1. After Raising $33.5 mn Zomato-Backed Shiprocket Becomes India’s 106th Unicorn

  • Zomato-backed SaaS-based logistics startup Shiprocket has become the latest entrant to the country’s unicorn club.
  • Shiprocket raised $33.5 Mn in a Series E2 round fresh funding round led by Light Rock India.
  • Shiprocket is valued at $1.2 Bn in the latest funding round, joining Delhivery, Xpressbees, and BlackBuck in the list of logistics startups to turn unicorn.

2. India home to 18 of 20 cities with most severe increase in PM 2.5 pollution, Delhi and Kolkata worst hit

  • In 2019, Delhi recorded an annual average PM2.5 concentration of 110 microgram per cubic metre, the highest among the most-populous cities in the world, followed by Kolkata (84 microgram per cubic metre), said the report “Air Quality and Health in Cities” by the State of Global Air Initiative.
  • Beijing in China had the highest PM2.5-attributable death rate of 124 in 2019.
  • Delhi is situated on the banks of River Yamuna and Kolkata on the banks of River Hooghly.

3. Govt data on UDAN scheme: 452 new routed started under it

  • The Ministry of Civil Aviation’s flagship program Regional Connectivity Scheme UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) has completed 5 years of success since the launch of its first flight by the Prime Minister on 27th April 2017.
  • The scheme was initiated on 21st October 2016.
  • With 425 new routes initiated under the scheme, UDAN has provided air connectivity to more than 29 States/ UTs.

4. HDFC Bank launched a social media campaign called ‘Vigil Aunty’ to encourage safe banking habits

  • HDFC Bank has announced the launch of a new campaign titled ‘Vigil Aunty’.
  • It aims to encourage people across the country to practise safe banking habits.
  • Anuradha (Anu) Menon will be the protagonist of this campaign.
  • Through a series of videos, reels, chat shows, Menon, as Vigil Aunty, will be creating awareness on safe banking do’s and don’ts.
  • This will complement the bank’s ‘Mooh Bandh Rakho’ campaign.

5. Kushvinder Vohra Member (WP&P WING), CWC nominated as President of Indian Water Resources Society

  • Kushvinder Vohra, Member (Water Planning & Projects), Central Water Commission & Ex-Officio Additional Secretary to Government of India, was nominated as President of Indian Water Resources Society (IWRS) for a period of 2023-2025.

6. AIADMK’s first MP Maya Thevar passes away at the age of 87

  • Former Member of Parliament and senior All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) politician K. Maya Thevar passed away due to age-related illness at his residence in Chinnalapatti near Dindigul.
  • He was 87.
  • The first MP of the AIADMK, Mr. Maya Thevar was born on October 15, 1934, at T. Uchapatti near Usilampatti in Madurai district.
  • AIADMK is a regional political party in the state of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry UT.

8. Uzbekistan will host the Chess Olympiad 2026

  • Uzbekistan will host the Chess Olympiad 2026, the International Chess Federation (FIDE), announced in a tweet.
  • After the inspection visit, the International Chess Federation (FIDE) will choose the venue of the 2026 World Chess Olympiad in Uzbekistan from two proposals — Tashkent or Samarkand.
  • Uzbekistan won the gold medal in the open event at 44th Chennai Chess Olympiad.

11. SBI launches its first dedicated branch for start-ups in Bengaluru

  • State Bank of India announced the launch of its first “state-of-the-art” dedicated branch for startups in the country in Bengaluru, to facilitate and support them.
  • The branch was launched by SBI Chairman Dinesh Khara.
  • The branch would also be catering to all the requirements of the private equity (PE) and venture capital (VC) funds and the Alternative Investment Fund (AIF)

13. Asia’s oldest football tournament – Durand Cup begins

  • Asia’s oldest football tournament- Durand Cup has kicked off its 131st edition in Kolkata.
  • Twenty teams, including all 11 ISL clubs, five from I-League and four from the armed forces, spread over four groups will play in the 47-game competition which will for the first time since it started in 1888.

    • It is an annual domestic football competition in India which was first held in 1888 in Shimla.

16. Centre appoints Rajkiran Rai as NaBFID managing director for nearly 5 years

  • The Centre and the board of National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development (NaBFID) has appointed Rajkiran Rai G as its managing director (MD) for nearly five years.
  • The board of NaBFID approved Rai’s appointment on July 30 based on clearance by the RBI, centre and the DFI’s nomination and remuneration committee.

17. IRDAI launches hackathon, invites innovative tech solutions for insurance sector

  • Insurance regulator IRDAI has invited entities to develop technology-driven innovative solutions for automated death claim settlement, curtail miss-selling, and other areas of the insurance ecosystem, with an aim to protect the interest of policyholders, As part of its first hackathon – Bima Manthan 2022 – with the theme ‘Innovation in Insurance’.

18. Kolkata to host 23rd edition of India International Seafood Show in February 2023
