1. Economist Bibek Debroy appointed Chancellor of Pune’s Deccan College

  • Economist and author Bibek Debroy has been appointed as the Chancellor of Pune’s Deccan College Post Graduate and Research Institute.
  • Debroy, who is presently the chairman of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM), will succeed well-known archaeologist AP Jamkhedkar.
  • Deccan College Post Graduate and Research Institute is the third oldest in the country.

2. 61st edition of Subroto Cup International Football Tournament begins after gap of two years

  • The 61st edition of the Subroto Cup International Football Tournament began after a gap of two years, at the BR Ambedkar Stadium in Delhi marking the start of the most prestigious football tournament for schools all over the country.
  • The tournament is organised by the Subroto Mukherjee Sports Education Society (SMSES) along with the Indian Air Force.

3. Karnataka minister Umesh Katti passes away at the age of 61

  • Karnataka Minister of Forests Umesh Katti passed away after he suffered a heart attack.
  • Umesh Katti was handling two portfolios in the Basavaraj Bommai government: Forest and Food and Civil Supply.
  • Umesh Katti, was an eight-time MLA from Hukkeri assembly constituency.

4. Sanjay Verma appointed next high commissioner to Canada

  • Senior diplomat Sanjay Kumar Verma has been appointed as India’s next high commissioner to Canada.
  • In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs said Verma is a 1988 batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service and is currently the ambassador of India to Japan.

5. Mahesh V Iyer takes over as the chairman of Mahanagar Gas Ltd

  • Mahesh Vishwanathan Iyer has been named the new chairman of Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL), a state-run city gas provider.
  • Iyer is the chairperson of Konkan LNG Limited and Central U.P. Gas Limited in addition to holding a directorship in ONGC Tripura Power Company Limited.
  • MGL is an enterprise of GAIL Limited and Government of Maharashtra.
  • MGL was incorporated on 8th May 1995.

6. Tripura Government sets up five bio villages incorporated with renewable energy; Six In Queue

  • Tripura has been lauded for having the first modified bio-village in the country with the use of eco-friendly technology and assembling livestock, agri and agri-allied, aqua support and maximum use of non-renewable sources of energy.
  • This is one of the five successful bio-village 2.0 conceptualised in Tripura.

7. Telangana recommends World Heritage tag for 2 megalithic sites

  • After achieving the UNESCO World Heritage tag for the Kakatiya Rudreshwara temple (Ramappa temple), Telangana has proposed two monuments with architectural and astronomical magnificence for coveted recognition this year.
  • Heritage Telangana has listed Niluvurallu in Mudumal village of Narayanpet district and Chaya Someshwaralayam as the sites that deserve due recognition.

8. Suresh Raina retires from all forms of Cricket

  • Former India cricketer Suresh Raina has announced his retirement from all forms of Cricket.
  • Earlier in 2020, Raina had announced his retirement from international cricket.
  • His announcement had come in less than an hour after MS Dhoni had announced his retirement on 15 August.
  • As an India player, Raina played 18 Tests, 226 ODIs and 78 T20s.

9. Liz Truss has become the new UK PM, 3rd woman PM to hold UK reins

  • Mary Elizabeth Truss, prominently referred to as Liz Truss was announced as the next prime minister of the United Kingdom (UK), after she defeated rival Rishi Sunak in the Conservative Party leadership race.
  • Truss, 47, had emerged as a contender for the prime ministerial role after her predecessor Boris Johnson agreed to step down.

10. Indian GM Aravindh Chithambaram wins Dubai Open chess tournament

  • Grandmaster Aravindh Chithambaram emerged champion in the 22nd Dubai Open chess tournament on Sunday, with 7.5 points as seven Indians finished in the top 10.
  • This is sixth overall, fifth individual triumph of the year out of the eight tournaments he played.
  • The last tournament he played was over 1.5 months ago which he won at 41st Benasque Open 2022.

11. HAL-L&T consortium bags Rs 860 Crore ISRO contract for five PSLV

  • HAL-L&T consortium bagged an Rs 860 crore contract for the end-to-end realisation of five Polar Satellite Launch Vehicles (PSLV) over a period of four years from the NewsSpace India Limited (NSIL).
  • The contract was exchanged today between HAL and NSIL during the inaugural session of the 7th Bengaluru Space Expo 2022 at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC).

12. HDFC Bank, Precision Biometric selected by RBI for test phase under Regulatory Sandbox

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said two entities – namely HDFC Bank (in partnership with Swedish firm Crunchfish AB) and Precision Biometric India Private Ltd. – have been selected for the ‘test phase’ of the ‘On Tap’ application facility for the theme ‘Retail Payments’ under regulatory Sandbox.

13. Indian Army Chief Manoj Pande conferred honorary rank of Nepal Army General

  • Indian Army Chief General Manoj Pande was conferred with the honorary rank of General of Nepal Army by President of Nepal Bidhya Devi Bhandari in a ceremony at her residence Sheetal Niwas.
  • The Indian Army Chief’s visit aims to provide an opportunity to enhance existing bilateral defence ties and strengthen cooperation in areas of mutual interest between the two countries.

14. CCI clears PayU’s $4.7 billion BillDesk acquisition

  • After a year since PayU announced the acquisition of payment gateway provider BillDesk for $4.7 billion, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) has finally allowed the 100 per cent of equity share capital of Indiaideas.com (BillDesk) by PayU Payments.
  • BillDesk, founded in 2000, is an Indian success story and one of the leading payment businesses in the country.

15. New Delhi’s Rajpath and Central Vista lawns to be renamed as ‘Kartavya Path’

  • The government has decided to rename the historic Rajpath and Central Vista lawns in the national capital as ‘Kartavya Path’.
  • Rajpath was known as Kingsway during British Rule.
  • Earlier, the name of the road on which PM’s residence is located was changed from Race Course Road to Lok Kalyan Marg.
