120 km per hour, was moving towards coastal Andhra Pradesh and Odisha at a speed of 25 km per hour, but expected to weaken gradually over the next two days.
  • The name ‘Asani’ was given by Sri Lanka.
  • Asani or ‘wrath’ in Sinhalese will be the first cyclonic storm of the season.

3. Avinash Sable breaks 30-year-old 5000m national record in US

  • India’s Avinash Sable broke a 30-year-old record of Bahadur Prasad in 5000m, setting a new national record with a timing of 13:25.65 at the Sound Running Track meet in San Juan Capistrano, USA.
  • The 27-year-old from Maharashtra broke the old record of 13:29.70 set by Bahadur Prasad in 1992.
  • Sable also holds the national record in the half marathon.

4. Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh wins Sunway Formentera Open chess tourney

  • Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh emerged champion in the 1st Chessable Sunway Formentera Open 2022 chess tournament.
  • It was a hat-trick of titles for him after he had previously won the La Roda tournament and the Menorca Open in recent weeks.
  • He has now moved up to no.64 in the world rankings.

5. Exim Bank enters into an agreement with the SBM (Mauritius) to provide an additional LoC of USD 190 million

  • Exim Bank has entered into an agreement with the SBM (Mauritius) Infrastructure Development Company Ltd. (SBMIDCL) to provide a supported Line of Credit of USD 190m.
  • The agreement has been entered for the purpose of financing its participation through Redeemable Preference Shares in public sector entities for implementing the ongoing Metro Express & infrastructure Projects.

6. New plant species discovered in Idukki, Kerala

  • A new plant species has been discovered in Idukki district by researchers at the postgraduate and research department of Botany at St. Albert’s College in Kochi.
  • They fall under the genus Peperomia and the newly discovered plant has been named ‘Peperomia Albertiae’ in recognition of the work carried out by researchers.

7. Russia launches a secret military spacecraft into orbit around Earth

  • The Russian space agency has conducted a satellite launch from the Plesetsk cosmodrome using the brand new Angara-1.2 light launch vehicle.
  • According to multiple media reports, the launch that took place from north-western Russia’s Arkhangelsk Oblast region was to deliver a secret military satellite to use against Ukraine.

8. Union Minister Bhagwanth Khuba launches newly manufactured NPK grade of RCF in Mumbai

  • Shri Bhagwanth Khuba, Union Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers & New and Renewable Energy, Govt. of India visited RCF Trombay Unit at Chembur, Mumbai, and launched the newly manufactured NPK grade of Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers limited (RCF) – Suphala 10:26:26.

9. Three-day Utkarsh Mahotsav organized by Central Sanskrit University begins in New Delhi

  • A three-day Utkarsh Mahotsav is being organized by Central Sanskrit University in New Delhi.
  • The objective behind organising the Utkarsh Mahotsav is to promote Sanskrit language across the country and beyond.
  • The focus of the Mahotsav is – the New Educational Era – Moving Towards a Global Orientation of Sanskrit Studies.

10. Kerala govt approves medico-legal protocol for arrested & remanded prisoners

  • Kerala Government has approved the medico-legal protocol related to medical examination of arrested persons and remanded prisoners.
  • The protocol makes it mandatory that the application for medico-legal examination be handed over to a serving medical officer in the State or Central Service.

11. Abhinav Deshwal wins men’s 10m air pistol gold at Deaflympics

  • India won its second gold medal in shooting at the ongoing 24th Deaflympics in Caxias do Sul, Brazil, with Abhinav Deshwal claiming the men’s 10m air pistol title.
  • Abhinav made the top eight final round after finishing second in the 60-shot qualification round with a score of 575 out of 600.

12. Uttar Pradesh govt to provide free wi-fi facility for people within 50 meters of village secretariat

  • Uttar Pradesh government will provide free wi-fi facility at more than 58 thousand places in the villages of the state.
  • This internet facility will be available for the people within 50 meters of the Gram Sachivalaya (village secretariat) building which is being built in every Gram Panchayat of the state.
