1. Defence Ministry approves setting up of ‘BRO Cafes’ at 75 border locations across 12 states/UTs

  • The Ministry of Defence approved setting up of wayside amenities under the brand of ‘BRO Cafes’ at 75 locations on different sections of roads with BRO across 12 states and Union territories.
  • These are intended to provide basic amenities and comfort to tourists and lead to boosting of economic activities in border areas, besides generating employment for local people.

2. 38th edition of India–Indonesia Coordinated Patrol

  • The navies of India and Indonesia on June 13 began an 11-day coordinated patrol in the Andaman Sea and Malacca Strait.
  • The 38th edition of the exercise IND-INDO CORPAT, conducted for the first time after the COVID-19 pandemic, will take place till June 24.
  • The two navies have been carrying out CORPAT along their International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) since 2002.
  • The patrol commenced on June 13 with the arrival of KRI Cut Nyak Dien at Port Blair.

3. India’s GSAT-24 satellite launched, entire capacity leased to Tata Play

  • Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully launched communication satellite GSAT-24 from Kourou in French Guiana.
  • GSAT-24, built by ISRO for NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), was launched by French company Arianespace.
  • GSAT-24 is a 24-Ku band communication satellite weighing 4180 kg with pan-India coverage for meeting DTH application needs.
  • Entire capacity on board leased to Tata Play.

4. World Bank approves project to promote rain-fed farming in Uttarakhand

  • The World Bank has approved a project worth ₹1,000 crore for taking rain-fed farming to new heights in the hilly regions of Uttarakhand.
  • The project named Uttarakhand Climate Responsive Rain-fed Farming Project will be implemented by the watershed department.
  • The project is aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions for funding by the World Bank.

5. Sh. Basavaraj Bommai inaugurates Ikea’s store in Bengaluru, urges management to give more jobs to locals

  • Karnataka’s Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai opened Swedish furniture and home furnishing retailer Ikea’s large outlet at Nagasandra on the Pune expressway.
  • The Ikea store in Bengaluru is 500,000 sq.ft in area and the company hopes to attract about seven million visitors a year.
  • It has employed about 1000 direct workers.

6. Max Life, Policybazaar launch life insurance savings plan

  • Max Life and Policybazaar have come together to launch ‘Max Life Smart Fixed-return Digital Plan’, a non-linked, non-participating, individual life insurance savings plan for Millennials.
  • It helps meet short-term financial goals with a minimum policy tenure of five years.
  • Offers guaranteed tax-free returns up to 6.14% along with life cover protection.

7. Government dept to collaborate with SBI to create integrated pension portal

  • During the two-day bankers’ awareness programme in Udaipur, Rajasthan it was decided that immediate efforts are needed for the creation of an integrated pension portal by linking the existing portals of Centre’s Department of Pension & Pensioners’ Welfare (DoPPW) and the SBI to provide seamless services to pensioners.

8. India’s first ‘Balika Panchayat’ formed in five villages of Gujarat

  • India’s first-ever girl Panchayat, “Balika Panchayat” was started in 5 villages of Gujarat’s Kutch district.
  • It aims to promote the social and political development of the girls and ensure their active participation of girls in politics.
  • This is a unique initiative of the Women and Child Development Welfare department of Gujarat under the ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ campaign.
  • “Balika Panchayat” is managed by people in the 11-21 age group.

9. Mongolia’s Khuvsgul lake added to UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves

  • Mongolia’s Khuvsgul Lake National Park has been added to the World Network of Biosphere Reserves of UNESCO.
  • Khuvsgul Lake is located in the northern Mongolian province of Khuvsgul near the Russian border, holding nearly 70 percent of Mongolia’s fresh water, or 0.4 per cent of the world’s total.

