1. Alkesh Kumar Sharma assumes charge as new Secretary for Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology

  • Alkesh Kumar Sharma assumed charge as Secretary, Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY).
  • He is an Indian Administrative Services Officer of 1990 batch, from Kerala cadre.
  • He earlier served as Additional Secretary and Secretary in the Cabinet Secretariat.
  • Ashwini Vaishnaw : Minister of Railways, Communications and Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY).

2. PM to address the inaugural session of ‘JITO Connect 2022’

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the inaugural session of Jain International Trade Organisation’s ‘JITO Connect 2022’ on 6th May 2022.
  • Jain International Trade Organisation (JITO) is a global organisation connecting Jains worldwide.
  • JITO Connect is an endeavour to help business and industry by providing an avenue for mutual networking and personal interactions.

3. MSME Minister Narayan Rane Inaugurates Enterprise India National Coir Conclave 2022 at Coimbatore

  • Union Minister for MSME Narayan Rane and Minister of State for MSME Shri Bhanu Pratap Singh Verma along with other State Ministers and senior officials inaugurated the ‘Enterprise India National Coir Conclave 2022’ being organised under the “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” at Coimbatore.

4. Air Marshal Sanjeev Kapoor Takes Charge as DG (Inspection and Safety)

  • Air Marshal Sanjeev Kapoor took charge as Director General (Inspection and Safety) [DG(I&S)] of the Indian Air Force at New Delhi.
  • The Air Marshal is a graduate of National Defence Academy and was commissioned in the Flying branch of IAF in December 1985 as a Transport Pilot.

5. State of the World’s Forests 2022: 10% of total forest area on Earth lost in 30 years

  • The world has lost 420 million hectares (mha), approximately 10.34 per cent of its total forest area in the last 30 years, according to the 2022 edition of The State of the World’s Forests (SOFO).
  • The 420 mha of forests have been lost between 1990 and 2020, due to deforestation, though forests cover 4.06 billion ha (31 per cent) of the earth’s geographical area.

6. Crypto investors’ profit jumps 5 times to $162.7 billion in 2021: Report

  • Investors in crypto assets around the world realized total gains of $162.7 billion in 2021, compared with just $32.5 billion in 2020, according to a report by blockchain data platform Chainalysis.
  • The year 2021 was a bumper phase for crypto assets with prices of bitcoin jumping 64% during the year, while ethereum spiked 393%.

7. Delimitation Commission on J&K submits report: 43 Assembly seats for Jammu, Kashmir to have 47

  • According to the report, the commission has recommended increasing the number of Assembly seats.
  • For Kashmir, it has been suggested to increase the seats from 46 to 47, while the Jammu region will have 43 seats instead of 37.
  • Now, J&K will have 90 Assembly seats.
  • The Delimitation Commission on Jammu and Kashmir was established on March 6, 2020.
  • The Delimitation Commission was headed by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai.

8. Venkataramani Sumantran appointed chairman of InterGlobe Aviation’s Board of Directors

  • Venkataramani Sumantran has been Appointed as the chairman of the Board of Directors of InterGlobe Aviation, the parent company of India’s largest airline IndiGo.
  • Sumantran succeeds Meleveetil Damodaran.
  • He is currently the Chairman & Managing Director of Celeris Technologies, a strategic advisory firm engaged in the domains of automotive, mobility, digital transformation.

9. Coast Guard commissions air squadron in Kochi

  • The Coast Guard has commissioned its second air squadron, 845 Squadron (CG), of Advanced Light Helicopter Mk-III at an event held at the Coast Guard air enclave, Nedumbassery.
  • The commissioning was done by Coast Guard Director General V.S. Pathania.
  • The first ALH Mk-III squadron of the Coast Guard is in Bhubaneswar.

10. India’s Services exports set a new record of USD 254.4 Billion in FY 2021-2022

  • India’s Services exports set a new record of USD 254.4 Billion in the financial year 2021-2022.
  • The new record achieved in 2021-22 beats the previous high of USD 213.2 Billion in 2019-20.
  • Also, Services exports hit an all-time monthly high of USD 26.9 Billion in March 2022.

11. Ronnie O’Sullivan wins record seventh World Snooker title; beats Judd Trump in final

  • Ronnie O’Sullivan won a record seventh World Snooker Championship crown after beating Judd Trump 18-13 in the final at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre(United Kingdom).
  • With this title, O’Sullivan has equalled Stephen Hendry’s modern-day record of seven world titles.
  • O’Sullivan, at 46, is the oldest World Championship finalist since mentor Ray Reardon in 1982.

12. IIT Bombay Ties Up With India Meteorological Department For Developing User-Friendly Weather Forecasting App

  • India Meteorological Department has signed an agreement with IIT Bombay to work together for developing climate solutions for the stakeholders at village, city, and district levels through user-friendly weather forecasting applications.
  • IIT Bombay has also set up the first-ever chair professorship in climate studies.
