1. Dr M Srinivas appointed as new director of AIIMS New Delhi

  • The Appointment Committee of the Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi appointed Dr M Srinivas as the new director of the prestigious All India Institute Of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
  • The tenure of the outgoing AIIMS director Dr Randeep Guleria came to an end.
  • Dr Guleria joined as the Director on March 28, 2017.

2. Rajiv Bahl appointed as new DG of ICMR, will replace Balram Bhargava

  • The Central government appointed Dr Rajiv Bahl currently posted in WHO as a Director General of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) cum – Secretary Department of Health Research (DHR) for a period of 3 years.
  • ICMR, New Delhi, the apex body in India for the formulation, coordination and promotion of biomedical research.
  • ICMR has 27 institutes located in different parts of India.

3. Britannia Industries elevates Varun Berry as Executive VC & MD, appoints Rajneet Kohli as CEO

  • Britannia Industries, maker of the popular Good Day and Tiger biscuits, has appointed Rajneet Kohli as its Executive Director & Chief Executive Officer.
  • The company also announced that it has elevated Varun Berry to Executive Vice-Chairman and Managing Director.
  • Kohli will take over as the position w.e.f 26th September, 2022 and will report to Varun Berry.

4. Former India hockey captain Dilip Tirkey unanimously elected as president

  • Dilip Tirkey, a former India hockey captain and member of the gold medal-winning team at the 1998 Asian Games, was unanimously elected as Hockey India (HI) president today.
  • First time in history, a former sportsperson and an Olympian has gone on to head the national body.
  • He represented India at the Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996, Sydney in 2000, and Athens in 2004.

5. India hosts 10th IBSA meet on sidelines of UNGA for multilateral issues

  • India hosted the 10th Ministerial Commission of Foreign Ministers of the IBSA, on the sidelines of the 77th United Nations General Assembly.
  • The IBSA is a trilateral, developmental initiative between India, Brazil and South Africa to promote South-South cooperation and exchange.

6. REC accorded with ‘Maharatna’ company status

  • REC has been accorded with the status of a ‘Maharatna’ Central Public Sector Enterprise, thus giving REC greater operational and financial autonomy.
  • An order to this effect was issued yesterday by the Department of Public Enterprises, under the Ministry of Finance.

    • Full form = Rural Electrification Corporation.
    • Incorporated in 1969, REC is an NBFC focusing on Power Sector Financing and Development across India.

7. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar inaugurates 3rd edition of Lok Manthan programme in Guwahati

  • Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar inaugurated the third edition of the Lok Manthan programme.
  • Lokmanthan is an august occasion where artists, intellectuals, and academicians drawn from different parts of the country converge and brainstorm on the questions that haunt the society.

  • India’s Radhika Batra, Zahra Joya of Afghanistan, Vanessa Nakate of Uganda and EU chief Ursula von der Leyen have been honoured by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for their extraordinary work towards achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

9. RBI directs Mahindra Finance to stop outsourcing its recovery activity through agents

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) barred Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services from carrying out recovery or repossession activity through third-party until further notice.
  • However, the company is allowed to carry out the activity through its own employees.
  • RBI’s ban comes after certain material supervisory concerns observed in the company.

10. RBI cancels licence of Laxmi Co-operative Bank, depositors can claim up to Rs 5 lakh

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) terminated the licence of Maharashtra based Laxmi Co-operative Bank, citing inadequate capital and earning prospects.
  • On liquidation, every depositor will be entitled to a deposit insurance claim amount of up to a monetary ceiling of Rs 5 lakh from the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC), RBI said.
  • About DICGC:
    • Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation is a specialised division of Reserve Bank of India.
    • It is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Finance, Government of India.

11. India bags UN award for its initiative to control, prevent hypertension under National Health Mission

  • In a significant achievement and recognition of the country’s efforts against hypertension, India has won a UN award for its initiative to control and prevent hypertension under the government’s National Health Mission.
  • The India Hypertension Control Initiative which is a large-scale hypertension intervention under National Health Mission, has been recognized for the award.

12. Navy buys ‘enhanced range’ BrahMos missiles for Rs 1,700 crore

  • Providing impetus to “Aatmanirbharta” (self-reliance) in defence production, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed a contract with the Indo-Russian joint venture (JV) – BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited (BAPL) – for buying the latest version of the BrahMos missile for its newest warships.

13. UCO Bank becomes first lender to get RBI’s approval for rupee trade

  • Public sector lender UCO Bank has received the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI’s) approval to open a special vostro account with Gazprombank of Russia for trade settlement in Indian rupees.
  • The Kolkata-based lender is the first bank to receive regulator’s approval following the RBI’s decision to allow Indian banks to settle trade in Indian currency.

14. Gujarat gets over Rs 2.8K-crore loan from World Bank for health care

  • The World Bank has approved a USD 350 million (over Rs 2,832 crore) loan to Gujarat for spending towards public healthcare services, focussed specially on adolescent girls and disease surveillance.
  • The loan will be utilised through the state government’s Systems Reform Endeavours For Transformed Health Achievement In Gujarat (SRESTHA-G) Programme.

15. REITs, InvITs with net worth of Rs 100 cr or higher can issue CPs

  • The capital markets regulator SEBI approved the issuance of commercial papers by emerging investment vehicles, Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) and Infrastructure Investment Trust (InvIT).
  • Reserve Bank’s directions on Commercial Paper said that InvITs and REITs with a net worth of at least Rs 100 crore are eligible to issue commercial paper.
  • What is Commercial Paper or CP?
    • It is a short-term debt instrument issued by companies to raise funds for a time period up to one year.
    • It is an unsecured money market instrument issued in the form of a promissory note and was introduced in India for the first time in 1990.
    • It can be issued in denominations of Rs. 5 lakh or multiples thereof.
