1. 11 more Indian wetlands get Ramsar recognition, tally rises to 75 sites

  • The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands defines wetlands as “areas of marsh, fen, peat land or water, whether natural or artificial, permanent or temporary, with water that is static or flowing, fresh, brackish or salt, including areas of marine water the depth of which at low tide does not exceed six meters”.
  • What is Wetland?
    • A wetland is a distinct ecosystem that is flooded by permanent water, either or seasonal water.
    • The water in wetlands is either freshwater, brackish or saltwater.
    • It’s also home to a wide range of plant and animal species.

2. 13-day Indo-Oman Joint Military Exercise Al Najaf IV concludes in Rajasthan

  • The Indo Oman Joint Military Exercise Al Najaf IV concluded at Mahajan Field Firing Ranges.
  • This platoon level 13 days exercise commenced on 01 August 2022.
  • The aim of the exercise was to achieve inter-operability and to acquaint each other with operational procedures and combat drills in a Counter Terrorism environment under United Nations mandate.

3. Union Minister Jitendra Singh unveils India’s first Saline Water LED lamp ‘Roshni’

  • Dr Jitendra Singh has launched India’s first Saline Water Lantern which uses the sea water as the electrolyte between specially designed electrodes to power the LED lamps.
  • He unveiled the first-of-its kind lantern named “Roshni” during a visit to SAGAR ANVESHIKA, a Coastal Research Vessel, operated and used by the NIOT, Chennai for coastal research.

4. CCI approves acquisition of stake in IIFL Home indirectly by ADIA Group

  • The Competition Commission of India (CCI) approves acquisition of stake in IIFL Home indirectly by ADIA Group.
  • Platinum Owl is a restricted scope company (private limited company), incorporated in the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM).
  • Platinum Owl is acting in its capacity as trustee for Platinum Jasmine Trust, which was established under the laws of the ADGM.
  • CCI is a statutory body within the Ministry of Corporate Affairs established in 2003.

5. New work from home guidelines for SEZ (Special Economic Zone) units by Commerce Ministry

  • Units in a special economic zone that want to permit work-from-home for employees will have to formulate a scheme and take approval from development commissioners concerned.
  • In July, the government allowed WFH for a maximum period of one year in a special economic zone (SEZ) unit.
  • The facility can be extended to 50 per cent of total employees.

6. Union government appoints Piyush Goyal NATGRID CEO

  • Piyush Goyal, a 1994 batch IAS officer of Nagaland cadre, has been appointed as the new NATGRID CEO by the Union government as it issued an order on Wednesday for posting 26 other officers to the rank of additional secretary.
  • Goyal is currently serving as an additional secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs.
  • NATGRID came into existence after the 2008 Mumbai attacks.
  • Details about NATGIRD:
    • The National Intelligence Grid or NATGRID is the integrated intelligence master database structure for counter-terrorism purpose connecting databases of various core security agencies under Government of India
    • It collects comprehensive patterns of intelligence that can be readily accessed by intelligence agencies.

7. DoT invites participation in demand study for 5G private networks

  • The Department of Telecom plans to undertake demand studies for directly giving 5G spectrum to enterprises willing to set up Captive Non-Public Networks (CNPN).
  • Enterprises with a net worth of more than 100 crores are invited to participate in this exercise.
  • Qualified and keen enterprises are required to submit the details such as ownership, net worth, proposed locations etc.
  • The CNPN licence cannot be used for commercial telecommunications.

8. Under the aegis of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, Ministry of Culture organized “Badhe Chalo” programme

  • The pan India programme Badhe Chalo culminated with a grand finale at the Talkatora Stadium today after 7 days of power packed performances across 70 cities in India.
  • Under the aegis of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, the Ministry of Culture organized “Badhe Chalo” from 5th of August 2022.

9. Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal inaugurates the exhibition, ‘Saga of Freedom – Known and Lesser-Known Struggles’

  • Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal, Minister of State for Culture and Parliamentary Affairs inaugurated an exhibition – ‘Saga of Freedom: Known & Lesser-known Struggle’ in New Delhi today.
  • The exhibition is organized by the National Archives of India.
  • This exhibition is based on original government documents, cartographic records, newspapers, private papers, and contemporary photographs.

10. “Cyber Pravah” Newsletter of Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) of Ministry of Home Affairs released

  • The Special Secretary (Internal Security) released “Cyber Pravah” Newsletter of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) under the Cyber and Information Security Division (CIS) of the MHA.
  • I4C is also spreading mass awareness through various social media handles in the name of ‘CyberDost’ by providing cyber safety tips at frequent intervals for the public.
  • The I4C was set up under the CIS Division in 2018.

11. Union Minister for Social Justice & Empowerment Dr. Virendra Kumar launched “SMILE-75 Initiative”.

  • In the spirit of Azadika Amrit Mahotsav, the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India, has identified 75 Municipal Corporations to implement comprehensive rehabilitation of persons engaged in the act of begging under “SMILE: Support for Marginalised Individuals for Livelihood and Enterprise”named as “SMILE-75 Initiative”.
  • Union Minister for Social Justice & Empowerment (MoSJE) allocated a total budget of Rs.100 crore for the SMILE project till 2025-26.

12. Youth employment deteriorated in India: ILO report

  • India experienced severe working-hour and employment losses in 2020 and 2021, and Indian youth employment deteriorated in 2021 compared to 2020, according to the Global Employment Trends for Youth 2022 report released by the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

    • The Office employs 2,700 officials from over 150 nations at its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

13. More than 7% Indians owned cryptocurrency in 2021: UNCTAD

  • Over 7% of Indians owned digital currency in the form of cryptocurrency in 2021, the United Nations trade and development body UNCTAD revealed.
  • UNCTAD highlighted that the use of cryptocurrencies globally, including the developing countries, has increased exponentially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Ukraine topped the list with 12.7% of its population holding such currencies.
  • Stablecoins are cryptocurrencies that attempt to peg their market value to external asset
