3. Centre to start Rs 500 Cr accelerator programme to enhance agri startups initiatives

  • In the Agri Startup Conference organised during PM Kisan Samman Sammelan at Pusa Mela Ground, Delhi, the agriculture minister informed that A Rs. 500 crore accelerator programme for taking forward and popularising the successful initiatives of agri startups will be started.

4. Thamban Meloth appointed as director of Goa-based National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR)

  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the proposal for the appointment of Dr. Thamban Meloth, Scientist G’, NCPOR to the post of Director, National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), Goa.
  • On behalf of the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), NCPOR has been designated as the nodal agency to deal with various facets of the IODP program in India.

10. Hyderabad-based CCMB part of world’s largest genomic study

  • The Hyderabad-based Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) has become part of the world’s largest and most diverse genomic study covering 54 lakh individuals.
  • It identified 12 thousand 222 places in the human genome that are associated with human height.
  • The study ‘A saturated map of common genetic variants associated with human height’ was published in Nature Journal.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi kickstarted the distribution of PMJAY-MA Yojana Ayushman cards in Gujarat via video conferencing on 17 October.
  • The Prime Minister launched the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana in 2018 – the largest health insurance scheme in the world providing coverage of up to Rs. 5 lakh per family per year for primary, secondary and tertiary care.

14. India lifted 415 million out of poverty in 15 years, says United Nations (UN)

  • The UNDP report noted that the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on poverty in India cannot be fully assessed because 71% of the data from the 2019-2021 ‘Demographic and Health Survey’ for the country were collected before the pandemic.
  • The incidence of poverty fell from 36.6% in 2015-2016 to 21.2% in 2019-2021 in rural areas and from 9.0% to 5.5% in urban areas.
