1. Police Commemoration Day 21 October 2022

  • Every year, India celebrates Police Commemoration Day on October 21 to honour the police personnel who sacrificed their lives while discharging their duties.
  • The day remembers the sacrifices made by the 10 policemen who were martyred fighting for the country during a Chinese firing in 1959.
  • The Police Commemoration Day Parade is held every year since 2012 at the Police Memorial in Chanakyapuri, Delhi.

2. ISSF World Championship: Ramita Jindal crowned world champion in 10 meter Air Rifle Women Junior event in Cairo

  • India’s Ramita Jindal was crowned world champion in the 10-meter Air Rifle Women Junior event at the International Shooting Sport Federation, ISSF World Championship Rifle/Pistol in Cairo, Egypt.
  • Tilottama Sen won a second medal for India at the event, a bronze, after she shot 261.0 in the ranking round to finish third.

3. Pradeep Singh Kharola appointed CMD, India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO)

  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Kharola as Chairman & Managing Director, ITPO in the rank and pay of Secretary to the Government of India on a contract basis for a period of two years.
  • Kharola will continue to hold the charge of the post of Chairman, National Recruitment Agency till appointment of a regular incumbent in his place.

4. Aramane Giridhar named defence secretary, Sanjay Malhotra new revenue secretary

  • Road Transport and Highways Secretary Aramane Giridhar will be the new defence secretary, after the retirement of Ajay Kumar on October 31.
  • National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) chairperson Alka Upadhyaya will be the new road and transport secretary replacing Giridhar.
  • Sanjay Malhotra will be the new revenue secretary after Tarun Bajaj completes his term on November 30.

5. V-Mart acquires e-commerce startup LimeRoad for Rs 31 crore

  • Fashion retailer V-Mart Retail (V-Mart) has acquired e-commerce platform LimeRoad for a lump sum cash of around Rs 31.12 crore.
  • The Gurgaon-based startup LimeRoad was founded in 2012 by Suchi Mukherjee, Ankush Mehra and Prashant Malik.

6. Total balance in PM Jan Dhan accounts crosses ₹1.75-lakh crore mark

  • As per the latest Government data, the total balance stood at ₹1,75,225 crore as on October 5, 2022, as the total number of beneficiaries touched 47 crore.
  • Women beneficiaries own a larger chunk in the scheme at 26.16 crore accounts of which the bulk (31.42 crore accounts) are in rural and semi-urban areas.
  • Launched in August 2014, PM JMDJY has recently completed 8 years.

7. Reliance Jio overtakes BSNL to become largest landline service provider in August

  • Reliance Jio became the largest landline service provider in the country for the first time, in August.
  • With 7.35 million landline connections as on August 31, Reliance Jio beat state-owned telecom operator and hitherto market leader BSNL’s 7.13 million connections, according to the latest data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai).
  • Third-placed MTNL provided 2.6 million connections.

  • Max Life Insurance Company Ltd. has appointed Ranbheer Singh Dhariwal as chief executive officer (CEO) of its wholly-owned subsidiary, Max Life Pension Fund Management Ltd., effective 15 October.
  • Dhariwal will be responsible for managing and expanding Max Life Pension Fund and lead end-to-end business operations.

9. Bharati Das appointed as the new Controller General of Accounts

  • The Centre has appointed Bharati Das, as the Controller General of Accounts (CGA), Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance.
  • She is the 27th Controller General of Accounts, Ministry of Finance.

    • The Controller General of Accounts is the principal advisor on accounting matters of the Union Government.

10. Karim Benzema wins Ballon d’Or as Alexia Putellas retains women’s prize

  • Barcelona’s midfielder Gavi won the Kopa Trophy, the award presented to the best player under age 21.

11. 90th Interpol General Assembly is being held in India from 18 to 21 October

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened the INTERPOL General Assembly, the supreme governing body of the world’s largest international police organization.
  • The 90th Annual General Assembly of Interpol is taking place between October, 18-21 at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.
  • Central Bureau of Investigation(CBI) special director Praveen Sinha is Interpol’s delegate for Asia.

12. Govt approves increase in Minimum Support Price for all Rabi Crops for Marketing Season 2023-24

  • The Government has approved the increase in the Minimum Support Prices for all mandated Rabi Crops for Marketing Season 2023-24.Government has increased the MSP to ensure remunerative prices to the growers for their produce.
  • The absolute highest increase in MSP has been approved for lentil (Masur) at Rs.500 per quintal followed by rapeseed and mustard at Rs. 400 per quintal.

13. Indus Waters Treaty: World Bank appoints neutral expert, chairman of Court of Arbitration  for two hydroelectric projects

  • The World Bank has appointed a neutral expert and a chairman of the Court of Arbitration regarding the Kishenganga and Ratle hydroelectric power plants, in view of disagreements between India and Pakistan over the 1960 Indus Water Treaty.
  • Michel Lino has been appointed as the Neutral Expert and Sean Murphy has been appointed as Chairman of the Court of Arbitration.

  • Bansal, who spent 25 years at the Swedish telecom network company, was most recently its president for Europe and Latin America.

16. Swedish Parliament elects Ulf Kristersson as Prime Minister

  • The Swedish parliament elected Ulf Kristersson — the conservative Moderate Party leader — as the Prime Minister at the head of a coalition that is being supported by a once radical far-right party.
  • Kristersson, 59, was elected by 176-173 votes.
  • Kristersson will be replacing Magdalena Andersson, who heads Sweden’s largest party, the Social Democrats.