10. Asian games double gold medallist and olympian Hari Chand dies aged 69

  • Long-distance runner Hari Chand, who won two gold medals at the 1978 Bangkok Asian Games, passed away at his native village Ghorewaha in Hoshiarpur district, Punjab.
  • He won a gold medal at the 1975 Asian Championship in 10,000 metre and a bronze medal in 5,000 metre.
  • Later, he won two gold medals at the 1978 Asian Games in Bangkok in the 5000 metre and 10,000 metre events.
  • He also participated in two Olympic Games in 1976 and 1980.

11. SEBI appoints Prof. V Ravi Anshuman to head 16-member panel

  • SEBI has recently reconstituted its research advisory committee, which is in charge of promotion, development and maintenance of databases necessary for capital market regulation research.
  • This 16-member panel will be headed by Professor V. Ravi Anshuman, Chairperson and faculty, Finance & Accounting, IIM Bangalore.

12. LIC introduces ‘Dhan Sanchay’ savings life insurance plan

  • Dhan Sanchay plan is a non-linked, non-participating, individual, savings life insurance plan that offers a combination of protection and savings.
  • The plan is available for a term of minimum 5 years to maximum 15 years.
  • It provides level income benefit, increasing income benefit, single premium level income benefit and single benefit.

13. W repot: GC India ranks fourth in global gold recycling; recycled 75 tonnes in 2021

  • India has emerged as the 4th largest recycler in the world and the country will recycle 75 tonnes in 2021, according to a World Gold Council (WGC) report.
  • According to the WGC report titled ‘Gold refining and recycling’, China topped the global gold recycling chart as it recycled 168 tonnes of the yellow metal, followed by Italy in the second position with 80 tonnes.
  • The US was at the third rank with 78 tonnes recycled in 2021.

14. IIT-M, army partner to set up 5G testbed at Indore military college

  • Army Training Command (ARTRAC) is partnering with IIT-Madras to set up a 5G testbed at Military College of Telecommunication in Indore’s Mhow to help the army to utilise 5G technology for its operational use, especially along the international borders.

15. PM’s Awards for Outstanding Contribution towards the Development and Promotion of Yoga for the Year 2021

  • Bhikkhu Sanghasena from Ladakh, Marcus Vinicius Rojo Rodrigues from Brazil and two organisations, The Divine Life Society from Uttarakhand and the British Wheel of Yoga from the United Kingdom have been chosen for the award.
  • Ayush Ministry said, the winners will be felicitated with a trophy, certificate and cash award of 25 lakh rupees.

16. Lisa Sthalekar appointed first woman president of Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations

  • Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA) announced former Australian cricketer Lisa Sthalekar as its President at the FICA Executive Committee meeting held in Nyon, Switzerland, making her the first woman’s cricketer to hold the position.
  • Lisa Sthalekar succeeds Vikram Solanki as FICA President.

17. R Kavita Rao appointed as director of NIPFP

  • Eminent economist R Kavita Rao has taken charge as the director of National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP) for a five-year term.
  • NIPFP founded in 1976 is a centre for research in public economics and policies.
  • Although the institute receives an annual grant from the Ministry of Finance, and various state governments, it is an autonomous institution.
  • Rao has replaced Pinaki Chakraborty.

18. SEBI forms advisory panel to hybrid securities to enable larger retail play

  • SEBI has set up an advisory committee on hybrid securities, which will make recommendations for giving a fillip to the growth of such instruments, including measures focusing on ease of issuance and attracting domestic and global capital.
  • The 20-member committee will be chaired by K V Kamath, Chairperson of National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development.
  • REITs and InvITs are classified as hybrid securities and are relatively new in India.

19. DBS Bank India acquires 9.9% stake in Svakarma Finance

  • DBS Bank India Ltd (DBIL) has acquired a 9.9 per cent stake in Svakarma Finance, a non-banking finance company, to deliver financial solutions to micro enterprises through a combination of direct lending and co-lending.
  • DBIL is among the first foreign banks in India to start operating as a wholly owned, locally incorporated subsidiary.
  • DBIL is a subsidiary of Singapore-based DBS and acquired LVB in FY21.
