1. FedEx Founder steps down as CEO after 50 years; Indian-born Raj Subramaniam takes over

  • FedEx founder Frederick Smith will step down as chief executive after some five decades atop the transport behemoth.
  • Chief Operating Officer Raj Subramaniam will take the company’s helm.
  • Smith first devised the idea for Federal Express – which adopted FedEx as its brand name in 1994.
  • The transition will take place on June 1.

2. IFS officer Renu Singh appointed Forest Research Institute (FRI) director

  • Dr Renu Singh has been appointed by MoEF as the next director of Forest Research Institute (FRI) in Dehradun.
  • She will be the institute’s second woman director.
  • Singh joined as FRI director after AS Rawat, director general, ICFRE, handed over his additional charge of director FRI to her.

3. IAF unveils new initiative for refuelling its convoys

  • The Indian Air Force unveiled a new initiative with the Indian Oil Corporation Ltd under which its convoys will be refuelled at fuel stations of the state-run energy major.
  • The defence ministry said a ‘Fleet Card – Fuel on Move’ has been rolled out to facilitate the refuelling of convoys belonging to the IAF.
  • The new initiative was launched by Air Chief Marshal V R Chaudhari.

4. JP Morgan India chief Leo Puri joins Tata Sons board

  • Leo Puri, a financial sector veteran, and chairman of JP Morgan India, South and Southeast Asia, has been inducted on the board of Tata Sons, officials aware of the development said.

5. Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) gets Rs 473 cr contract for 8 high-speed vessels

  • The Ministry of Defence has formally placed an order with Goa Shipyard Limited for 8 fast patrol vessels for the Indian Coast Guard.
  • GSL was awarded the Rs 473 cr contract after the Vasco-based shipyard emerged as the lowest bidder for the project.
  • The ministry is expected to ink two contracts with GSL for 8 fast patrol vessels & 7 next generation off-shore patrol warships.

6. India end campaign at WTT Contender 2022 championship with two medals

  • India ended their campaign at the World Table Tennis (WTT) Contender 2022 championship at Doha in Qatar with two medals.
  • Mixed Doubles pair of Manika Batra and Gnanasekaran Sathiyan settled for a silver while Achanta Sharath Kamal bagged a Bronze in Men’s Singles at the tournament.

7. ILO elects former Prime Minister Gilbert F. Houngbo of Togo as new Director-General

  • The International Labour Organization’s (ILO) next Director-General will be Gilbert F. Houngbo from Togo.
  • Houngbo is currently President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).
  • He was elected by the ILO’s Governing Body, comprising representatives of governments, workers and employers, during their meeting in Geneva.
  • He will be the 11th Director-General of the ILO, and the first African to hold the post.

8. Wilfried Brutsaert aka ‘Mr Evaporation’ wins the Stockholm Water Prize 2022

  • The renowned hydrologist Wilfried Brutsaert, also known as Mr. Evaporation, has been awarded the Stockholm Water Prize 2022 for his groundbreaking work to quantify environmental evaporation, helping to make accurate predictions of the impact that climate change has on local rainfall patterns and water sources.

9. Indian Railways lift Obaidullah Khan Hockey Cup in nail-biting finish

  • Indian Railways’ men Hockey team won the prestigious Obaidullah Khan Heritage Hockey Cup held at Bhopal (MP) from 21.03.2022 to 27.03.2022.
  • In the final match held on Sunday, the Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) team beat Army XI by 2.
  • The prestigious hockey tournament was played at Major Dhyanchand Stadium, Bhopal.

10. India successfully test-fires two MRSAMs off Odisha coast

  • Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has conducted two successful flight tests of Medium Range Surface to Air Missile (MRSAM) at Integrated Test Range, Chandipur off the coast of Odisha.
  • The flight tests were carried out as part of the live firing trials against high-speed aerial targets.

11. October 5 to be designated as National Dolphin Day

  • The Union environment ministry has designated October 5 as the National Dolphin Day, to be celebrated annually starting this year.
  • The decision to designate a National Dolphin Day was taken by the standing committee of the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL).
  • The NBWL is chaired by the Prime Minister.

12. Cochin International Airport (CIAL) bags ‘Covid Champion Award’

  • Cochin International Airport Limited bagged the ‘Covid Champion Award’ at Wings India 2022, Asia’s largest event on civil aviation jointly organised by the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry at Begumpet Airport, Hyderabad.
  • CIAL managing director S. Suhas received the ‘Covid Champions” trophy from the Minister for Civil Aviation.
  • Minister for Civil Aviation : Jyotiraditya Scindia.

13. Gujarat retains top position at NITI Aayog’s Export Preparedness Index 2021

  • Gujarat has retained the top position at the NITI Aayog’s second edition of the Export Preparedness Index 2021 followed by Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana as the top 10 performers.
  • Among union territories, Delhi has topped the index.
  • Jammu and Kashmir ranked third.

14. Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend 5th BIMSTEC Summit virtually on March 30

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the 5th BIMSTEC Summit on 30th of this month.
  • The Summit Meeting, which is being held in a virtual mode, will be hosted by Sri Lanka which is the current BIMSTEC chair.
  • The Summit, meetings of BIMSTEC Senior Officials will take place on 28th March followed by meetings of the BIMSTEC Foreign Ministers on 29th of March, 2022.
