1. Global Hand washing Day 15 OCtober

  • Global Hand washing Day is an international hand washing promotion campaign.
  • The day is observed to motivate and mobilise people around the world to improve their hand washing habits.
  • The very first Global Handwashing Day was held in 2008.
  • Themes:
    • 2021 – Our Future Is at Hand – Let’s Move Forward Together.
    • 2020 (during COVID – 19 pandemic) – Hand Hygiene for All.

2. Living Planet Report 2022: 69% drop in wildlife population globally in 50 years

  • There has been a 69 per cent decline in the wildlife populations of mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles and fish, across the globe in the last 50 years, according to the latest Living Planet Report by World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
  • The highest decline (94 percent) was in the Latin America and the Caribbean region, the report showed.

3. The pace of India’s national highway construction slows to 19.44 kms per day in April-September

  • “The ministry has constructed 3,559 KMs of National Highways up to September in 2022-23 as compared to 3,824 KMs constructed up to September in 2021-22,” the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said in its monthly summary for the Cabinet for September 2022.
  • India has awarded 4,092 kms of highway projects during April-September this year.

4. RBI asks banks to stop building positions in offshore market

  • The central bank’s move in 2020 came after studies showed that the foreign bank-dominated non-deliverable forward (NDF) market, over which the RBI had little influence, fuelled volatility and often led the spot rupee lower in times of stress.
  • Letting Indian banks trade in the segment would give RBI more control.
  • What is NDF?
    • A non-deliverable forward (NDF) is a cash-settled, and usually short-term, forward contract.
    • The notional amount is never exchanged, and for that reason it’s called “non-deliverable.”

5. RBI and SEBI Issue Standard Operating Procedure for Inter-operable Regulatory Sandbox (IoRS)

  • Financial products or service providers whose business models fall within the remit of more than 1 financial sector regulator such as RBI, SEBI, IRDAI (Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India), PFRDA (Pension Fund Regulatory & Development Authority) and IFSCA (International Financial Services Centres Authority) will be considered for the testing under IoRS.
  • RBI launched the final framework for Regulatory Sandbox in 2019.

6. India finish fifth with one gold, one silver & two bronze medals at the ISSF Championship Shotgun 2022

  • At the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Championship Shotgun, India finished fifth with one gold, one silver and two bronze medals in Osijek, Croatia.
  • Shotgun powerhouses Italy, Great Britain and USA, took the top three spots.
  • Men’s Skeet Team finished ninth among 22 teams and the Women’s Skeet Team finished Tenth.

7. Times Higher Education Rankings 2023: IISc tops among 10 Indian Universities

  • In Times Higher Education Rankings 2023, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore has secured the top place among the Indian universities.

  • IISc has been placed under the 251-300 bracket.

8. JSW Steel joints United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) initiative

  • JSW Steel is the fifth Indian company in the “Industrial Mining and Manufacturing” category to join the UN Global Compact initiative.
  • JSW Steel, the flagship company of the diversified $22 billion JSW Group, on October 11 announced that it has joined as the newest participant of the UNGC network – the world’s largest voluntary corporate sustainability initiative.

9. 81st session of Indian Road Congress held in Lucknow from Oct 8 – 11 after 11 years

  • Union Minister of Road Transport and highways Nitin Gadkari along with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath jointly inaugurated the 81st annual session of the Indian roads Congress in Lucknow.
  • On the occasion, he made the announcement that road projects worth eight thousand crore rupees have been approved for Uttar Pradesh including 13 Road Over Bridges.

    • The Indian Roads Congress is the apex body of highway engineers and the IRC was set up in December 1934, by the Government of India.
    • The objective of the body was road development in India and now the body’s focus is on people and services, including road safety.

10. Services retain Raja Bhalindra Singh Trophy; Sajan Prakash and Hashika Ramachandra named Best Athletes

  • The 36th National Games came to a poignant end here at the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Indoor Stadium with Services Sports Control Board, Kerala’s Sajan Prakash and Karnataka’s Hashika Ramchandra walking away with the top honours.

  • Top Indian discus thrower Kamalpreet Kaur was banned for three year for using prohibited substance Stanozolol, the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) has announced.

12. Cabinet extends Rs 22,000 crore as one time grant to oil PSUs to cover losses in domestic LPG

  • The Cabinet has also approved 22,000 crore rupees as one time grant to Public Sector Undertakings, Oil Marketing Companies for losses in Domestic LPG.
  • This will help them to continue their commitment to the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan, ensuring unhindered domestic LPG supplies.

13. INS Tarkash reaches Port Elizabeth in South Africa to participate in 7th edition of IBSAMAR

  • INS Tarkash reached Port Grequhrea, also known as Port Elizabeth in South Africa to participate in the seventh edition of IBSAMAR, a joint multinational maritime exercise among Indian, Brazilian and South African Navies.
  • The harbour phase of IBSAMAR VII includes professional exchanges such as damage control and fire-fighting drills, and interaction among special forces.

  • The Programme has been initiated by FIFA in Odisha in partnership with the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology & Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences.
