1. India signs MoU with Gulf Cooperation Council to facilitate consultation

  • External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday signed a Memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Secretary-General of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Nayef Falah Mubarak Al-Hajraf on the mechanism of consultations between India and the GCC.
  • The External Affairs Minister is on a two-day visit to Saudi Arabia from 10-12 September 2022.

2. Central government fixes maximum number of wards at 250 in Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD)

  • Central government has fixed the maximum number of wards in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi at 250.
  • 42 wards will be reserved for Scheduled Castes.
  • Earlier, the total number of seats in the three MCDs was 272.
  • In May this year, a notification was issued for the unification of three civic bodies of Delhi.

3. President Droupadi Murmu nominates Gulam Ali Gurjar Muslim from J&K to Rajya Sabha

  • President Droupadi Murmu has nominated Gulam Ali, a Gurjar Muslim from Jammu and Kashmir, to Rajya Sabha.
  • Mr Ali has been nominated to the Upper House on the recommendation of the Central government.

    • This is perhaps for the first time a Gurjar Muslim from the region has been sent to the Rajya Sabha as a nominated member.

4. PM Matsya Sampada Yojana completes Two years; to generate 68 lakh employments by the end of 2024-25

  • Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) completed its Second anniversary.
  • The scheme envisages the generation of 68 lakh employment by the end of 2024-25.
  • The Fisheries sector has shown an impressive growth of 14.3 percent from 2019-20 to 2021-22.

5. UDAN 5.0. will aim for air connectivity to 54 new travel destinations

  • The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) plans to connect more than 50 wildlife and tourism destinations in the next stage of the regional connectivity initiative Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik (UDAN).

    • The UDAN scheme was started in October 2016 with the objective of providing air connectivity in tier II and tier III cities and to make flying affordable for common citizens.

6. Meghalaya CM launches ‘Residents Safety & Security’ portal

  • Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma launched the online portal of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA) in state capital Shillong.
  • The web-based system is first being rolled out in seven localities of Shillong- Nongrim Hills, Lapalang, Nongmynsong, Nongrah, Pohkseh, Riat Laban and Wahdienglieng.

  • Navtej Sarna’s latest book, Crimson Spring, shortlisted for the JCB Prize for Literature, starts with the Jalianwalla Bagh massacre that took place on April 13, 1919, and goes back and forth in time to bring that era and the aftermath of the event alive.

8. Australia white-ball captain Aaron Finch to retire from one-day internationals cricket

  • Australia white-ball captain Aaron Finch will retire from one-day international (ODI) cricket after Sunday’s match against New Zealand.
  • Finch has led Australia’s ODI and Twenty20 teams since 2018.
  • The 35-year-old opening batter has played 145 ODIs and scored 5,401 runs at an average of 39.13.
  • He led Australia to their first T20 World Cup title in 2021.

9. Volker Turk appointed new UN High Commissioner for Human Rights

  • United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appointed on Thursday Volker Turk of Austria as the next United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, following approval by the General Assembly.
  • Turk will succeed Michelle Bachelet of Chile, who served as High Commissioner from September 1, 2018 through August 31, 2022.

10. HDFC Bank inks MoU with Institute of Economic Growth  to conduct independent research

  • In order to support a Chair to conduct independent research, HDFC Bank and the Institute of Economic Growth (IEG) have signed a MoI.
  • It would be located on the IEG campus in New Delhi and be called as the “HDFC Bank Chair of Banking and Finance.”
  • The Bank would provide IEG with a financing assistance of Rs 6.75 crore over a five-year period for this Chair.

11. Bihar CM Nitish Kumar inaugurates India’s longest rubber dam on Falgu river

  • Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar inaugurated India’s longest rubber dam on Falgu river in Gaya, where lakhs of pilgrims from across the country and abroad arrive every year during the Pitripaksha Mela to pay homage to their ancestors, and a steel foot over bridge for the convenience of the visitors.
  • The foundation stone of this scheme was laid on 23 September 2020.

12. Singapore awards Distinguished Service Medal to former Indian navy chief Sunil Lamba

  • Singapore has conferred the prestigious Pingat Jasa Gemilang (Tentera), or the Meritorious Service Medal (Military), on Admiral Sunil Lanba (Retd), the former Chief of Naval Staff, Indian Navy.
  • The award is a recognition of strong bilateral defence ties between India and Singapore.

13. IRDAI allots insurance broking license to Lord’s Mark Insurance
