1. Tesla CEO Elon Musk unveils the humanoid robot ‘Optimus’

  • Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed a prototype of a humanoid robot “Optimus” robot that shares some AI software and sensors with its cars’ Autopilot driver assistance features.
  • It contains a 2.3kWh battery pack, runs on a Tesla SoC, and has Wi-Fi and LTE connectivity.
  • Musk predicted it could hit a price of “probably less than $20,000”.

2. Centre extends AFSPA in Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh for 6 more months

  • The central government has extended for another six months the application of the disturbed area under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, (AFSPA) in 12 districts of Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh.
  • It has also been extended in certain parts of five other districts of the two northeastern states to facilitate the armed forces to continue the anti-insurgency operations.

3. India abstains on UNSC resolution condemning Russian annexation of Ukrainian regions

  • The US and Albania tabled a draft resolution at the UN Security Council resolution (UNSC) condemning Russia’s referenda and annexation of four Ukrainian territories.
  • The UN Security Council voted on the resolution.
  • Since Russia vetoed the resolution, it did not get adopted.
  • Among the 15 nations of the Council, 10 voted in favour of the resolution, and four India, China, Gabon, and Brazil abstained.

4. Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal announces 15-point Winter Action Plan to combat air pollution

  • Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced a 15-point Winter Action Plan to curb air pollution in the national capital.
  • It includes the introduction of an electric vehicle policy in 2020 and 24-hour electricity supply; air-pollution level has declined in the last four years.
  • It will also install anti-smog guns and mobile anti-smog guns to curb pollution.

5. Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (2016=100) – August 2022

  • The All-India CPI-IW for August, 2022 increased by 0.3 points and stood at 130.2 (one hundred thirty point two).
  • The Labour Bureau has been compiling the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for Industrial Workers every month on the basis of retail prices collected from 317 markets spread over 88 industrially important centres in the country.
  • What is CPI?
    • CPI designed to measure retail prices of selected goods and services that households purchase for the purpose of consumption.

6. 36th National Games, Haryana’s Anish wins gold medal in Men’s Rapid Fire Pistol event

  • In the 36th National Games, Anish of Haryana won the gold medal in the Men’s Rapid Fire Pistol event at Ahmedabad in Gujarat.
  • Ankur Goyal of Uttarakhand and Gurmeet of Punjab won silver and bronze, respectively.

    • The game comprises various disciplines in which athletes from the different states of India participate against each other.

7. RBI names 16 NBFCs in the upper layer list under its scale-based regulation

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced the list of non-banking finance companies (NBFCs) in the upper layer under its scale-based regulation.
  • NBFC-UL (upper layer non-banking finance companies) list are: LIC Housing Finance, Bajaj Finance, Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services, Shriram Transport, Tata Sons, L&T Finance, Indiabulls Housing Finance, Piramal Capital & Housing Finance, Cholamandalam Investment and Finance Co., Shanghvi Finance Pvt. Ltd, Muthoot Finance, PNB Housing Finance, Tata Capital Financial Services, Aditya Birla Finance, HDB Financial Services and Bajaj Housing Finance.
  • Out of the total NBFCs listed by the central bank, 10 are non-deposit taking NBFCs, five are deposit taking non-banks while Tata Sons is a core investment company.

8. PM Modi inaugurates or lay foundation stones for Rs 29,000-cr projects during Gujarat tour

  • PM has dedicated various development projects worth over ₹7200 crores in Ambaji, Gujarat.
  • He laid the foundation stone of over 45,000 houses built under PM Awas Yojana.
  • He also laid the foundation stone of Taranga Hill – Ambaji – Abu Road New Broad-Gauge Line and the development of pilgrimage facilities at Ambaji temple under PRASAD scheme.

  • N S Rajan, Director of August One Partners LLP was unanimously elected as Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI)’s Chairman of the Board of Governors.
  • Saugata Gupta, Managing Director & CEO, Marico Limited, was elected Vice-Chairman.

    • It was established in 1985.

10. ICCR collaborates with Google for global promotion of Sanskrit

  • The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) announced a collaboration with Google to promote Sanskrit.
  • Google has received 100,000 sentence pairs from ICCR as part of the project’s pilot phase in order to form its AI/ML models.
  • The Sanskrit team from the University of Delhi, comprising academics, students and teachers, was led by professor Amarjiva Lochan.

  • The Centre has appointed former Air Chief Marshal (Retd) Rakesh Kumar Singh Bhadauria as Chief Nodal Officer for the UPDIC project.
  • The Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor (UPDIC) is a project under the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA).
  • The project is expected to reduce foreign dependency of the Indian aerospace and defence sector.

12. Centre extends free ration under PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana for next 3 months

  • The Central government announced an extension of the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana for another three months until December 2022.
  • Under this scheme, 5 kg ration per person is given to beneficiaries.
  • This is in addition to the ration given under the public distribution system.
  • Financial implication for the Central government has been about Rs.3.45 Lakh Crore.

13. Women’s rights activist Srishti Bakshi wins ‘Changemaker’ award at UN SDG Action Awards

  • A women’s rights activist from India, who travelled 3,800km through the length of the country in less than a year to raise awareness on gender-based violence and inequality, has won a prestigious honour at the UN SDG Action Awards.

14. Minister of State for Culture Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal to attend UNESCO-MONDIACULT 2022 World Conference in Mexico

  • The UNESCO World Conference on Cultural Policies and Sustainable Development – MONDIACULT 2022 was convened by UNESCO forty years after the first Mondiacult world conference on cultural policies held in Mexico city in 1982.

15. Active credit cards drop 2.3 million in August over new RBI norms

  • After the Reserve Bank of India rule mandating credit card operators to deactivate cards that are inactive for 365 days came into effect, the number of credit cards in force declined to about 78 million in August 2022.
  • While SBI Cards’ market share based on the number of cards in force increased to 19.2% in August 2022, HDFC Bank and Axis Bank saw their market share fall.

16. UP Govt approves MSME Promotion Policy 2022 and UP Bioenergy Policy 2022

  • Uttar Pradesh cabinet approved a Micro Small Medium Enterprises (MSME) Promotion Policy 2022 and Uttar Pradesh Bioenergy Policy 2022 to help setting up of MSMEs and bioenergy projects.
  • The state cabinet also approved a proposal to reorganize the State Planning Commission as the State Transformation Commission (STC) on the pattern of the Niti Aayog.

17. American Express ties up with Nasscom to empower women with digital skills
