1. Weightlifter Bindyarani Devi wins silver, India’s fourth medal in Birmingham

  • Weightlifter Bindyarani Devi won the silver medal in women’s 55 kg event at the Commonwealth Games 2022.
  • The Indian lifter managed a total weight of 202 kg.
  • Her best attempt in the snatch was 86 kg while she managed a weight of 116 kg in clean & jerk.
  • She is from Manipur, India.

2. Mirabai Chanu clinches India’s 1st gold medal of Commonwealth Games 2022, Bindyarani wins Silver

  • Mirabai Chanu, one of India’s top gold medal prospects, lived up to expectations by clinching the first gold medal for the country at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022 in the women’s 49 kg weightlifting final.
  • Chanu, who had won the gold four years ago in Gold Coast, not only defended her title successfully by lifting 201 kgs (88 kg in snatch and 113 kg in clean and jerk).
  • Her full name is Saikhom Mirabai Chanu.
  • She is form Imphal East, Manipur, India.

3. PM pays tribute to great revolutionary leaders who sacrificed their lives for country’s freedom

  • 31st July, is the martyrdom day of Shaheed Udham Singh.
  • Addressing the nation on his Mann Ki Baat programme on All India Radio, Prime Minister offered tributes to him as well as all such other great revolutionaries who sacrificed themselves for the country.

4. Edelweiss General Insurance launches Switch ‘pay as you drive’ add-on

  • Edelweiss General Insurance (EGI) has launched the Switch Pay as you Drive (PAYD) add-on for its private car package policy, adding to its usage-based motor insurance product suite in India.
  • EGI had launched Switch 2.0, which is the only product in India that combines pay-as-you-drive and pay-how-you-drive benefits.

5. Karnataka minister adopts 31 cows under ‘Punyakoti Dattu Yojana’

  • Karnataka animal husbandry minister Prabhu B Chavan adopted 31 cows in the government and private goshalas, one in each district under “Punyakoti Dattu Yojana” (cow adoption) portal.
  • The portal was launched by chief minister Basavaraj Bommai on 31st July, Chavan mentioned providing nutrition and care for the cows as the motive for the adoption.

6. ‘black widow’ is heaviest-known neutron star

  • Astronomers have for the first time discovered the heaviest known neutron star, an object that forms when the core of a massive star undergoes gravitational collapse at the end of its life.
  • The star is spinning so fast that it has shredded and consumed nearly the entire mass of its companion star to emerge as the heaviest known.

7. Dr. Himanshu Pathak Appointed as Secretary-DARE cum DG- ICAR in Dept. of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare

  • Himanshu Pathak was appointed as the Director General (DG) of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and Secretary of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE).
  • Pathak is currently the Director of the ICAR-National Institute of Abiotic Stress Management in Baramati, Maharashtra.

8. IFS officer Pranay Verma appointed India’s new ambassador to Bangladesh

  • Pranay Verma has been appointed India’s new high commissioner to Bangladesh.
  • Verma, a 1994-batch Indian Foreign Service officer who is presently serving as India’s envoy to Vietnam, will succeed incumbent Vikram Doraiswami.
  • Doraiswami is set to assume charge as Indian High Commissioner to the UK.
  • Sandeep Arya appointed India’s next envoy to Vietnam.

9. Bandhan Bank opens its first currency chest in Patna’s Deedargunj

  • Bandhan Bank has opened a currency chest in Deedargunj, Patna.
  • This is the bank’s first ever currency chest and will help in cash management for the branches and ATMs in the city.
  • This currency chest will help people, MSMEs and small traders with supply of currency notes to the bank branches and the ATMs as and when required.

10. Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority signs concession pact for JNPCT

  • Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) has signed a concession agreement with a consortium which won the bid for the privatisation of its container terminal.
  • The consortium of J M Baxi Ports and Logistics and CMA Terminals bagged the contract for the privatisation of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Container Terminal (JNPCT) at an investment of Rs 872 crore.

11. Lulo Rose: Rare pink diamond, likely the largest in 300 years, discovered in Angola

  • A rare 170-carat pink rough diamond, weighing 34 grams, has been discovered at Lucapa’s Lulo Mine in Angola.
  • Titled ‘The Lulo Rose’, it is touted to be the largest pink diamond discovered in the last 300 years.

12. Ministry of Tourism has recognised Adventure Tourism as a Niche Tourism Product

  • The Ministry of Tourism has recognised Adventure Tourism as a Niche Tourism Product, which inter alia includes Water Sports activities, to promote India, including Bihar, as a 365 days destination and attract tourists with specific interest.
  • To position India as a preferred destination for adventure tourism globally, the Ministry of Tourism has formulated a National Strategy for Adventure Tourism.

13. Indian, Malaysian bodies ink pact to promote palm oil

  • Indian Vegetable Oil Producers’ Association (IVPA) & Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to further cooperation between the two organisations to promote the use of palm oil.
  • The MoU is expected to expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest, to promote the development and use of Malaysian palm oil and MSPO-certified palm oil.

14. Robot ‘Eagle,’ Fluent In 30 Languages, Teaches Science & Humanities At A Hyderabad School

  • A school in Hyderabad has introduced robotic teachers, said to be the first of its kind in India for students.
  • The teaching robot, called Eagle is said to be capable of teaching students of grades 5 to 11, in the classroom along with the human teacher and also in a stand-alone mode.
  • It was introduced by the Indus Trust, which runs a network of Indus International Schools.

15. The Reserve Bank imposed several restrictions on two UP-based cooperative banks

  • The Reserve Bank imposed several restrictions, including on fund withdrawals, on two Uttar Pradesh-based cooperative banks in view of their deteriorating financial position.
  • The two lenders are Lucknow Urban Co-operative Bank And Urban Co-operative Bank Limited, Sitapur.
