1. England’s Rehan Ahmed becomes youngest to claim five-fer on test debut in men’s cricket

  • England teenager Rehan Ahmed (18y and 128d) became the youngest debutant in the history of men’s Test cricket to claim a five-fer, going past current Australian Test captain Pat Cummins, who had achieved the feat while he was 18 years and 196 days old.

2. Paytm and HDFC ERGO launch insurance policy to protect mobile transactions

  • Paytm launched ‘Paytm Payment Protect’, a group insurance scheme in partnership with HDFC ERGO General Insurance to secure transactions across all apps and wallets via UPI.
  • With this new insurance offering, which comes at a cost of as low as Rs 30 per annum, users can now secure themselves against mobile fraudulent transactions up to Rs 10,000.

3. RBI imposes Rs 2.66 crore penalty on Bank of Bahrain & Kuwait BSC

  • RBI fined Bank of Bahrain & Kuwait BSC Rs 2.66 crore for non-compliance with cybersecurity framework directives.
  • RBI said the penalty is based on the deficiencies in regulatory compliance and is not intended to pronounce upon the validity of any transaction or agreement entered into by the bank with its customers.

5. Account aggregator network: 94 FIUs, 26 FIPs onboarded on RBI’s financial data-sharing system

  • The Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) financial data-sharing system Account Aggregator (AA), launched in September 2021, has onboarded 94 financial institutions as financial information users (FIUs) as of December 12, 2022.
  • Minister of State for finance Bhagwat Karad shared details in a written reply to a question from the Lok Sabha.

6. Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra became the most written-about athlete in 2022 leaving behind Usain Bolt

  • Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra was the most written-about track and field athlete in 2022, displacing Jamaican sprint legend Usain Bolt from the top of the list after years.
  • Neeraj Chopra, the Tokyo Olympics men’s javelin champion, led the way with 812 articles ahead of the Jamaican women’s sprint trio of Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah (751 articles).

7. NASA successfully launches game-changing SWOT Mission to survey earth’s water

  • The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) launched its latest Earth science satellite to track nearly all of the water on Earth’s surface.
  • The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) spacecraft was launched atop a SpaceX rocket from Space Launch Complex 4E at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California with a prime mission of three years.

8. SEBI issues guidelines for performance benchmarking, reporting for portfolio managers

  • The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has mandated how portfolio managers should conduct performance benchmarking and performance reporting.
  • The provisions will come into effect from April 1, 2023.
  • Portfolio managers document their investment philosophy in the investment approach (‘IA’), in order to achieve the client’s investment objectives.

9. Indian Women’s Hockey Team beat Spain 1-0 to lift FIH Nations Cup in Valencia

  • In Hockey, the Indian Women’s Hockey Team defeated Spain 1-0 in the Final to win the FIH Women’s Nations Cup 2022 in Valencia, Spain.
  • Indian remained undefeated during the tournament and also got promoted to the 2023-24 FIH Hockey Women’s Pro League.
  • This was the inaugural season of the Women’s FIH Nations Cup, with a promotion to next year’s Women’s Pro League hockey.

10. Adani group to invest Rs 10,700 crore to expand Lucknow airport

  • Adani Group will invest Rs 10,700 crore to expand Lucknow Airport, increasing its annual passenger throughput from 4 million passengers per annum to 39 MPPA.
  • According to earlier reports, the Adani group would invest about Rs 10,000 crore in the Ahmedabad airport between 2023 and 2027 to triple its passenger handling capacity, making it a regional hub.

11. PM lays foundation stone of projects worth Rs2,450 in Shillong

  • The multiple projects include the inauguration of 320 completed and 890 under construction 4G mobile towers, the new campus of IIM Shillong, at Umsawli, the Shillong – Diengpasoh Road which will provide better connectivity to new Shillong satellite township and four other roads projects across the three states viz. Meghalaya, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh.

12. IMF executive board approves $3bn loan to Egypt under Extended Fund Facility

  • The IMF approves a $3 billion loan to Egypt, with an immediate $347 million disbursement.
  • Egypt will benefit from a 46-month loan under the expanded fund arrangement.
  • The agreement is for 2,350.17 million SDRs, or Special Drawing Rights, an IMF unit of account based on a basket of five major international currencies, equivalent to about $3 bn.

  • The bank had earlier declared JC Flowers Asset Reconstruction Private Limited (JC Flowers ARC) as the winner of the Swiss Challenge process for sale of its identified portfolio of stressed assets.

  • According to World Bank data, between 1995 and 2021, India received the most remittances in the world for 23 consecutive years.

  • In 2020, when remittance flows to India were 0.22 per cent lesser than what it received in 2019, it still topped the list for maximum remittance worldwide.
