1. JNU Vice Chancellor Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar appointed as next University Grants Commission chairperson
- Jawaharlal Nehru University Vice Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar was appointed as the chairperson of the University Grants Commission, or UGC.
- The Ministry of Education said that Kumar will retain the post for five years or till he becomes 65, whichever is earlier.
- The post of the UGC chairperson had been vacant after Professor DP Singh resigned on December 7 after he turned 65.

2. Swachhta Saarthi Fellowship 2022 announced by Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser
- The Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India under its “Waste to Wealth” Mission has announced the “Swachhta Saarthi Fellowship 2022”.
- The aim of the mission is to empower young innovators who are engaged in community work of waste management as Swachhta Saarthis and implement actions to reduce waste for a greener planet.
- It is one of the nine national missions of the Prime Minister’s PM-STIAC scheme
3. South African scientists copy Moderna’s COVID vaccine
- Scientists in South Africa have produced a copy of the Moderna Covid vaccine, raising the prospect of wider access to jabs in poorer parts of the world.
- Researchers in Cape Town backed by the World Health Organization (WHO) hope to begin human trials in November.
- They have used publicly available information to produce the mRNA vaccine.

- It is a type of vaccine that uses a copy of a molecule called messenger RNA (mRNA) to produce an immune response.

4. First BJP MP in Lok Sabha, Chandupatla Janga Reddy, passes away
- Chandupatla Janga Reddy, an iconic leader in BJP who had defeated Former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao from Hanamkonda Lok Sabha constituency in 1984 general elections, has passed away.
- His election to the parliament in the 1984 elections, in which he was one among the only two members of parliament from BJP back then.
5. ISRO to launch Chandrayan-3 in August this year
- Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will make its third venture to the Moon through the Chandrayaan-3 mission in August this year.
- This year is expected to be quite busy for ISRO as major projects such as Gaganyaan and Aditya solar mission are also in the pipeline.
- ISRO will conduct 19 missions till December this year.

- Indian Classical music lovers pay homage to legendary Singer Pt Bhim Sen Joshi on his centenary birth anniversary on Friday.
- He was born on 4th February 1922 at Gadag in Dharwad.
- He was honoured with the Padma Shri (1972), Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Hindustani vocal music (1975), Padma Bhushan (1985)
7. RBI cancels licence of Maharashtra-based Independence Co-operative Bank
- The Reserve Bank of India cancelled the licence of Nashik-based Independence Co-operative Bank Ltd and began the process for winding it up following the erosion of the bank’s capital.
8. LIC nominates MK Gupta on IDBI Bank board
- Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has nominated Mukesh Kumar Gupta, retired Managing Director of LIC, on the Board of IDBI Bank.
- Gupta’s appointment comes in the wake of Rajesh Kandwal ceasing to be LIC Nominee Director with effect from February 2, 2022.

9. New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell wins ICC’s ‘Spirit of Cricket’ award
- New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell is the recipient of the ICC ‘Spirit of Cricket’ award for 2021 due to his sportsmanlike gesture in the T20 World Cup semi-final against England in Abu Dhabi.
- Mitchell is the fourth New Zealand player to win the award, following the footsteps of Daniel Vettori, Brendon McCullum and Kane Williamson.

13. 2022 Beijing Olympics: Skier Arif Khan, only Indian athlete at winter games
- Alpine skier Arif Khan is the first from Kashmir and the only Indian to qualify for the 2022 Winter Olympics being held in Beijing.
- He is also the first Indian to qualify for two different events of Winter Olympics and will be slalom and giant slalom alpine skiing in Beijing.
