• World Thrift Day is celebrated annually on 31st October worldwide, but in India, the day is celebrated annually on 30th October.
• Due to the death of the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on the same day in 1984, this day is celebrated on 30th October in India.
• This year it will mark the 98th celebration of World Thrift Day on 30th October 2022.

2. Malabar becomes 1st Indian jeweller to import 25 kg gold from UAE under CEPA

• Retail jewellery major Malabar Gold and Diamonds has become the first jeweller in India to import 25 kg gold under the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between India and the UAE.
• The gold has been imported through ICICI Bank with one percent duty rebate under the agreement.
• The CEPA between India and the UAE came into effect on May 1, 2022.

• As Delhi university celebrates its centenary, Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas & Housing and Urban Affairs, Hardeep Singh Puri launched an anthology of writings by its well-known alumni titled — ‘Delhi University: Celebrating 100 Glorious Years’—and reminisced the time he spent in DU’s Hindu College and noted that a good institution is defined by its student body.

4. Tata Power board approves appointment of ex-home secretary Rajiv Mehrishi as independent director

• The board “unanimously approved” Mehrishi’s appointment as an “additional director (non-executive, independent), not liable to retire by rotation, for a term of five years with effect from October 28, 2022.
• Mehrishi is a retired 1978-batch IAS officer of Rajasthan cadre, who served as the Union home secretary between 2015 and 2017.
• He is currently an independent director on the boards of the following companies: Piramal Enterprises, Dabur India, Infomerics Analytics and Research, Leap Insights Foundation and Tata Power Renewable Energy.
• The ex-bureaucrat “fulfils the criteria of independence” as required under the provisions of the Companies Act, 2013.

5. Shefali Juneja elected as chairperson of UN’s Air Transport Committee

• Shefali Juneja, India’s representative to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), has been elected as the chairperson of United Nations’ specialized aviation agency’s Air Transport Committee (ATC).
• She is a 1992 batch officer of the Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax cadre).
• Before joining the ICAO she was serving as a Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA), Government of India.
• India secured this position in ICAO after 28 years when Juneja was unanimously elected to the post.
• She is the first woman to represent India in the ICAO.

6. 24-member IRDAI panel to develop insurance cover for rural population

• IRDAI has set up a 24-member committee headed by Thomas M Devasia to develop and suggest an affordable and comprehensive cover for the rural population.
• The committee will explore and recommend on how to bring about synergies in the working and operations of ‘Bima Vahak’, ‘Bima Vistaar’ and the digital platform – Bima Sugam.

7. Reliance becomes first Indian firm to post earnings call on metaverse

• Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) posted the proceedings of its second quarter earnings call on the metaverse, becoming the first Indian firm to use the medium to engage with its stakeholders.
• The earning call, which can be accessed through any device (even a smartphone) was produced in partnership with GMetri — a no-code metaverse creation platform, sources said.

12. Indian Navy, Drone Federation to jointly develop advanced maritime UAVs

• The Technology Development and Acceleration Cell (TDAC) of the Naval Innovation Indigenisation Organisation (NIIO) under the Indian Navy and Drone Federation of India (DFI) have joined hands to collaboratively work towards promoting indigenous development, manufacturing and testing of a drone, counter-drone, and associated technologies for the Navy.

13. 97% phones used in country are made in India: Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar

• In 2014, over 92 percent of mobile phones used in India were imported, today over 97 percent of mobile phones used in India are made in India.
• Today we export electronic devices worth $12 billion (roughly Rs. 98,800 crore) and the new data protection bill will be “very simple and modern”, MoS Rajeev Chandrasekhar said.

• Indian scientists at the Indian Institute of Geomagnetism (IIG) have developed an indigenous Overhauser Magnetometer, one of the most accurate magnetometers extensively used by all magnetic observatories around the world, making way for reducing the cost of sampling and sensing experiments essential for geomagnetic sampling.
• The sensor installed at Alibag Magnetic Observatory (MO) can reduce India’s dependence on commercial OVH magnetometers for performing geomagnetic field measurements.
• OVH magnetometers are best, because of their higher accuracy, higher sensitivity, and efficient power consumption.
