1. Agriculture ministry, NAFED sign MoU to boost international year of millets 2023

• The department of agriculture, farmers welfare and the national agricultural cooperative marketing federation of India signed an MoU to boost the initiative to promote millets towards the celebration of the international year of millets 2023.
• Both organisations will work together for the promotion and marketing of millet-based products.
• In 2018, the government decided to mark the national year of millets.

2. PayU calls off $4.7 bn acquisition of BillDesk; Prosus terminates deal after 13 months

• Prosus NV, which owns PayU, has terminated a USD 4.7 billion (about Rs 38,400 crore) deal to acquire Indian payments firm BillDesk, saying certain conditions precedent were not met.
• Prosus, the global investment arm of South African multinational Nasper, on August 31 last year announced the acquisition of BillDesk in an all-cash deal.

3. Nobel Prize in Physics 2022 awarded to 3 Scientists for Work Exploring Quantum Weirdness

• The Nobel Prize in Physics 2022 was awarded to – Alain Aspect (France) – John F. Clauser (USA) – Anton Zeilinger (Australia) – for experiments with entangled photons, establishing the violation of Bell inequalities and pioneering quantum information science.
• Their results have cleared the way for new technology based upon quantum information.

4. India’s Rupay debit card to be launched in Oman, a historic MoU signed between two countries

• National Payments Corporation of India and Central Bank Of Oman signed a historic MoU to launch the Rupay debit card in Oman, paving the way for a new era of financial connectivity.
• UAE was the first country in the gulf where RuPay was launched during PM Modi’s August 2019 visit.
• RuPay was launched in Singapore in May 2018, followed by Bhutan and the Maldives.

6. Rohit Sharma becomes first Indian to complete 400 T20 appearances during 2nd India-South Africa T20I

• Rohit Sharma became the first Indian cricketer to complete 400 appearances in the Twenty20 format during the second T20I against South Africa in Guwahati.
• Ex-West Indies white-ball captain Kieron Pollard (614) holds the record for most appearances in the format and is currently the only cricketer with over 600 T20 appearances.

7. India signs deal with Armenia for export of missiles, weapon systems

• In a significant move to boost India’s defence export, the country has signed an export order for missiles, rockets, and ammunition to Armenia because of its conflict with Azerbaijan.
• In a first, India will also export indigenous Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launchers.
• Armenia is also set to get anti-tank rockets as well as a range of ammunition from India under the deal.

8. ESA astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti becomes first female European ISS commander

• Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti has officially become the first European woman to command the International Space Station (ISS).
• Cristoforetti, 45, took over from Oleg Artemyev, becoming the fifth European commander of the ISS after Frank De Winne, Alexander Gerst, Luca Parmitano and Thomas Pesquet.

9. GatiShakti’s network planning group recommends three road connectivity projects

• Network Planning Group constituted under PM GatiShakti National Master Plan has examined and recommended the following projects: construction of a 4-lane highway from Gazipur – Ballia – Uttar Pradesh/Bihar state border, improvement and up-gradation of existing road from two-lane to four-lane in Uttar Pradesh and Moradabad & Kashipur bypasses in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand.

• The newly reconstituted Committee elected the top team with Rakesh Mehra as Deputy Chairman, CITI and Ashwin Chandran as Vice Chairman of CITI.

12. SBI launches ‘Gram Seva Program’ across six states of India

• On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, the State Bank of India announced that it will adopt 30 remote villages across India under the 4th phase of the ‘SBI Gram Seva’ program.
• Under the flagship scheme of the SBI Foundation, the bank will adopt remote villages across Aspirational Districts in Haryana, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal.

13. India’s Mars orbiter craft, Mangalyaan, completes eight years in orbit

• India’s Mars orbiter craft has completed eight years in its orbit, well beyond its designed mission life of six months.
• The Mars Orbiter Mission, a technology demonstration venture, is the maiden interplanetary mission of the national space agency, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
