1. UN International Day for National Disaster Reduction, 13 October

  • International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction is observed annually on 13 October.
  • The day is observed to spread awareness about disaster risk reduction caused by natural calamities and human beings as well.
  • It was started by the United Nations General assembly in 1989.

2. Infosys President Ravi Kumar S Resigns after 20-year stint

  • IT services major Infosys on October 11 informed the stock exchanges that Ravi Kumar S has resigned as President of the company.
  • In his role as President, Ravi Kumar S led the Infosys Global Services Organization across all industry segments.

3. Justice Ali is now Chief Justice of J&K, Ladakh High Courtt

  • The Central Government notified the elevation of Justice Ali Mohammad Magrey as Chief Justice of the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court.
  • Meanwhile, Justice Pankaj Mittal has been transferred to Rajasthan as Chief Justice of Rajasthan HC and Justice PB Varale is appointed as Chief Justice of Karnataka HC.

4. Adani Data Networks gets licence for full fledged telecom services

  • Adani Data Network has been granted a unified licence for access services, which enables it to provide all telecom services in the country.
  • Adani Data Networks Ltd. a unit of Adani Enterprises Ltd, acquired the right to use 400MHz of spectrum in the 26GHz millimetre wave band worth Rs 212 crore for 20 years in the recent 5G spectrum auction.

5. IMF cuts India’s growth forecast to 6.8% in FY 23

  • The International Monetary Fund (IMF), in its latest World Economic Outlook report, cut its forecast for India’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth in financial year 2022-23 (FY23) by 60 basis points (bps) to 6.8 per cent, warning of a long and tough economic winter.
  • The outlook for India is for growth of 6.8 per cent in 2022, a 0.6 percentage point downgrade since July.
  • The IMF maintained a forecast of 6.1 per cent for FY24.

6. Second UN World Geospatial Congress inaugurated in Hyderabad

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the United Nations World Geospatial Congress (UNWGIC) 2022 in Hyderabad.
  • The goal of this year’s UNWGIC is to promote a broad dialogue on global geospatial information management with all relevant governments, non-governmental organisations, academia, and the private sector.
  • Theme of UNWGIC 2022 is ‘Geo-Enabling the Global Village: No one should be left behind”.

7. CESL sets up first integrated solar charging station in Ladakh region

  • Convergence Energy Services (CESL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL) under the Ministry of Power has established a first-of-its-kind solar-powered charging plaza for electric vehicles in the Ladakh region.
  • EV carport constitutes 100 kW solar PV panels with a 860 kW/hour lithium-ion battery storage system.

8. Chhatrapati Shivaji Airport of Mumbai makes 100% switch to green energy

  • The Adani group-AAI operated Mumbai airport on 10 October said it has switched to green energy sources, fulfilling 95 per cent of its requirement from hydro and wind, while the rest 5 per cent from solar power.
  • The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport was the first in India to launch hybrid technology which has been solely running on green energy since April.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo has reached 700 club career goals after scoring in Manchester United’s 2-1 Premier League win over Everton.

10. Ananth Narayan Gopalakrishnan assumes charge as whole-time member at Sebi

  • Former banker Ananth Narayan Gopalakrishnan took charge as the fourth whole time member (WTM) in the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi), filling the position vacant since November 2021.
  • Narayan, who has been a member of various advisory committees of Sebi and RBI, has been appointed for an initial period of three years.

11. Ben Bernanke, Douglas Diamond, Philip Dybvig win 2022 Nobel Prize in Economics

  • The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2022 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel to Ben S. Bernanke, Douglas W. Diamond and Philip H. Dybvig (all 3 from US) “for research on banks and financial crises.”
  • Notably, Bernake has served as the 14th chairman of the US Federal Reserve from 2006 to 2014.

12. AU Small Finance Bank re-appoints R V Verma as chairman

  • AU Small Finance Bank re-appointed former head of National Housing Bank (NHB) Raj Vikash Verma as its non-executive chairman.
  • Verma, who also served as a whole-time member of the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA), took charge as part-time chairman of the bank on April 8, 2020.

13. PM Inaugurates Phase 1 of Modi Shaikshanik Sankul in Gujara

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Phase 1 of Modi Shaikshanik Sankul, an educational complex for needy students in Ahmedabad.

14. Tele Mental Health Assistance and Networking Across States initiative launched on occasion of World Mental Health Day

  • Establishing a new milestone in the field of mental health on the occasion of World Mental Health Day, Tele Mental Health Assistance and Networking Across States (Tele-MANAS) initiative of the Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare was launched.
  • The Government of India announced the National Tele Mental Health Programme (NTMHP) in the Union Budget 2022-23.

15. Adani Ports receives NCLT approval to acquire 58.1% in Gangavaram Port

  • Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd has received approvals from the National Company Law Tribunals at Ahmedabad and Hyderabad for acquiring 58.1 per cent stake in Gangavaram Port Ltd (GPL) through the composite scheme of arrangement.
  • With this stake purchase, GPL will become a fully-owned subsidiary of APSEZ.
  • The acquisition of GPL is priced at around Rs 6,200 crore.

16. Ashok Leyland, IIT Madras tie up to develop hybrid EVS using turbine tech

  • Ashok Leyland, the flagship company of Hinduja group and a leading commercial vehicle manufacturer,and researchers at the National Centre for Combustion Research and Development (NCCRD) have joined hands for development and commercialisation of ‘swirl mesh lean direct injection system’ for developing hybrid electrical vehicles using turbine technology.
  • NCCRD is an arm of IIT Madras.
  • Sathya Chakravarthy is the Coordinator of NCCRD.

17. Goa to host 37th National Games in October 2023: IOA

  • The Indian Olympic Association has confirmed that Goa will host the 37th edition of the National Games in October next year.
  • The state government of Goa also conveyed its in-principle approval to IOA to host the National Games in 2023.
  • Goa got the rights to host the National Games in 2008 but hasn’t been able to host the games for a number of reasons.
