• The world celebrates this day to mark the importance of teachers.
• October 5 was proclaimed as World Teachers’ Day by UNESCO in 1994, with the aim of honouring the adoption of UNESCO/ILO Recommendation.

  • This year marks the 28th anniversary of World Teachers’ Day and the theme is “The Transformation of Education Begins with Teachers”.

2. World Space Week, from 4 october to10 October

• World Space Week is an international celebration of science and technology, and their contribution to the betterment of the human condition.
• The United Nations General Assembly declared in 1999 that World Space Week will be held each year from October 4-10.
• The World Space Week 2022 theme is “Space and Sustainability”

3. Svante Pääbo wins Nobel Prize 2022 in Medicine for his discoveries on human evolution

• Swedish scientist Svante Pääbo has been awarded the 2022 Nobel Prize for Physiology “for his discoveries concerning the genomes of extinct hominins and human evolution.”
• The prizes carry a cash award of 10 mn. Swedish kronor.
• Last year’s recipients were David Julius and Ardem Patapoutian for their discoveries into how the human body perceives temperature and touch.

4. EXIM Bank extends $100- mn LoC to Maldives for development projects

• Exim Bank India has extended a line of credit of USD 100 million to the Maldives for financing developmental projects.
• With the signing of this LOC agreement, Exim Bank has now 311 lines of credit covering 67 countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America Oceania, and the CIS, with credit commitments of around USD 32.31 billion.

• Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) is hosting a 15 day SFURTI Mela at Dilli Haat, INA in New Delhi from October 1, 2022.
• Under SFURTI, traditional artisans are organized into clusters for manufacturing value-added traditional products to enhance their income.
• These clusters cover traditional sectors such handloom, handicrafts, khadi, coir, agro-products, etc.

7. DGT launches Bharatskills Forum for easy access to skill-related content for ITI trainees and trainers

• The Directorate General of Training (DGT) has launched Bharatskills Forum, a new feature allows sharing of books, notes, videos, question bank, etc. for skill learners.
• This facility shall act as a digital warehouse for the skilling community by allowing sharing of contents in various forms like handwritten trainers’ or trainees’ notes, PDFs, scanned copies, etc.

8. UNESCO launches list documenting 50 iconic Indian heritage textiles

• Handmade for the 21st Century: Safeguarding Traditional Indian Textile lists the histories and legends behind the textiles, describes the complicated and secret processes behind their making, mentions the causes for their dwindling popularity, and provides strategies for their preservation.

9. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu top two destinations for foreign tourists in 2021: Union ministry report

• The Union Tourism Ministry released a report, which revealed that Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu registered the most number of foreign tourist visits with 1.26 million and 1.23 million respectively in 2021.
• The report also stated the number of foreign tourist arrivals during 2021 decreased to 1.52 million, nearly 44 per cent decline, compared to 2020, citing Covid-19.

11. Rohan Bopanna & Matwe Middelkoop clinch Men’s Doubles title at ATP 250 Tel Aviv Watergen Open, Tennis

• In tennis, India’s Rohan Bopanna and his Dutch partner Matwe Middelkoop clinched the ATP 250 Tel Aviv Watergen Open men’s doubles title.
• They notched up a 6-2, 6-4 victory over the third seeded Mexican-Argentine pair of Santiago Gonzalez and Andres Molteni in the final.
• It was Bopanna’s third Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) title of the season and 22nd overall.
• Novak Djokovic lifted the Tel Aviv Watergen Open men’s singles title beating Marin Cilic.

13. Govt issues draft guidelines for listing of regional rural banks (RRBs); minimum net worth of Rs 300 cr required

• The RRBs should have a track record of profitability and earned operating profit of minimum Rs 15 crore for at least three out of the previous five years, according to the draft guidelines issued by the finance ministry recently.
• Besides, there should not be any accumulated loss and the lender should have given return on equity of minimum 10% in 3 out of the preceding 5 yrs.

14. RBI expects inflation to drop to 5.8% in January-March 2023, further down 5.2% in FY24

• The retail inflation to come under control at 5.2% down from 6.7% which RBI has forecast for the current year, RBI said in its ‘Monetary Policy Report September 2022’.
• The central bank is mandated to keep retail inflation in a range of 2-6%.

• The launch of Fit India Freedom Run 3.0 took place at the Major Dhyanchand National Stadium in New Delhi this morning on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti.
• The third edition was jointly launched with a Fit India Plog Run by Law and Justice Minister Kiren Rijiju and Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur.

• Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu and olympic fencer Bhavani Devi won the gold medal at the 36th National Games.
• While Chanu walked away with the title after lifting 84 kg in snatch and 107 kgs in clean and jerk, Devi won the women’s sabre competition, earning her the third consecutive gold medal.
• She also won gold medals in the 2011 and 2015 editions.

17. Aldrin beats Sreeshankar for long jump gold; Amlan and Jyothi emerge fastest man and woman of National Games

• Long jumper Jeswin Aldrin qualified for the 2023 World Championship with a 8.26m (8.25m qualification mark)leap in his final attempt at the National Game.
• Amlan Borgohain of Assam & Jyothi Yarraji of Andhra Pradesh emerged as the fastest man and woman in 100m dash events.
• Rosy Meena Paulraj cleared 4.20m to go past VS Surekha’s earlier national mark of 4.15m set in 2014.
• Jyothi won with a time of 11.51 seconds and Amlan clocked 10.38s in the final.
