1. National Unity Day 31 October 2022

  • National Unity Day is celebrated on 31 October every year and it also marks the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the year 2014 had declared that 31 October will be celebrated as National Unity Day in remembrance of Sardar Patel.
  • About Sardar Patel:
    • Sardar Patel was a member of the Indian National Congress and he played an important role in the Independence struggle of the country.
    • Patel was the first Deputy Prime Minister of India and the first Home Minister of India.
    • He is known for his strategies which helped in the peaceful integration of the princely states into the Indian Union and the political unification of India.

2. IAF, French Air and Space Force(FASF) carry out bilateral exercise Garuda-VII at Air Force Station Jodhpur

  • Indian Air Force (IAF) and French Air and Space Force (FASF) are participating in a bilateral exercise, named Garuda VIl, from 26 October to 12 November 2022 at Air Force Station Jodhpur.
  • 1st, 3rd and 5th editions were conducted in India in 2003, 2006 and 2014 at Air Force Stations Gwalior, Kalaikunda and Jodhpur respectively.
  • The 2nd, 4th and 6th editions were conducted in France in 2005, 2010 and 2019.

3. BPCL recognised as country’s most sustainable oil & gas company

  • Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) a Maharatna and Fortune Global 500 Company has achieved the No.1 rank for 3rd time in the Indian oil and gas sector for its sustainability performance in the 2022 edition of the S&P Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) rankings.
  • This is the 3rd consecutive year that BPCL is at the top of the DJSI CSA rankings.

4. India defeats Australia to win third Sultan of Johor Cup

  • India defeated Australia to win Sultan of Johor Cup 2022 in a shootout 5-4 after a 1-1 draw.
  • This is the third time India has won the Sultan of Johor Cup.
  • The Indians have won the age group tournament twice — 2013 and 2014 — and finished second best four times in 2012, 2015, 2018 and the last edition of the event in 2019.

5. Windergy 2023 to be held in Chennai in October next year

  • The 5th edition of India’s only comprehensive International Trade Fair and Conference, Windergy India 2023 will be held from 4th October to 6th October 2023 in Chennai.
  • It is organised by Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association (IWTMA) and PDA Ventures Pvt Ltd.

6. RBI revokes authorisation certificate of Chennai-based GI Technology

  • The Reserve Bank of India, in the exercise of the powers conferred on it under Section 8 of the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007, has revoked the Certificate of Authorisation (CoA) of the Chennai-based GI Technology Private Limited over governance concerns in the company.
  • According to this act after revoking of CoA GI Technology cannot transact the business of issuance and operation of prepaid payment instruments.

7. Mawmluh Cave in Meghalaya first Indian Geoheritage Site recognised by UNESCO

  • Mawmluh Caves located in the East Khasi Hills district has made it to the first 100 geological heritage sites listed under International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) by UNESCO.
  • The first 100 sites were chosen from 56 countries.
  • It is the fourth longest cave (7.2 km) in the Indian subcontinent and is referred to locally as Krem Mawmluh.
  • Another significant feature of the cave is the pool inside the cave that is formed from five different rivers that pass through the cave.

8. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan Inaugurates India’s Second National Model Vedic School in Odisha’s Puri

  • Dharmendra Pradhan inaugurated the country’s second Rashtriya Adarsh Veda Vidyalaya in Puri, with the main agenda of spreading knowledge of the Vedas among people.
  • The RAVV or the National Model Vedic School has come up on the campus of the Central Sanskrit University.
  • Maharishi Sandipani Rashtriya Ved Vidya Pratishthan is the first such school in Madhya Pradesh.

9. Saudi Arabia wins bid to host 2029 Asian Winter Games at NEOM

  • Saudi Arabia has won a bid to host the 2029 Asian Winter Games at a planned mountain resort in the Gulf Arab state’s $500 billion flagship NEOM project.
  • NEOM is Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s most ambitious project under the kingdom’s Vision 2030 development plan to reduce reliance on oil and transform the economy, including by developing sports.
  • NEOM is a 26,500-square-km high-tech development on the Red Sea.

10. Akanksha Vyavahare creates three new national records at Khelo India weightlifting meet

  • Maharashtra-based weightlifter Akanksha Vyavahare created three new national records in the 40 kg weight category at the Khelo India National Ranking Women’s Weightlifting tournament held in Ghaziabad, Noida.
  • Akanksha bettered her existing Snatch national record, by lifting 60kg.
  • She recorded 71 kg in the Clean & Jerk, and in the process, registered a total lift of 131 kg.

11. SAIL inks pact with AAI to facilitate commercial operations at Rourkela airport under UDAN scheme

  • Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and the Airport Authority of India (AAI) signed an Operation and Management agreement in New Delhi to facilitate commercial operations from Rourkela in Odisha.
  • SAIL, in 2018, had signed a MoU with AAI for the use of its own airport, under the UDAN scheme, for the operation of commercial flights.
  • AAI, on behalf of SAIL-Rourkela Steel Plant, will operate and manage the airport.

12. 21.4 lakh new TB cases reported in India in 2021; 18% higher than previous year: Report of WHO

  • A total of 21.4 lakh TB cases were notified in India in 2021 – 18 per cent higher than 2020 – with over 22 crore people screened for the disease across the country for early detection and treatment, according to the WHO’S Global TB report.
  • These figures also place India at the 36th position in terms of incidence rates (from largest to smallest incidence numbers), it said.
  • India’s TB incidence for the year 2021 is 210 per 100,000 population.

13. Singapore-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise ‘Simbex’ – 2022

  • The Indian Navy is hosting the 29th edition of the Singapore-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise (SIMBEX) from 26 to 30 October, 2022 at Visakhapatnam.
  • SIMBEX-2022 is being conducted in two phases – (i) Harbour Phase at Visakhapatnam from 26 to 27 October 2022 followed by (ii) the Sea Phase in Bay of Bengal from 28 to 30 October 2022.
  • SIMBEX series of exercises began in 1994 and were initially known as Exercise Lion King.

14. Bharat Electronics signs pact with Meslova for developing products, services in artificial intelligence/machine learning

  • Navratna Defence PSU Bharat Electronics (BEL) has signed an agreement with Hyderabad-headquartered Meslova Systems, for cooperation in the areas of artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI&ML) for air defence (AD) systems/platforms for the Armed Forces.

15. China launches a COVID-19 vaccine inhaled through the mouth

  • The vaccine, a mist that is sucked in through the mouth, is being offered for free as a booster dose for previously vaccinated individuals.
  • The Chinese city of Shanghai has started administering this inhalable COVID-19 vaccine in what appears to be a world first.
  • It was developed by Chinese biopharmaceutical company Cansino Biologics Inc.

16. India is likely to see the biggest jump in energy demand globally, says IEA in its World Energy Outlook report

  • India is likely to see the world’s biggest rise in energy demand this decade, with demand climbing 3% annually due to urbanisation and industrialisation according to the report of the International Energy Agency (IEA).
  • While the push for renewable energy will see it meeting as much as 60 per cent of the growth in demand for power, coal will continue to meet a third of overall energy demand by 2030 and another quarter will be met by oil.
